All Things Considered, April 3, 2006 · Chevrolet has run into problems with its innovative Internet ad campaign for the Chevy Tahoe, which gives site visitors wide latitude in creating their own Tahoe ads. But the campaign, tied in with a contest for The Apprentice TV show, has created a somewhat of a backlash.http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5320442

Chevy pwned by future Chevy pwners?

I don't necessarily believe the maxim that all publicity is good publicity -- for example I don't think having Wendy's name all over the news for a human finger found in chili is ultimately helping Wendy's by "getting more people talking about it." And likewise I doubt anyone making an anti-SUV commercial is going to become any more likely to buy an SUV by watching a few dozen of these spots.
The one way I could see this benefitting Chevy though is that the press drummed up could reach people who ARE potential SUV buyers. Some of these people are even the kind of assholes who would say "Yeah, FUCK the environment!" But I guess those people are unreachable anyway.
Ultimately I think the negative SUV ads hurt Chevy more than they help or possibly just don't make a difference at all.

Apparently the way to save Chevy is to not call it Chevy anymore
Bye-bye, indeed, Miss American Pie. If General Motors has its way, you won’t be driving your Chevy to the levee ever again. On Tuesday, G.M. sent a memo to Chevrolet employees at its Detroit headquarters, promoting the importance of “consistency” for the brand, which was the nation’s best-selling line of cars and trucks for more than half a century after World War II.And one way to present a consistent brand message, the memo suggested, is to stop saying “Chevy,” though the word is one of the world’s best-known, longest-lived product nicknames.“We’d ask that whether you’re talking to a dealer, reviewing dealer advertising, or speaking with friends and family, that you communicate our brand as Chevrolet moving forward,” said the memo, which was signed by Alan Batey, vice president for Chevrolet sales and service, and Jim Campbell, the G.M. division’s vice president for marketing.

Oh wow, these people are such dipshits. An Impala was in the running the last time I bought a car and never did once call it anything other than a Chevy.

Chev'
Btw:
And what about rolling back the popular culture references to Chevy? Elton John, Bob Seger, Mötley Crüe and the Beastie Boys have all sung about Chevy, and hip-hop artists rap about “Chevy Ridin’ High” or “Ridin’ in My Chevy.”
Just some "hip-hop artists" - negroes from the "rapping trend" whose names the readership of the New York Times need not bother themselves with remembering. : /
