he's busy with the the8tre

gabbneb, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:07 (nineteen years ago)

was beyond the sea any good? i voted for LA confidential.

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:09 (nineteen years ago)

It's very extremely painfully obvious it's LA Confidential.

Drooone, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:12 (nineteen years ago)

discount fred claus at your peril

tremendoid, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:37 (nineteen years ago)

Most of the movie names listed after LA Confidential are made up, right?

Kerm, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:40 (nineteen years ago)

Pay It Forward FTW

milo z, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:46 (nineteen years ago)

does he still show up to awards shows with his mom? that's classic old school hollywood style for closet cases, a la Clifton Webb.

gershy, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:55 (nineteen years ago)

he's very cute in that pic. i think LA Conf was best of what i've seen. also good tho in The Shipping News.

Se7en

Eric H., Thursday, 17 May 2007 05:04 (nineteen years ago)

the shipping news was gawdawful, sorry...

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 17 May 2007 05:08 (nineteen years ago)

parts of it/and some casting didn't work at all. still thought he was good

SusanD, Thursday, 17 May 2007 05:26 (nineteen years ago)

No love for hammy Lex Luthor then?

ailsa, Thursday, 17 May 2007 06:56 (nineteen years ago)

Since the poll isn't about his best movie, only the most recent good one, I went with David Gale. I think I'm the only person in the country who liked it, tho.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 May 2007 07:29 (nineteen years ago)

The Big Kahuna is really underrated.

John Justen, Thursday, 17 May 2007 07:35 (nineteen years ago)

k-pax all the way. whaddamovie

latebloomer, Thursday, 17 May 2007 09:05 (nineteen years ago)

Dr. Mark Powell: on the reproductive process of K-paxians: If it's such a pain procedure, then how do you reproduce?
Prot: As carefully as possible.

latebloomer, Thursday, 17 May 2007 09:08 (nineteen years ago)

shame they didn't do a tie-in with tampax. that would've opened the film to a whole new demographic.

namely, vaginas.

latebloomer, Thursday, 17 May 2007 09:14 (nineteen years ago)

i like 'the negotiator'.

ghost rider, Thursday, 17 May 2007 13:21 (nineteen years ago)

he's lucky he did Big Kahuna and that I've watched it otherwise I guess LA Confidential even though that movie is basically stupid overlong pulp

TOMBOT, Thursday, 17 May 2007 13:25 (nineteen years ago)

I liked "Superman Returns".

HI DERE, Thursday, 17 May 2007 13:26 (nineteen years ago)

That's because you're stupid.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 17 May 2007 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

The best part of the Big Kahuna though is when Danny Devito has his dream sequence suicide, just kind of nonchalantly tipping himself out the hotel window during a party

TOMBOT, Thursday, 17 May 2007 13:28 (nineteen years ago)

That's because you're stupid.

No, that's because I have no standards; get it right.

HI DERE, Thursday, 17 May 2007 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

all thru Superman Returns i was thinking 'this is dumb...that doesn't really work' but i still cried a bit when he visits his sleeping son. Spacey is the best thing about it but he doesn't get to hit top gear in his role which is a shame.

i haven't seen many Spacey films but i voted K-Pax just to fuck wit y'all

blueski, Thursday, 17 May 2007 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

wait, i'm the only person who kind of likes midnight in the garden of good and evil, aren't i

VOTE FOR THE REF

David R., Thursday, 17 May 2007 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

I kind of like MitGoGaG but I only saw half of it before falling asleep.

HI DERE, Thursday, 17 May 2007 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

omigod he was in Goldmember?!

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 17 May 2007 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, he was the member.

HI DERE, Thursday, 17 May 2007 14:11 (nineteen years ago)

PAY THAT SHIT FORWARD

sanskrit, Thursday, 17 May 2007 14:11 (nineteen years ago)

I can't decide if "Pay It Forward" or "K-Pax" or "The Life of David Gale" is the most useless movie on that resume.

HI DERE, Thursday, 17 May 2007 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

no wonder you can't decide with that glaring lack of standards

TOMBOT, Thursday, 17 May 2007 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

K-Pax. God, I am still so angry.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Thursday, 17 May 2007 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

No love for hammy Lex Luthor then?

Some from me, but only because he was basically doing homage to Gene Hackman.

Wow, Spacey has made some stinking films. His accent in Ordinary Decent Criminal is more of a fuck-you to the Irish people than any misery Brad Pitt ever inflicted on us. Though still, nothing beats Tom Cruise.

accentmonkey, Thursday, 17 May 2007 14:26 (nineteen years ago)

Superman Returns was nice, but not notable. The big Kahuna nearly hit it's mark and Spacey was fun. Midnight in the Garden was good, if a little self indulgent, and not quite as clever as was intended. Never read the book. Spacey was more than competent and a pleasure to watch.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Thursday, 17 May 2007 14:29 (nineteen years ago)

'94-'95: the killer trifecta of Swimming with Sharks, Usual Suspects, and Se7en

Joe, Thursday, 17 May 2007 14:44 (nineteen years ago)

swimming with sharks is a weak movie tho.

WRIGHT

David R., Thursday, 17 May 2007 17:09 (nineteen years ago)

I voted for "Hurlyburly" -- not the world's finest movie, but it's interesting, and he's great in it.

kenan, Thursday, 17 May 2007 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

no, ally. i liked midnight in the garden of good and evil too

remy bean, Thursday, 17 May 2007 17:21 (nineteen years ago)

shipping news is the funniest movie of whatever year it came out in

gff, Thursday, 17 May 2007 17:28 (nineteen years ago)

Pay It Forward, although not as "WTF are you doing?" as K-PAX, still somehow manages to actually be a worse movie.

John Justen, Thursday, 17 May 2007 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

Edison (2005) .... Levon Wallace

neva hoid of it

gff, Thursday, 17 May 2007 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

I think I watched about four minutes of "Pay It Forward" before going "This is the cinematic equivalent of a nutsack" and cancelling HBO.

HI DERE, Thursday, 17 May 2007 17:32 (nineteen years ago)

That's like cancelling The Movie Channel for showing Alone in the Dark!

David R., Thursday, 17 May 2007 17:35 (nineteen years ago)

The only movie showing on my flight back from Ireland?

Pay It Forward

(To make it better, the only option on the way over was that fucking Cuba Gooding Jr./De Niro navy divers movie.)

John Justen, Thursday, 17 May 2007 17:35 (nineteen years ago)

I liked Big Kahuna but I'm hesitant to vote for it, for fear that my vote might be seen as an implication that I thought American Beauty was good.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 17 May 2007 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

Psh, like I'd ever order The Movie Channel.

John, I'd watch that navy movie a million times if only for the dismemberment.

HI DERE, Thursday, 17 May 2007 17:37 (nineteen years ago)

(If choosing between that and "Pay It Forward", I mean.)

HI DERE, Thursday, 17 May 2007 17:38 (nineteen years ago)

Psh, like I'd ever order The Movie Channel.

Psh, like you have standards!

David R., Thursday, 17 May 2007 17:39 (nineteen years ago)

I also voted for Hurlyburly as Meg Ryan got pushed out of a moving car.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 17 May 2007 17:40 (nineteen years ago)

he's so horrible.

LA Confidential hands down

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 17 May 2007 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

Psh, like you have standards!

When it comes to me paying every month for some crap, I do!

HI DERE, Thursday, 17 May 2007 17:46 (nineteen years ago)

Saw him do O'Neill twice onstage, credibly; he's a good actor who was sorta destroyed by becoming a movie star.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 17 May 2007 17:47 (nineteen years ago)

I also voted for Hurlyburly as Meg Ryan got pushed out of a moving car.

And Gary Shandling as Evil Incarnate! Who knew?

kenan, Thursday, 17 May 2007 17:48 (nineteen years ago)

I thought Midnight... was pretty good, but I may have only seen half of it in a hotel room.

Jordan, Thursday, 17 May 2007 17:48 (nineteen years ago)

that fucking Cuba Gooding Jr./De Niro navy divers movie

what a wierd movie! was the world crying out for a very serious film about dudes in old timey brass helmets??

gff, Thursday, 17 May 2007 17:48 (nineteen years ago)

Carl Brashear, born in 1931 to sharecroppers, joins the Navy and, after watching the heroics of Billy Sunday, the White son of a sharecropper, determines to become the Navy's first African-American diver. At the Bayonne, N.J., divers' training camp, Sunday is his instructor, and Brasher must endure hazing verging on the murderous. With Sunday and the camp's commander dead set against Brashear's graduating, his physical skills and steely determination, which he got from his father, see him through. Carl and Billy's paths cross again when each needs rehabilitation one from an injury, the other from bitterness. Their wives look on with awe and frustration.

Yes. Not great but pretty satisfying. Chandor knows what he's doing and it's a strong cast.
