haha ok i just read this bit: the fram's drift across the arctic frozen into the ice -- which was meant to take them to the north pole but didn't because the drift didn't go in that direction -- was SO BORING (they were stuck in the ice for THREE YEARS) that the ship's doctor deliberately got himself hooked on morphine JUST TO SEE IF HE COULD KICK IT
