I do not understand Sarah Jane Smith's outfits

I am totally baffled by Sarah Jane's attire. Was this how Britishers trendily dressed in the '70s (like Rose Tyler's getups might look in 30 years)? Was she supposed to be comically dowdy or a totally wacky dresser like the stereotypical sitcom secretary? Or are they just purposelessly odd?

Can anyone explain?

Yes, this was perfectly common attire in Surrey, England, where I grew up in the early 70's. There were plenty of women who dressed like Sarah-Jane, many of them in the TV industry. My mum dressed like her, so did all her friends. Hard to believe now, but back then The Two Ronnies was funny too.

It were a strange time in a strange country. I suppose we were all waiting for Vivienne Westwood to put fashion back on track.

"Should I wear my lavender overalls or puffy red bloomers with these clogs?"

Sarah Jane Smith = easily one of the top 5 companions ever.

HI DERE, Friday, 27 April 2007 13:03 (nineteen years ago)

i like her new 'leathery' look also.

blueski, Friday, 27 April 2007 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

Did girls in the late 60s really wear sparkly catsuits ala Zoe Heriot?

Only if they were from the future

I recall a neighbour of ours on the Surrey estate where I was brought up wearing clothes like this in summer. I think Surry fashion (if that's the word) made it onto BBC TV because Surry was basically where all the TV people lived, including my family. The men's fashion is equally worth looking at - it was sort of a flared 70's extrapolation of Swinging 60's Britain, but filtered through the middleclass tellyocracy. I think The Goodies, especially Graeme Gardner (spelling?), illustrate this look. See his look this link:

That was my dad and all his friends going to work. This was what they wore on weekends (without the 'G' on the overalls of course):

Another useful point of reference is the Kenny Everett Video Show.

the key episodes for SJS style are the hand of fear and the five doctors.

four months pass...

SJS Adventures started yesterday during CBBC on BBC1. the slitheen have taken over all the schools. 30 minute episodes = return of the cliffhangers. (except they've replaced them with spoilers for next episode. wish they'd stop that)

was ok, y'know, for kids...

My kids are hyper for this. Dr Who with none of the boring love bits.

Best episode ever!

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 10:09 (eighteen years ago)

Wasn't bad, that SJS thing. The two episodes about as good, if not better, than Aliens of London/WWIII. And the Slitheen are bright green now, and work better on a straight, out-and-out children's programme.

K-9 is in this right?

jessie monster, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

no. they don't have the rights. he was in the pilot for a few seconds but i don't think he'll be in this new thing much, if at all.

koogs, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 09:02 (eighteen years ago)

I have t0rr3nt3d but not watched yet. I'm kind of torn over this first story though, because in a back-handed way it weakens the special-ness of The Doctor. You know, in that the Slitheen weren't actually anything special and can actually be beaten by a middle-aged woman and a couple of kids.

aldo, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 12:26 (eighteen years ago)

You are forgetting that we are talking about:

A) A middle-aged woman who travelled with the Doctor and learned some tricks from him; and
B) the Slitheen.

Can't get a good screengrab of this, but Liz Shaw in "Ambassadors of Death" is totally rocking the Lady Penelope look, hat & all.
