Quicktime Pro is the most convenient way. Not free ($30?), although I've never known anyone pay for it, if you know what I mean. Failing that, I imagine ffmpegX can do it.

do you need to convert? if you download VLC and make it the default for .avi playback you can watch virtually anything on it. i prefer it to quicktime anyway.

i prefer it because it "feels" more like DVD playback - no frame to the image etc.

Bear in mind that avi isn't an equivalent "format" to mpeg. It is just a shell in which all manner of compression data formats can sit, including mpeg in its various flavours.

so why is is not integrated into quicktime by now? i mean they update quicktime about once a week now.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 30 March 2006 15:57 (twenty years ago)

It is integrated into Quicktime, but it's disabled unless you regsiter it and pay the $30 for Quicktime Pro (or crack it).

It's completely idiotic. For what is virtually a rounding error in the cost of a new Mac, they create ill-will and a bad impression on people who've just spent an awful lot of money. Grr.

you can play some avi's in quicktime - just depends on which codec was used

jed is right - get vlc

mike is also right - ffmpegX will convert them if that's what you want

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Thursday, 30 March 2006 16:09 (twenty years ago)

yeah ffmpegx is what you want

how do i make vlc default?

Real Goths Don't Wear Black (Enrique), Monday, 3 April 2006 09:35 (twenty years ago)

click on the avi file icon just once so that it's highlighted but not open. then do apple+i which will bring up the info box

open with "vlc player"
then click "change all" just underneath.

thanks! (that was such a basic question it's embarrassing)

milo z (mlp), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

i've got titanium!!

can it all be so simple?

hey broheem, this is no porn, this is 'weeds'.

benrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 19:37 (nineteen years ago)

yeah you can do it on toast - it works fine and is easy but it takes ages to do (3 hours + to process the file plus burning time) so i would recommend doing it before you go out for the day or go to sleep.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 19:40 (nineteen years ago)

piracy is some hard work.

also wtf is it with macs and dvd-rws!!!?! this time i deliberately didn't get the wrong type of dvd, but ended up with the wrong type anyway.

they should teach people about computers at school, instead of bullshit history etc.

benrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

i would recommend getting a divx-capable dvd player and just burning data discs... CHANGED MY LIFE>

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

presumably i could plug my laptop into the television... or just go legit. more4 have just started with _commander in chief_ (shown on abc1 in july ffs) and it's no s60 till next year. THEIR FAULT NOT MINE.

benrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)
