55. Why Politics Matter - Gerry Stoker

Ned Trifle II, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 09:36 (nineteen years ago)

seven years pass...

The list died, but this looks like the best ILX thread for this. Highly recommend Matt Bai's All the Truth Is Out: The Week Politics Went Tabloid, about the Gary Hart scandal (I'm not quite finished). One thing the books does is correct some of the timeline misconceptions: Hart's "follow me around" line did not trigger the chain of events, they were already moving quickly, and the yacht photo of Hart and Rice wasn't published until after all the fallout. Conceding that Bai obviously likes Gary Hart, I think he makes a credible case for Hart being a much more serious figure than the caricature that came out of those events. Mainly, though, the book's main idea, contained in the subtitle, is very convincing. It was like a perfect storm of a lot of things that were just getting off the ground--CNN, tabloid shows like A Current Affair, fax machines, and portable cameras, primarily--and things happened that were unprecedented.
