"hi there! you've won a holiday to Disneyland!"

I hate those automated voice spam phone calls!

My worry is that cheap to zero-cost internet telephony plus autodialler technology hosted in laxly regulated countries will lead to the whole model of "ring ring" synchronous communication devices breaking down entirely.

If one call in three is a voice saying: "Hello! we have a great deal for you on university diplomas, press the hash key now for a chance to win a free iPod with your order" then everyone's going to end up screening all their calls.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 15:49 (twenty years ago)

the automated calls are the WORST WORST WORST.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 15:50 (twenty years ago)

no of course i have been telemarketed at before, but the subject of this one was so classicaly spammy.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 15:50 (twenty years ago)

wtf, are the penis enlargers next?

why am I imagining them all in matching costumes?

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 15:51 (twenty years ago)

the automated calls are the WORST WORST WORST.

If it takes a minute or so for someone to talk, I hang up. Even if there is an actual person on the other line, and I can hear them talking to people in the background.

"Hi! Don't hang up! What I have to say will only take a minute!"

elmo, holy helper (allocryptic), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 17:01 (twenty years ago)

we get this the whole time on our landline.

which is why i never answer the landline

i never answer my mobile either, but thats a whole other story

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 17:03 (twenty years ago)

My dad used an off-shore sports book for a while, and we would get automated calls promoting betting for upcoming games. So tacky.

elmo, holy helper (allocryptic), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 17:04 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone ever get telemarketers phoning their mobile? I mean, can they do that yet?

YIKES

Has anyone else gotten calls on their cell from a Florida #, and when you answer a recording starts up in Spanish? I've gotten 4 or 5 of those.

phil d. (Phil D.), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 17:41 (twenty years ago)

Who speaks Spanish in Florida?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 17:43 (twenty years ago)

I KNOW RIGHT!!!!!

phil d. (Phil D.), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 17:48 (twenty years ago)

I got one of these the other day. Didn't recognize the (FL) # so I didn't pick up, but there was a Spanish recording on my voice mail. (Erm, a recording of a recording.) Too mumbly and buzzy to decipher, though.
