A refreshing honesty in a politician -- or it would have been if he had said this in public.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 18 September 2006 04:25 (nineteen years ago)

Is this ILX's first ever thread about Hungarian politics?

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Monday, 18 September 2006 07:06 (nineteen years ago)

One wonders whether this is a precursor to a genuine war on governmental bullshine, or an excuse to create more under the pretence of cleaning the old mess up. I wouldn't put it past him.

Jesus fuckin' Christ. This is the first time I realise that I live in a Banana Republic.

zeus (zeus), Monday, 18 September 2006 22:26 (nineteen years ago)

As the time I write this, the building of the National TV is in flames, cca. 800 metres from my home.

zeus (zeus), Monday, 18 September 2006 22:28 (nineteen years ago)

whzat a jzoke

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Monday, 18 September 2006 22:31 (nineteen years ago)

man, you were there.

Space Gourmand (Haberdager), Monday, 18 September 2006 22:31 (nineteen years ago)

But I don't want to be there. I want to live in the most boring country of the world. Switzerland? Denmark? Liechtenstein?

zeus (zeus), Monday, 18 September 2006 22:34 (nineteen years ago)

Western Sahara is almost certainly the most boring country in the world.

Space Gourmand (Haberdager), Monday, 18 September 2006 22:40 (nineteen years ago)

OK, I'm packing now.

zeus (zeus), Monday, 18 September 2006 22:45 (nineteen years ago)

Now the so called protesters invaded the building of the state TV. Police nowhere, a few cars burning outside, and thousands of people walking in and out from the building. Can't believe this.

Holy crap.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 19 September 2006 01:36 (nineteen years ago)

i have to say that this sort of violent demonstration is pretty disturbing but are more civil methods of communicating dissatisfaction even available? because it seems that if parties are willing to lie completely and totally during a campaign (please hold the cynical comparisons to the us and uk), then they may also be willing to rig referendum votes.

any thoughts zeus?

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 01:45 (nineteen years ago)

Zaccerlee; when the punters realise the level of contempt in which they are held by politicos, what choice is left?

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 07:13 (nineteen years ago)

I dunno, New Labour seem to have gotten away with it for 9 bastard years.

No Suntan, No Credibility (noodle vague), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 07:16 (nineteen years ago)

It's the 50th anniversary of the Uprising, let's have another one chaps!

Oh No It's Dadaismus! (Dada), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 08:32 (nineteen years ago)

we could have an ill-advised intervention in the middle-east at the same time... oh, hang on.

EARLY-90S MAN (Enrique), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 08:44 (nineteen years ago)

Well, dunno. It's important, that the largest part of the protesters were peaceful, just a minority of footie hooligans and right wing yobs attacked actually the TV. This is an extremely divided country, and I knew before that there are tensions, but this is worse than anyone could have imagined. But the most scary thing is, that 150 football hooligans can invade the state TV in a so-called democracy. Can you imagine Millwall and West Ham fans occupying the BBC?
Sorry for not being very consistent, but I'm still shocked.

zeus (zeus), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 09:31 (nineteen years ago)

as a Charlton Athletic fan I can imagine nothing worse. But at least they wouldn't let Palace in.

Space Gourmand (Haberdager), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 09:55 (nineteen years ago)

Why? Would they kick Iain Dowie in the ass?

zeus (zeus), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 10:11 (nineteen years ago)

They'd reroute the license fees to their respective transfer and wage budgets. Before you could say 'Inter-City Firm' we'd have Ronaldinho running down the wing for the Irons, whilst Millwall would merely have to settle for Robinho to drag them back up into the Premiership. The New Den becomes the carnival of SE London football, Charlton are forgotten, and Ian Dowie, indeed, receives that kick in the ass as we freefall down the leagues.

Space Gourmand (Haberdager), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 10:17 (nineteen years ago)

what's the latest on this?

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 08:05 (nineteen years ago)

Yesterday the protesters continued their peaceful demonstration at the Parliament, but the hooligan groups went to the hall of the Socialist Party, and had a fight with the police, who were much more determined than monday night and broke them up. Cca hundred of them got arrested, also a lot of injured policemen and hooligans. But now just a very few of the Hungarian society see the hooligans as revolutionists.

zeus (zeus), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 09:13 (nineteen years ago)

The Hungarian PM was on the BBC last night saying when he said, "We lied", he meant ALL politicians lied not just his party...

Oh No It's Dadaismus! (Dada), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 09:15 (nineteen years ago)

Everybody knows that all the Hungarian politicians lie, and knew it before the PM's "we screwed up" comments. Of course he's a twat, and perhaps he should've been resigned, but the country would not be a better place just because of that.

zeus (zeus), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 09:36 (nineteen years ago)

I think you'll find it's not just Hungarian politicians who lie!

Oh No It's Dadaismus! (Dada), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 09:39 (nineteen years ago)

I keep reading the quote in this thread title to the tune of either "Stuck in the Middle with You" or Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight".

No Suntan, No Credibility (noodle vague), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 11:04 (nineteen years ago)

Dadaismus: I know that too.

zeus (zeus), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 11:37 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, Gareth gets everywhere:
