Women say 'casual sex is immoral'

Well actually, 4.6 women out of a study of 46 'thought "no strings" sex was acceptable'.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4863770.stm
Is 46 a big number for a study of this nature?

Ned T.RIfle II (Ned T.Rifle II), Friday, 31 March 2006 08:53 (twenty years ago)

How did they arrive at 4.6 women?? Shurely shome mishtake?

steal compass, drive north, disappear (tissp), Friday, 31 March 2006 08:56 (twenty years ago)

It depends on how you get your sample.

Ask 46 women knocking around Bigg Market on a friday night, your ratio may be different.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 31 March 2006 08:56 (twenty years ago)

I have never slept with .6 of a woman

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Friday, 31 March 2006 08:57 (twenty years ago)

Dr Owens added: "However, if you go out wondering what might happen, ready to give as well as receive, you might have the most wonderful adventure."

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 31 March 2006 08:58 (twenty years ago)

That's Dr Tuppy Owens. Is that a mans name or a womans, Tuppy?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 31 March 2006 08:59 (twenty years ago)

The 4.6 was weak joke on my part - they say 10%...I guess someone couldn't make up their mind.

Also the sample is from 23 to 83 which is going throw your figures as well isn't it?

I can't really see how they can come to (m)any conclusions from this but I'm not a statisician or a psychologist.

Ned T.RIfle II (Ned T.Rifle II), Friday, 31 March 2006 09:02 (twenty years ago)

Nor can I spell statistician...

Ned T.RIfle II (Ned T.Rifle II), Friday, 31 March 2006 09:03 (twenty years ago)

Tuppy must be a woman's name. No man would go by"Tuppy"

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Friday, 31 March 2006 09:06 (twenty years ago)

it's a ram's name actually.

estela (estela), Friday, 31 March 2006 09:07 (twenty years ago)

Definitely a woman...

that still leaves 10 % of women

observational research:

some of these ads are probably wind-ups / not genuine but there are some woman who are looking for no strings casual fun if you can match their particular requirements e.g good looking, over 6ft, have a big willy, in a certain age bracket, location etc

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 31 March 2006 09:12 (twenty years ago)

But Gumtree is full of Aussies and Kiwis!

Coffee, Pizza and Boris Johnson Playing In My Smoke Free Living Room, Pls (kate), Friday, 31 March 2006 09:13 (twenty years ago)

I like it when DJ Martian says "a big willy".

Alba (Alba), Friday, 31 March 2006 09:13 (twenty years ago)

x-post, oops, not that I'm saying Kiwis/Aussies are easy, but if someone is in the country for a shorter term, chances are they would be looking for a less permanent relationship.

Coffee, Pizza and Boris Johnson Playing In My Smoke Free Living Room, Pls (kate), Friday, 31 March 2006 09:14 (twenty years ago)

46 women aged 23 to 83. Rubbish! I can't believe anyone could hold that up as a meaningful scientific study.

Cathy (Cathy), Friday, 31 March 2006 09:36 (twenty years ago)

No, it's true - honest!

Ned T.RIfle II (Ned T.Rifle II), Friday, 31 March 2006 09:53 (twenty years ago)

I just have this image of a man in a labcoat popping out with a Crazy World Of Arthur Brown style flaming hat on his head, singing "I bring you SCIENCE!!!"::da-daaa big organ riff::

Men say NO to casual sex! We like it formal.

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Friday, 31 March 2006 10:03 (twenty years ago)

also: them scientists obv never watched cruel intentions! everybody thinks sleeping around is ok, just that nobody talks about it. it's like a secret society.

With pervy versions of handshakes.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 31 March 2006 10:08 (twenty years ago)

Nine out of 10 women interviewed in-depth about their views said they thought one night stands were immoral

That's not what nine out of 10 women said last night!

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Friday, 31 March 2006 13:31 (twenty years ago)

Also, I do think that this is the classic thing that women do where they police each other.

"Other women having casual sex is immoral. Whereas when I had it last 'it just sort of happened' and therefore don't judge me." :)

Treblekicker (treblekicker), Friday, 31 March 2006 13:43 (twenty years ago)

Oh god, yes, those horrific women police are always on my back.

(wtf?)

STOP! Time Thief! (kate), Friday, 31 March 2006 13:43 (twenty years ago)

Women normally judge other women who have casual sex negatively. Men don't judge other men who have casual sex negatively. That's all I mean.

Treblekicker (treblekicker), Friday, 31 March 2006 13:45 (twenty years ago)

sometimes i think women just say the opposite of what men want JUST TO ANNOY THEM

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 31 March 2006 13:46 (twenty years ago)

That's called either hypocrisy, or the Double Standard. Nothing to do with "self policing" or whatever.

OH GOD, I WORE THE WRONG HEELS TODAY, WOMAN POLICE ARE GONNA ARREST ME!

STOP! Time Thief! (kate), Friday, 31 March 2006 13:46 (twenty years ago)

Men don't judge other men who have casual sex negatively.

Except when they're jealous!

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 31 March 2006 13:47 (twenty years ago)

OH GOD, I WORE THE WRONG HEELS TODAY, WOMAN POLICE ARE GONNA ARREST ME!

you mean women don't judge other women on what they wear? guys do this always

ken c (ken c), Friday, 31 March 2006 13:49 (twenty years ago)

rly?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 31 March 2006 13:52 (twenty years ago)

what kind of pants are you wearing stevem?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 31 March 2006 13:53 (twenty years ago)

Everyone's taking the whole "just because a bunch of people label something as 'immoral' doesn't mean a subset of that same group of people don't do/haven't done it" line of thought as read, I assume?

Dan (Just Saying) Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 31 March 2006 13:53 (twenty years ago)

I'm only basing things on the 4.6 women I've had sex with though.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Friday, 31 March 2006 14:04 (twenty years ago)

just leave the 2.4 children alone k?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 31 March 2006 14:06 (twenty years ago)

Yeah Dan I figured many of the people polled were engaging in immoral acts like every day. :)

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 31 March 2006 14:07 (twenty years ago)

I wonder what "interviewed in depth" actually means. Mabe they just gave them a questionnaire that said: one night stands are a) immoral b) fine by me c) totally cool

There is a big difference between thinking something is 'immoral' and a bad idea/nasty. I'm not convinced that this survey separated the two.

This whole thing is just idiotic.

Laura H. (laurah), Friday, 31 March 2006 19:54 (twenty years ago)

How did they arrive at 4.6 women?? Shurely shome mishtake?

After he slept with 46 women, word got around and he had trouble scoring more chicks. But, before he gave up, he reaized that one woman he had completely wrote off was having mixed feelings and kept calling his cell phone. She's the .6. She's would like a relationship, but she keeps calling just to get fucked.

The Aeon, Friday, 31 March 2006 19:57 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure they also think drinking and lying are "immoral." That word is completely useless, why not ask about "social acceptable" or more accurately, "highly probable."

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Friday, 31 March 2006 20:01 (twenty years ago)

I'm kind of presuming it's a bad translation...

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Friday, 31 March 2006 20:07 (twenty years ago)

Kate's right, if the sample group was Aussies and Kiwis, there must have been some kind of mistake. Maybe they only interviewed people from the 'Mc' part of the phone directory or something.

ratty, Friday, 31 March 2006 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Of course, there are plenty of folks(like the GoodMorals ones) who view any sex not for the express purpose of procreation is sin. This is pretty much the view that drives the anti-contraception and much of the anti-abortion movements over here in America.

kingfish ubermensch dishwasher sundae (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 31 March 2006 20:38 (twenty years ago)

they should do a surveey of how many of those who think its immoral still do it. or, do a survey of how many hetero men are having casual sex (since women are likely to not totally fess up) and use taht, cos theyre obviously not having one night stands on their own.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Saturday, 1 April 2006 10:52 (twenty years ago)

Yes, but there is always clearly just one Town Bike who is responsible for every man's one night stand, errr... ever. Cause clearly moral, upstanding, good girls don't.

STOP! Time Thief! (kate), Saturday, 1 April 2006 10:56 (twenty years ago)

riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Saturday, 1 April 2006 11:13 (twenty years ago)

This goes back to Babylonian times, when there were priestess/whores specifically for this purpose. Though I remember reading something about all women at one time or another having to serve in this way... or was that actually Carry On, Nebachadnezzar or something?

STOP! Time Thief! (kate), Saturday, 1 April 2006 11:21 (twenty years ago)

Carry On Village Whore?

really though, even the 'nicest' and most 'proper' and 'upstanding' girls probably engage in casual, or should i say, 'immoral sex' themselves. in fact, i think its easier and therefore probably more common for the 'nice girls' to be having a bit of casual sex here and there than for 'nice guys' as women are just propositioned more so its easier for them to get it.

its like that docu there was on bb1 a few months back when the women were really quite upset at having to divulge how many partners they REALLY had, as they didnt - understandably - want to look like cheap whores. but straight men arent having casual sex all over the place on their own. and the village/town whore can only shag SO many...

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Saturday, 1 April 2006 11:26 (twenty years ago)

mene mene tekel oo-er missus

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 1 April 2006 11:28 (twenty years ago)

perhaps all 46 girls surveyed were all church women or total prudes but for instance, my ex was one of the sweetest, nicest, most morally upstanding, do-right, by the book, etc etc etc girls ive known, and while it took some time for her to confess (after we broke up), she admitted she had had the occasional bit of casual sex herself.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Saturday, 1 April 2006 11:32 (twenty years ago)

If it's hard enough to admit that kind of thing to your partner, how on earth are you going to admit it to a bloody BBC survey? The whole thing is ridiculous.

STOP! Time Thief! (kate), Saturday, 1 April 2006 11:46 (twenty years ago)

it might have been an anonymous survey. its still only 46 women though, which is pretty meagre.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Saturday, 1 April 2006 11:49 (twenty years ago)

Methodology: man asks 46 women if they should have sex with him.

What kind of insane world do we live in where men attempt to convince women that casual sex is immoral, indecent, or otherwise a bad thing?

I have had sex with every woman in the above photo precisely once and never intend to see any of them ever again. They seem happy enough.
