Shoot a man just to watch him die, thus fulfilling one of your five cliche requirements.
Or you could do what you'd expect to do in Vegas, except on a smaller scale.

why are you going to reno? how are you getting there?
you could stay at the el cortez. it has great art deco features inside, and is somewhat incongruous with the rest of central reno. built in 1931, and barely modernized at all. this means...no air conditioning. be warned
or, if you fancy something a little more risque, you could stay in the reno riviera, next to the greyhound station, by the river. a just the right side of seedy 70s swingers motel, with darkened bar, and rooms that open out into a covered 'meeting area'
find somewhere good to eat that isnt a casino, though the all-you-can-eat buffets can be fun
dont go to http://boomtownreno.com its not a ghost town. why you would think it was, is beyond me anyhow
east reno looks a bit more fun, never made it to sparks though
once you get to the state line with california, the landscape totally changes and gets a lot more lush as you enter the sierra nevada. i-80 or the train is a nice journey down towards sacramento.

five months pass...
have you seem the bombs at hawthorne? They're pretty spectacular. I wouldn't necessarily make a special trip to see them, but if you're passing through town it's worth a photo stop.

There is really good Basque food in Reno, the biggest little city in the world.
The Carson City silver mines are pretty nice.
