What the heck have they done to Hotmail?

It's gone all weird... no, I don't like it at all. They've tried to make it look "user friendly" and all, but I don't understand how to do anything any more on it...

What is the worst redesign of a website that you loved that turned it into an unusable techie nightmare?

masonic boom, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

NO SHIT! I Was astonished last night! WHat the F! It happened suddenly! I thnk it look s neat though

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Young Hanley is right, it does look neat. I am smitten with the new look.

Steven James, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I hate the new look, it is uselessly complicated, *AND* I can't get it to fucking MOVE. I don't know if that's my web connection or hotmail, but ILE is moving fine, but Hotmail dawdles like a 2-legged dog.

masonic boom, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah same. me no like.

duane, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hotmail is rubbish.

Ed, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

WHo is Hanley! I am Hanle y !

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have asked hotmail to marry me. We are to be wed next spring.

young_man_afraid_of_his_inbox, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Incidentaly, you can get poeple kicked of hotmail easily if you report them to abuse depo. because they never investigate, they just terminate. I think only robots work there.

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

how very strange indeed...

Geoff, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hotmail was not redesigned for ease of use or to make it look exciting or, God forbid, sexy, but rather to make it conform to MSN's corporate identity (http://www.msn.com/). To ask whether it easier to use or if it looks nicer is to miss the point. I'm just glad they haven't meddled with Instant Messenger (yet).

MarkH, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, I'm glad that MSN has their corporate branding and all, but when I'm unable to check the mail I've got in the past week, that doesn't exactly enamour me to them. I'm going to have to change my cookies to my Yahoo account and request that if anyone has sent me anything important, to mail me there.

masonic boom, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actuall MSN instant messenger recently "forgot" the buddy lists of thousands of users. Nice. I use aol IM

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

By the way, I have now officially given up on Hotmail and changed my address. Yes, this means surrendering my throne at the top of the Stats Cock. I wonder how long it will take for it to slip down to the bottom... or if, indeed, it will?

Kate the Saint, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kate your record high # of posts should not be abandoned. Go back. By the way did you ever get the email I sent to that address?

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't remember if I got it or not, and I can't get back in to check. Sorry!

I just wish I'd stopped posing one post earlier, that would have freaked me out. Maybe I can ask DG to delete exactly one post from me, to get me back down to the scary number and leave it as a testament or something. ;-)

Kate the Saint, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You can add Hotmail accounts to Outlook Express, and then never have to use the website again, save for internet cafes etc. Much easier.

m jemmeson, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That would assume that I was using Outcrook for mail, when in point of fact, I use Netscrape. ;-)

Kate the Saint, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It is awfully slow, isn't it? And I'm the one who usually brags about shit hot Telecom Company internet access.

Madchen, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I prefer Netscape too. But using Outlook just for Hotmail beats using the website.

m jemmeson, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like the new look, very swish, but then I don't actually use my hotmail account...

james e l, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like the new look. It's pretty sleek.

Michael Bourke, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Call me confused, but the first page doesn't seem to look any different than I had noticed before (admittedly I don't use hotmail at all!).

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's *REALLY* different inside. I nearly didn't recognise it, and thought I had been diverted to some crazy MSN website. I couldn't even *find* my inbox, and when I finally did, the connection was so slow it timed out before opening it. Sigh.

Kate the Saint, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

One day Linux will eat Windows maybe. Then we all happy.

Mike Hanley, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey Kate, did you get the stuff I emailed U re yr question on the "dirty dronerock boys" thread? Let me know if not, and I'll forward it to yer new address

best etc

Norman Fay, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nooooo! Dirty dronerock boys? Please forward, Norman!

Kate the Saint, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's terrible. They've overcomplicated things, as well as adding all of these intrusive msn offers & services. I'm going to use my newish email addy from now on, because hotmail has just become far too irritating.

What's up with 'y'all', y'all?

Nu-Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 10:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i hate it when i read from the top and think all this is happening now

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

anyone know how to fix my problem? I have to download Internet Explorer 6, but when I do, it won't execute because 'the application program that created it could not be found'. Using my old software, I can't create attachments.

I'm sure it's a simple problem but I'm a bit of a dummy. Any advice gratefully received.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I did that too stevem. I shy away from Hotmail like an overused metaphor, so I don't know these things.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

it's cause they changed the design again. I think it looks nice.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't seem to notice any difference in hotmail at all! Apart from they changed the little logo for the "unread" envelope.

But then again all i do on hotmail nowadays is checking every box and click delete cos there's nothing but "BE A B3TT3R L0V3R" and quite frankly i don't need it - can't get a shag anyway.

ken c, Tuesday, 2 December 2003 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

that's actually more literate than most of the spam I get, Ken. At least all of mine goes into the Junk folder. It's odd how the p3nis extension ones went from quite mild "Give her an extra inch" to downright abusive "You think you can please her with that maggot?" to silly and just about recognisable for what they are from the subject line "Ohhh yeah gtrrr2789!quojnm schlong".

oh how can you claim not to have seen any change in hotmail. It now displays Contacts separate from everything else and gives precedence to Contacts over other incoming mail! Which is daft. AND my new mail appeared at the bottom instead of the top where it usually does.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

it's much faster loading. too bad they still can't work out a viable junk mail filter...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm still getting used to the fact that "My Messages" means "Inbox." Also, they really like the idea of "Contacts," don't they?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

they want everybody to add everyone they know to their Contacts, bullies that they are.

I don't like the way the two little figures spin round and round when you open up the latest versh of Messenger.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

its annoying cos you got that first page before you get to know if you've got mail (unless its from yr contacts: for some reason my only contact is...MYSELF) at least before i could see oh new stuff in my inbox.

Working okay for me...

Acually, I pretty much completely neglected my hotmail account until right now! I checked it for the first time in months, and it just so happened that an old friend e-mailed me this morning! Fortuitous.

Will M., Friday, 9 November 2007 16:35 (eighteen years ago)

don't they still delete your account if you don't log in for 30 days? or is it just me that gets that treatment?

I had Hotmail for almost 6 years but dropped it like a hot potato when Gmail came along.

jaymc, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

for a personal email account (that's all i use it for) i've had little to no problems in the 5 years i've had it. i wouldn't rule out switching to gmail but right now i don't have much of a reason to do so.

Mark Clemente, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 16:08 (eighteen years ago)

Can't get an invite?

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 16:10 (eighteen years ago)

no reason learn a whole new system that gives you nothing that you don't already have (my needs are minimal)

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

That's fine. Personally, I really like how Gmail presents back-and-forth e-mail conversations within a single thread, and when it came out it was the only e-mail provider that let you search within your e-mail, but I also get about a million e-mails from my bandmates, so these advances were particularly welcome for me.

jaymc, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, hotmail was down for me early this morning, but up when I tried again a few hours later.

I've had my same account for about 10 years, and generally no problems -- just a hassle to search for anything in my old emails, or various folders I've created. but...it's hard to drop something after 10 years, even tho I have a gmail acct too.

Dominique, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

learn a whole new system?!?!

milo z, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 17:50 (eighteen years ago)

Wow I've had a hotmail account for almost 11 years wtf

Dan I., Tuesday, 26 February 2008 17:50 (eighteen years ago)

The threaded Gmail message groupings are the big thing for me. Can't for the life of me think why anyone still uses Hotmail in this day and age.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

because I hate "groupings"?

Now I'm getting "Service Unavailable."

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 17:55 (eighteen years ago)

I would have forwarded all my Hotmail messages to gmail a long time ago, but I'm afraid that hotmail will delete my account if I don't actually log into it.

Dan I., Tuesday, 26 February 2008 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

thank you, kingkong. I did get in about a half-hour ago, but now it's down again.

hey, hotmail, i luv yer new look it's so sexy

also love that you replace what i type with UNDEFINED as the entire body of the message when i hit send, thx. and that unless i select "mask as internet explorer" in opera i can't do shit at all. and that your new setup is forced on me and i have no other choice.

some of us are just old school. like loteks in a gibson novel, dood.

but after hotmail changing their interface about six times in as many months i'm pretty much sick of compensating for their crap and having to change security, java settings, permissions, etc. so back to gmail.
