I was disturbed to see the other day that there were 'average speed cameras' on the M25. Couldn't they get some decent quality ones?

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 06:32 (nineteen years ago)

I always like the road signs with compass directions that are capitalised: "The SOUTH", "The NORTH", and so on.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 06:37 (nineteen years ago)

No trumpet signs in China are pretty fab.

Fetchboy (Felcher), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 07:03 (nineteen years ago)

What do they have against trumpets in China? Or is that a horn?

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 07:05 (nineteen years ago)

They just hate Miles Davis.

ALLAH FROG (Mingus Dew), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 07:09 (nineteen years ago)

No horny allowed, birth control law.

StanM (StanM), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 07:10 (nineteen years ago)

There seem to be loads of "Slow Down" signs in Ireland full of big melodramatic capitals, like "OMG FFS THINK OF THE CHILDREN AND SLOW DOWN YOU CRAZY FOOL"

More Tongue Feldman (noodle vague), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 07:24 (nineteen years ago)

the speed camera signs in germany are awesome, they look (predictably) like kraftwerk artwork

i like the "kill your speed not the workforce" one - like the reason for not killing people is because they're part of the workforce, not, you know, people

and not a road sign, but somewhere in thailand on a cliff in the middle of nowhere, there is a bin with a sign above saying "keep wales tidy"

emsk ( emsk), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 07:29 (nineteen years ago)

GET IN THE PEDESTRIAN PIT, OR BACK THE FUCK OFF!

San Diva Gyna (and a Masala DOsaNUT on the side) (donut), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 07:31 (nineteen years ago)

Roadside in France they have these signs that look like a simplified human silhouette with a blood splatter across the head. Presumably they're designed to scare the shit out of you in the dark.

More Tongue Feldman (noodle vague), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 07:32 (nineteen years ago)

I like 'Danger of Death' on the London Underground, with the image of a man lying down having been struck by a giant zigzag

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 07:38 (nineteen years ago)

ok a bit of a chestnut this, but it is probably still my favourite:

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 07:46 (nineteen years ago)

That is remarkable. Where on earth did you find it?

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 07:52 (nineteen years ago)

I Hate the 'skiddy road' one (your first one). I just don't understand how it makes those two skid-marks cross over!

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 07:56 (nineteen years ago)

Cos the car's done a 180 and you're looking at the front of it?

Annie Get Your Gin (noodle vague), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 07:57 (nineteen years ago)

That is remarkable. Where on earth did you find it?

Oh, on t'interwebs. I think it's somewhere in Africa or something.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 07:58 (nineteen years ago)

(xpost)
There would be 4 tyre marks! That would maybe over-complicate ths sign though.

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 07:59 (nineteen years ago)

"I just don't understand how it makes those two skid-marks cross over! "

That's why I love it so. It's like those cartoons where a skiier's tracks go either side of a tall tree.

I also love the way we're supposed to believe that speed limits are enforced by inter-war Brownie Box Cameras.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 08:02 (nineteen years ago)

There's a huge amount of spoof ones in a b3ta compematition here but my favourite one is this, not least because it's outside my work.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 11:49 (nineteen years ago)

I like the one on the M4 saying "Use Junction 11 for The Oracle".

Especially as it's not even true: Junction 10 is better...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 11:57 (nineteen years ago)

my favourite one is this, not least because it's outside my work

I got lost the last time I was in Bristol and went round that roundabout about three times.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 12:22 (nineteen years ago)

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

Or maybe an em dash.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 13:06 (nineteen years ago)

You can't really see this, but we have a Duck sign in our village at home. It brings back memories and makes me smile:

the duck sign is great and reminds me of this

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

A billboard along a state route in Ohio (and other places in the state as well, probably) says 'oplates' in very large obnoxious font-- so large, in fact, that it looks like an advert for 'opiates.'

My favourite was in France. It said "Toutes directions" pointing one way, and "Autres directions" pointing the other way. Thanks, that's very helpful.

Any signs for the elderly and animals are totally classic.
