UK Subway Posters

I remember in the late 80's and early 90's, any record shop worth its 45 adapters sold those huge UK subway posters, of which i have quite a few. what happened to that? a quick look at ebay shows that those posters are still being produced (i saw Golfrapp and recent Spiritualized ones) but i NEVER see them anymore. anyone know the deal? i've got a kick-ass huge Pills'n'Thrills & Bellyaches one that i'm considering getting mounted, but i'm after some old ones as well. know where i can get them?

No idea where you can buy them but they are not very practicle anyway. I've got a B-52's one that's about 9 feet long which just looks ridiculous in an average room. It was on a ceiling for a while but now it's in it's second decade of being rolled up and stuck in a closet.

Don't you think it's about time the B-52's came out of the closet?

I used to sell these, they are only produced for record companies to advertise concerts and new releases. less and less are produced as councils have cracked down on fly posting and record companies turn to other means. They are not available for resale in the shops and rarely on the web. You can get some giant posters from www.posters.co.uk and classic concert repros from the states.

I, along with pretty much every student in the UK, used to rip them off walls. I once took down a poster for the Pogues' Fairytale of New York and carried it around Edinburgh for a whole night then took it on a bus back to Glasgow. It had the remnants of about ten other posters underneath it, I'd be surprised if I hadn't taken some of the plaster off the wall as well.

in my day (before ailsa's day almost certainly) there used to be poster sales in the student's union every monday selling them, especially at the starts of terms. outside of gigs is the other place i've seen them.

was advert in the paper at the weekend for 7ft x 4ft posters, probably movie posters rather than bands. £103 each so obviously aimed at a different market (or with 1000% profit margin)

Ailsa is wrong to say that pretty much every student in the UK ripped such posters off walls. I never knew anyone that did. And crikey, I was a student for a long time.

Koogs is right to recall poster sales. The thing is, though - those posters would surely never have appeared on 'subways' (does this mean the London and Glasgow Underground systems?).

It means the Glasgow underground system, but presumably not the London one.

Koogs is under-estimating my age, I think. Student-union-poster-sales-a-go-go round Glasgow Uni in 1991-95 when I was a student, but likelihood of finding anything that was Nirvana/The Orb/Ned's Atomic Dustbin = not very high. Hence need to rip Pogues ones off walls.

Haha, yes, outside gigs too. However, when one is a student, one is (1) poor and (2) pre-disposed to drunken hi-jinks. Hence nicking them off walls rather than actually paying real cash money better spent on the complete works of Hegel beer.

I don't expect for a moment that the pinefox would associate with people that did such silly things. I think he only speaks to me know that I have the benefit of maturity and no longer do such things.
