There's going to be a thread anyway no matter the results, so I might as well start one up.

Lowest voter turnout rate in Israeli history (63%).

This is a fairly boring election, particularly by Israeli standards.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 18:23 (twenty years ago)

Weird. I would have thought it would be higher given everything over the past few months.

Forgone conclusions = boring elections

Also, Olmert wasn't supposed to be in this position. He's not a polarizing figure (who creates controversy and draws people to the polls) like Sharon was.

The biggest surprise here in Israel is that the new "senior party"
won more or less 5% of the cabinet, which is a lot:
some say it's a protest vote against the big party's corruption, some say it's a Tel aviv's voters trendy gimmick.
Anyway,Olmert's party won less votes than expected, which means it will be harder for him, as a prime minister, to fulfil the task of withdrawling from the west bank - that agenda was a major isuue for Olmert in the campaign.

i'm pretty happy that likud is finished. it's the no. 5 party!

Sym Sym (sym), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 03:01 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but other far-right parties have taken its place! The far right did fairly well in this election.

Nobody on ILX gives a crap about Israeli politics unless people are getting shot or blown up -- quel surprise. Maybe this thread needs a snappier title, how about "Israeli Religious Fundamentalist Party 'Shas' Remains the #3 Party in the Country -- Doesn't This Prove That Israel the Most Fucked Up Country In the History of the Whole World Ever, or What?" I guarantee 250 New Answers by lunchtime tomorrow.

Feeling a bit precious this morning, this is why I avoid Israel threads now

anyway, much more worrying is the rise of the Yisrael Beitenu who stood on a platform of ethnic cleansing.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 05:17 (twenty years ago)

how did the palestinian parties do? anything unexpected there?

W i l l (common_person), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 05:27 (twenty years ago)

I give a crap, yet I have somehow managed to avoid these elections entirely. I suppose it was because I was on holiday and therefore entirely disconnected from everything, including the FA Cup.

I give a crap because I read that Elusive Peace book. I still have the telly programmes to watch. I am saving them up.

"Israeli Religious Fundamentalist Party 'Shas' Remains the #3 Party in the Country -- Doesn't This Prove That Israel the Most Fucked Up Country In the History of the Whole World Ever, or What?"

bring it on.

so does everyone hate Netanhyahu know (if they ever did not)?

"Israeli Religious Fundamentalist Party 'Shas' "

ok, but please dont compare them to the fundementalists of the arab party's - Shas is not about terror, and extremes, only about money...so they don't harm no one except israeli citizen's pockets..and politicly, they will go with anyone who will give them the goods, and agree with almost everything Olmert will do, just bring them the money.
