(New CBS show about small-town Kansas in the wake of nucular war.)

I am normally a sucker for post-apocalyptic meltdowns, but I fear Deadwood and Oz and The Wire have ruined me for non-funny network shows.

I'm not normally a sucker for such things, but I sort of do wanna watch this. But I'm not going to cuz among other things we've got enough fearmongering.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 21 September 2006 23:22 (nineteen years ago)

Especially fearmongering with an endtimer coating.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 21 September 2006 23:24 (nineteen years ago)

I watched this last night and I was actually a bit disappointed. I kinda like Skeet Ulrich as the poor man's Depp, but everything he's in has a patina of midday TV movie about it.

The concept is great, but by the end of the show I had a sugar headache.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 21 September 2006 23:26 (nineteen years ago)

So, it wasnt at all apocalyptic or frightening, which I thought was the point! Maybe it'll get better.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 21 September 2006 23:27 (nineteen years ago)

It had no edge at all, which is pretty frustrating for something that should be dark.

The high point was the recording of the kid's mother as he just sits there playing it over and over.

milo z (mlp), Thursday, 21 September 2006 23:30 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah I liked that bit, it reminded me of that Safran Foer novel I've just read. But youre right, it had no edge at all!

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 21 September 2006 23:32 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think the target audience is looking for 'edge'.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 21 September 2006 23:33 (nineteen years ago)

You wouldn't know it the way it was marketed in Aus! Ads all week in a doomy voice "tomorrow is the last ordinary day you'll ever have" and shit.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 21 September 2006 23:38 (nineteen years ago)

I watched it, and was really hoping for The Day After or something akin to it. It didn't quite make it there. But, yeah, ditto on the soft spot for post-apocalyptic meltdowns.

I am normally a sucker for post-apocalyptic meltdowns, but I fear Deadwood and Oz and The Wire have ruined me for non-funny network shows.

I also have a thing for post-apocalyptic meltdowns, but I am finding it hard to watch anything other than the Wire now that there are new episodes airing as well. The curse of great television. I've even given up on Prison Break.

The Ultimate Conclusion (lokar), Thursday, 21 September 2006 23:57 (nineteen years ago)

I found myself telling my bf we should just go hire Threads.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 22 September 2006 00:01 (nineteen years ago)

I'm giving it a few more episodes. If they go with more moments like the answering machine, then I'll be watching each week.

There's a movie coming out soon, I can't remember the exact title, something along the lines of 'I Can't Let You In Honey, You're Irradiated!' about a bunch of dirty bombs going off in L.A. and one guy having to deal with the chaos, rioting, weird black crud falling from the sky and then having to seal himself inside his house. Of course, then his wife comes back from being in town and she's all nukey and such and y'know, he has to decide whether to let her in.

I'm a sucker for that stuff.

Ah, here we go, Right At Your Door.

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Friday, 22 September 2006 00:58 (nineteen years ago)

Hahah I would have perferred your first title Mikey!

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 22 September 2006 01:00 (nineteen years ago)

I have now dubbed Jericho 'That African-American Fellow From Snatch Is Up To Something, He Ain't No Damn Cop.'

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Friday, 22 September 2006 01:03 (nineteen years ago)

this is movie enough for me

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 22 September 2006 01:04 (nineteen years ago)

Sadly, any high-concept American TV show now suffers badly in comparison to Lost, which despite (tiny) flaws, continues to amaze on just about every level - it's sheer audacity and confidence, the execution of the concept, the production values.

Jericho might have risen above mehdom, if only they hadn't scarred it with that dreadful, cheap, plinky TV-movie music score. It was so jarring, even appearances by The Killers and Snow Patrol were welcome relief.

Huey in Melbourne (Huey in Melbourne), Friday, 22 September 2006 08:02 (nineteen years ago)

I too am normally a sucker for post-apocalyptic meltdowns (how many of us can there be?), which is why I'll carry on watching this, but yeah, it was shite, wasn't it?

The line about Atlanta was a good shocker, but otherwise -- very coy. And why isn't everyone running around screaming, "Ahhh! Radiation! Etc!"?

On bad taste fronts, it'll be worth staying with.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Friday, 22 September 2006 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

I think they want you to believe the black guy is an escaped convict, but that'll be a red herring in the end.

milo z (mlp), Friday, 22 September 2006 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

I was willing to give it a try, at least as unintended comedy. But after watching, it was slow. I'd bet it's just going to be a series of teasers with no resolution up until it's cancelled. The producer was a source of humor.

"There's something very pleasant about all the noise from L.A. and New York just going away."

Urnst Kouch (Urnst Kouch), Friday, 22 September 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

My girlfriend wanted to watch this but I said no way. There's also some other show called 'The 9' which looks a lot like Lost. When is that premiere anyway and why is no one talking about it?

def zep (calstars), Friday, 22 September 2006 20:55 (nineteen years ago)

That producer's quote is hilarious.

"There's something exciting about a survival story where you get back to a simpler life where neighbors matter."

Fuck, if thats his angle, I'm giving up on the show.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 23 September 2006 01:45 (nineteen years ago)

well I totally fell off the wagon here, but it sure sounded (I'm listening, not watching) towards the end of this one that they were going for the simpler life shtick, at least as a subplot. eww.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 5 October 2006 00:16 (nineteen years ago)

2nd ep wasnt quite so bad - loads of panicking and shootings and OMG get into the cellar. But now what? Its on tonight here, so no spoilz yet pls ;P

Incidentally this is the first ever network TV show in Aus to be shown simeltaneous to its US run. They usually wait months to mitigate the risk of flops, but people be torrenting, I guess, so they're trying this out.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 5 October 2006 00:55 (nineteen years ago)

It reminds me of Invasion a little (the us vs. unknown them, community in trouble aspects), but I can't help thinking as I'm watching it that I sure would rather be watching season 2 of Invasion.
