I was required to have a passport for the very travel allen park is making! Perhaps it is cuz I am a US citizen? I asked the US passport regulatory recently and was told everyone (even babes) needs a passport for travel across nat'l borders - even country to country in Europe. Again, perhaps its a US thing we're oh so "homeland BAH security" minded.
And to Aimless, yes!!! everyone should have one, period. It's a way of life now and clearly by just what I have read here and experienced in recent travels, the rules while clearcut on paper, vary widely border to border crossing and are contingent upon who is the border guard and how enthused they are that particular day about their job I spose.

The type of photo ID required varies by airline. Often it's only a passport or a driving licence.

I mean, I know that England and Scotland are in the same country, but they're not really like states either, right?
― Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Saturday, 29 April 2006 21:53 (twenty years ago)
Yes, there are "Welcome to Scotland" signs on the motorway. Safety belts should be fastened at all times.
― Alba (Alba), Saturday, 29 April 2006 22:19 (twenty years ago)
If it was the latter, that'd be pretty trivial as Vancouver, Washington has become a pretty sizeable suburb of Portland, Oregon by now.
― DOQQUN (donut), Sunday, 30 April 2006 06:35 (twenty years ago)
A pedant writes: there aren't any motorways that cross the England/Scotland border.
(according to Google Maps, the A74(M) starts just north of the border, so whether there are any "Welcome to Scotland" signs on it would need a field trip to check)

that makes me sad. living in upstate ny, we used to go to canada a lot and you barely had to wave out the window at the customs guys. (ok, a friend of mine got his car seized at the border, but that's because he hid the drugs INSIDE THE STUFFED BEAVER ON THE DASHBOARD, which is just like red flag to a bull to a customs inspector.)

Wiggy, are you sure you weren't using the passport as ID for the airline rather than as an actual passport for flying between Scotland and England?
― ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 30 April 2006 07:55 (twenty years ago)
This wouldn't normally be a problem because I do have a passport, but unfortunately it's currently in the hands of Immigration, cos my wife's applying for her Indefinite Leave to Remain visa.
Is this likely to be a problem, any idea?

― Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 10 April 2025 19:38 (one year ago)

― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 10 April 2025 19:48 (one year ago)

― sleeve, Thursday, 10 April 2025 19:49 (one year ago)
If you've renewed your passport and/or driver's license and/or ID in the last decade, you're good.

― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 10 April 2025 19:57 (one year ago)
most states have kept extending the deadline year after year after year.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 10 April 2025 19:58 (one year ago)
Okay, but you can keep getting Real ID's in the future... this is just the deadline for requiring one for air travel, gov't buildings etc?
― Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 10 April 2025 20:02 (one year ago)
yes aiui
― sleeve, Thursday, 10 April 2025 20:04 (one year ago)
Yes, after the deadline a non-RealID driving license will not be acceptable for air travel etc (without one you would need to use a passport).
You can get upgrade to a RealID license after the deadline.
― Kim Kimberly, Thursday, 10 April 2025 20:42 (one year ago)

Oh well I'll just ride my scooter around
