It's awful. I worked with someone a few years back who took a massive dislike to me (for no reason I could fathom), and her hatred of me affected me very negatively and made me feel physically unwell. Luckily she resigned from her job and left the company after a few months so I didn't have to deal with it for long, but it was really upsetting while it lasted.

I find it a bit perplexing. But then again, when you think about it, maybe it's slightly flattering. Especially when it's someone who's hated you for a long time, it's a sense of "wow, I can't believe you still care..."

In other senses of being hated, (more aesthetic hatred, when someone hates your writing or your work) it's kind of a relief, to be hated by someone whose beliefs and tastes are so different to yours, that when someone reacts with hatred... it's almost like... I wouldn't *want* to be liked by you.

I don't like being hated. I'm usually trying to make sure I am liked by absolutely everyone. Not a 100% success rate of course. But if anyone hates me now it'll be (assuming here) purely because of petty ILX arguing/disagreements/conflict, so that seems like pretty good going on the whole.

lousy is how it feels

At my last office-job, I became a symbolic hate figure for a couple of new middle-managers who were brought in to "improve" the magazine. So I stood for everything wrong with the way things had been run, building up to the inevitable ritual sacrifice. That actually came as a relief, after three months of fielding these constant looks of utter comptempt from my boss and his sidekick. They'd just stare with this cold blank intensity, waiting for me to do something "arrogant" to justify their generalized hate. I didn't let them down. But I still wonder at times, "what on earth did I do to deserve this?" Since I'm Catholic, I twist it into guilt.

Being hated by an ex-lover is slightly easier to take, if only because I know what I did to deserve it.
