Arctic Monkeys Want To Make Me Smoke Crack

I put a tenner on Hot Chip to win the Mercury Music Prize, so I could fund an expensive haircut. Now I'm tonsorially screwed but more to the point haven't we reached saturation point for parochial moanings - Jam, Pulp etc surely said all there is to be said on the subject? I do sincerely hope that with their next endeavours they fall from the critical and commercial rooftop in the most spectacular way. I shall have the last laugh then. Will you?

Being that everything is hyped these days in exactly the same manner - (ALL NEW DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES! THE SERIES YOU'VE BEEN WAITING FOR! THE SAVIOR OF TV! etc) I've become immune to hype. When that's ignored, AM turn into a reasonably pleasant boys-with-guitars band. They pop up on 6music occasionally, they sound okay, I don't care if they lurch into obscurity or not. However, I appreciate they've been all over the place recently, and if your job is to keep an eye on the media (eg. everyone working in the media) then I can see how they could get very tiring very quickly.

NP, is your aversion to them more to do with actually how they sound, or is it just that they're held up as the new great white hope of british music? A good record overhyped? Someone on ILM made the comparison with Mylo, and I can see where they're coming from.

(Incidentally, I've been away for aaaaages at festivals, hence the lack of txt response, but I haven't forgotten you! Left my phone at home today, grrrrr . . . )

Anyone who doesn't know who David Byrne is gives up the right to use the word "ever"

What, Woking?

Ich Ber Ein Binliner (Dada), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 10:45 (nineteen years ago)

Ah, lexpaws. I know you're not keen on That Kind Of Thing, but they're certainly not the worst band ever. They're not even the worst band on the MMP shortlist. But they're certainly the most hyped, which I kinda guess is what this question is about. Or at least that's what I want it to be about.

Sorry, this thread just reminds me why I don't go on ILM any more.

"parochial moanings"

a rapper singing about hos and bitches and money (Enrique), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 10:48 (nineteen years ago)

Yeh, I know what you mean kate. I am interested in how hype affects critical judgement in different people, but I guess I ain't gonna get that discussion here and now.

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 10:50 (nineteen years ago)

can we have a Moratorium on "oh, ....paws", please?

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 10:50 (nineteen years ago)

a rapper singing about hos and bitches and money (Enrique), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 10:51 (nineteen years ago)

I thought I was being ironic? But in a non-ironic way?

WASSSAAAAAAAAAAAAP!

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 10:52 (nineteen years ago)

Johnny, go and dig up an ILM thread called "what does it take to be the band you love to hate" or something like that. Where I was trying to discuss whether or not it was Hype that made simple dislike of a band turn to HATE HATE HATE GET IT OFF GET IT OFF style loathing.

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 10:52 (nineteen years ago)

i think they sound a bit like the house band on jay leno

-- (688), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 10:53 (nineteen years ago)

or jonathan ross, i forget which

-- (688), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 10:53 (nineteen years ago)

I would do, but I'm scared of using ILM search in case I kill everything, and googlesearching ILM is nonsense. (xpost to kate)

Sums up Woking rather well, I think.
