Kim (Kim), Sunday, 2 April 2006 18:00 (twenty years ago)

whoa. not good.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Sunday, 2 April 2006 18:02 (twenty years ago)

Holy shit, that's my regular spot when I'm at the reference library for a sugar fix. I bought a cruller there a few weeks ago.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Sunday, 2 April 2006 18:19 (twenty years ago)

Hasn't been reported to be a bomb or anything, yet.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Sunday, 2 April 2006 18:20 (twenty years ago)

the hell?

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 2 April 2006 18:26 (twenty years ago)

What Rob said.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Sunday, 2 April 2006 18:27 (twenty years ago)

Globe finally reports in

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 2 April 2006 18:28 (twenty years ago)

Christ almighty. The first thing I thought when I read that was "I feel bad for the staff". (I've worked in too many coffee shops.) Still, holy crap.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Sunday, 2 April 2006 18:31 (twenty years ago)

640 goes US reporting style by saying the guy had himself strapped up with a bomb. Completely unconfirmed by everyone else.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 2 April 2006 18:32 (twenty years ago)

probably is just some kind of freak accident.

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 2 April 2006 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Holy sht!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 2 April 2006 18:51 (twenty years ago)

From the T.S.: Eek!

At about 3 p.m., another Tim Hortons location near Yonge St. and Lawrence Ave. was evacuated by emergency personnel after employees there discovered what they believed to be a suspicious package and reported the finding to police.

Investigators cordoned off the area near the store, located at 3222 Yonge St., and the police bomb squad has since been called in to investigate the package.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Sunday, 2 April 2006 20:31 (twenty years ago)

People be paranoid - if you heard rumours of a bomb at a branch of your company, you'll be suspicious of any discarded coffee-cup or unattended handbag as well. Doesn't mean anything, more than likely.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 2 April 2006 21:11 (twenty years ago)

Would it be inappropriate to make a fruit-explosion muffin joke at this point?

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 2 April 2006 21:18 (twenty years ago)

Why yes. Yes it would.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 2 April 2006 21:22 (twenty years ago)

Not if you ever ate one.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 2 April 2006 21:27 (twenty years ago)

I was wondering if he'd rolled up one too many "please play again"s.

Bryan (Bryan), Sunday, 2 April 2006 21:30 (twenty years ago)

Nice lede!

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Sunday, 2 April 2006 21:31 (twenty years ago)

WTF I meant to say "why no it wouldnt"

Never ever let me post first thing in the morning!

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 2 April 2006 22:53 (twenty years ago)

The hell is someone doing blowing up in the toilets of a coffeeshop, anyway? I'm trying to work out what kind of point its meant to make...

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 2 April 2006 22:54 (twenty years ago)

Oh wait I know! It was Johnny the Homicidal Maniac!

(sorry)

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 2 April 2006 22:54 (twenty years ago)

take that, armitage shanks

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Sunday, 2 April 2006 22:59 (twenty years ago)

you can fuck with our government, our loved ones, our land. but when you fuck with our Tim's.... that is a REAL Canadian problem... amiright?

scout (scout), Sunday, 2 April 2006 23:02 (twenty years ago)

Police ruled out initial reports that a man had entered the washroom shortly before the blast with explosives strapped to his body

Logically, if you were going to blow yourself up, would you stop to take a piss first?

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Sunday, 2 April 2006 23:28 (twenty years ago)

Later Sunday, another of the coffee franchise's Toronto outlets was locked down after a suspicious package was found. Police confirmed an emergency task force unit was dispatched to the second location — just a few subway stations north of the first — and the area was evacuated.

The suspicious package turned out to be a clock in a shopping bag, Staff-Sgt. Cole said.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Sunday, 2 April 2006 23:31 (twenty years ago)

Maybe the dude dropped a lit match down the bog?

I mean are they saying in what way he um, exploded at this stage? You canadians have to do everything surreal, doncha!

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 3 April 2006 00:08 (twenty years ago)

this reminds me of a mythbusters episode

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Monday, 3 April 2006 00:09 (twenty years ago)

This thread scared the shit out of me when I first saw it. I've emailed her just to check she's OK (though obviously she should be). Christ, you're not safe anywhere now...always some disenfranchised nutbag out to wreck other people's lives...anyway I'm HOPING she's safe and OK.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 3 April 2006 07:03 (twenty years ago)

Toronto is a very safe city compared to London, Marcello! And I lived in one of the dodgier parts of town.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Monday, 3 April 2006 07:31 (twenty years ago)

Oh it hasn't put me off going there, it's just a bit of a shock reading the news first thing in the morning and knowing that your loved one lives there. When I finally got through to my mum on the morning of 7/7 she was practically hysterical - but who could blame her? (and again that proves that London is an infinitely more dangerous city)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 3 April 2006 07:39 (twenty years ago)

"He's not a strap-on Al Qaeda bomber guy," Cole said.

marcus (d90), Monday, 3 April 2006 09:58 (twenty years ago)

"They'd have to be stupid bombers if they were aiming for the subway and hit a Tim Hortons"

My councilor/TTC chairman Howard Moscoe waves off rumors of a TTC terrorist attack yesterday.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Monday, 3 April 2006 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Dude brought a can of gasoline in and pulled a Thich Quang Duc.
