So i am going to put my super old TV out on the curb. i think. maybe. now.

i was talking with a friend this morning abt the narrowness of my apartment and was thinking that the TV is too giant and 70s old and i never watch it (though you know i watch tv, of course, internetstyle), but at the same time, to not have a television set?? should i put it in a closet just in case, uh, like i need to watch something urgent on one of the 4 channels i get? everything is online now anyway. i just have minor apprehension abt it.

rrrobyn, Thursday, 24 May 2007 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

if i really need another tv another tv will happen, somehow.

i gotta let go.

i'm going to put a note on it: "works! like a tv!"

rrrobyn, Thursday, 24 May 2007 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

Could you get a more modern one in the near future?

Ms Misery, Thursday, 24 May 2007 18:24 (nineteen years ago)

not for a while - and i'd want a small, more flat one - i mean, what do i ever watch? the occassional oprah and coronation street. but sometimes it's nice to have the tv on, every once in a while.

i am working up to this
the tv is sort of looking at me

rrrobyn, Thursday, 24 May 2007 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

no, in the near future, everything will be anachronistic, if you want modern you have to get it now

TOMBOT, Thursday, 24 May 2007 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

livephotoblog your TV on the curb

dan m, Thursday, 24 May 2007 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

i have never spent money on a tv. ever.
yet have always had one. so i figure it'll happen again one day anyway.

xpost
i will do that

rrrobyn, Thursday, 24 May 2007 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

This is what freecycling was made for.

Jaq, Thursday, 24 May 2007 18:43 (nineteen years ago)

mtl streets are like freecycling in action everyday

poor old rca tv, i just can't have you anymore :/

rrrobyn, Thursday, 24 May 2007 18:50 (nineteen years ago)

can i?

rrrobyn, Thursday, 24 May 2007 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

whoa! ditch it. Or turn it into a planter.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 24 May 2007 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

just don't let the garbageman take it, try to have it recycled if no one else wants it. a friend of mine wrote an article on the impact of CRT/TV monitor disposal:

http://thephoenix.com/article_ektid28678.aspx

p.s. nothing good is ever on anyway so yeah chuck it

Edward III, Thursday, 24 May 2007 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

it has a special green tint that these modern tvs just don't have
sigh

i have unplugged it and it is in front of the door

but, yes, i am going to wait to take it out until after the garbage truck comes b/c it is garbage day

my apartment suddenly looks big!

rrrobyn, Thursday, 24 May 2007 18:59 (nineteen years ago)

You can always look at its photo. Someone will take it home and be happy with it. You can do this.

Or, put it in a closet for 1 week and if you don't take it out to watch it, get rid of it then.

Jaq, Thursday, 24 May 2007 18:59 (nineteen years ago)

when I got rid of my old 70s TV I was surprised at how hard it is to actually damage/cave-in those old screens

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 24 May 2007 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

there is a cat where my tv used to be

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/222/512489499_503765240d_o.jpg

i have committed to putting it on the curb
i will not smash it either

rrrobyn, Thursday, 24 May 2007 19:06 (nineteen years ago)

the tv, not the cat

rrrobyn, Thursday, 24 May 2007 19:07 (nineteen years ago)

though it would be pretty funny to keep the tv and put the piece of electrical tape on which i've written "works!! like a tv." on the cat on the curb

rrrobyn, Thursday, 24 May 2007 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

aww, poor kitty. I'm sure you use him more than the TV.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 24 May 2007 19:11 (nineteen years ago)

works like a cat
for food
i gave my giant perfectly working color tv away yesterday
to a dishwasher
he likes spanish shows
my tv had none
only simpsons
and 24
and Tyra
he will lovce Tyra
shes kinda spanish
tvs are really expensive
until you want to get rid of one
then they seem worthless
all they want to do is make you happy
fucker

rrrobyn, Thursday, 24 May 2007 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

i have messaged back
it has not helped my tv issue however

rrrobyn, Thursday, 24 May 2007 19:33 (nineteen years ago)

i have also eaten some olives

rrrobyn, Thursday, 24 May 2007 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

Ooooh, olives! Someone just brought me a cupcake. It was great.

ENBB, Thursday, 24 May 2007 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

now it is just staring at me

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/217/512536419_f89d5f1efb_o.jpg

i rearranged furniture slightly. it is weird.

tv is such a presence. i know it is just tubes and circuits but, hm.

rrrobyn, Thursday, 24 May 2007 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

tv has a face. You watch it and it watches you. I don't like them much.

Jaq, Thursday, 24 May 2007 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

robyn you are a treat

and what, Thursday, 24 May 2007 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

Your cat looks like it doesn't want the TV to go :-(

StanM, Thursday, 24 May 2007 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

i think the key is to rearrange my furniture as i have now so that there is no 'empty spot' in which a tv would seem likely to go - e.g., one friend of mine has no tv and you don't notice the absence b/c she's got lots of other things around (w/o being cluttered) and another friend is all minimal and has this big low old radio bookshelf thing with nothing on it where i always think a tv should be, so i feel it's missing. but yeah, no tv in small living room is way friendlier. i bet i will have more dinner parties.

xpost
haha
xpost
cat got bored of tv and is sitting on tv table again. am taking it as a sign.

rrrobyn, Thursday, 24 May 2007 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

Here's a thread that won't help you at all!

You have two old television sets that don't work. What do you DO?

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 24 May 2007 20:30 (nineteen years ago)

i bet i will have more dinner parties.

Haha, but you don't even have a table!

jaymc, Thursday, 24 May 2007 20:31 (nineteen years ago)

do you have a table in .xls for which ilxers have tables?

and what, Thursday, 24 May 2007 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

ha ha!

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 24 May 2007 20:37 (nineteen years ago)

that thread was unhelpful! but had some good pictures
xpost
lol

i also can have like 8 people max. in my place
tables are for old people and little girls

rrrobyn, Thursday, 24 May 2007 20:38 (nineteen years ago)

To have tea parties at.

Laurel, Thursday, 24 May 2007 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

My house has been much more pleasant since moving the tv etc into one of the little bedrooms and turning it into a "theater" sort of setting, while opening up the living room space to circular seating and open floor. My relationship with tv is much better now that it lives off in its own room where it can either be ignored or lavished with attention.

nickalicious, Thursday, 24 May 2007 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

Tables are also for playing cards/scrabble/etc on.

nickalicious, Thursday, 24 May 2007 20:50 (nineteen years ago)

one could say the same thing abt beds

oh i wld totally have a tv/music/entertainment/surround-sound/space-stn meets forest replica room a++

rrrobyn, Thursday, 24 May 2007 20:54 (nineteen years ago)

i actually do have a card table, in the closet
i found it on the sidewalk last year!

rrrobyn, Thursday, 24 May 2007 20:55 (nineteen years ago)

and so the circle must remain unbroken
soon the garbage trucks will come
and soon the tv will see the curb

rrrobyn, Thursday, 24 May 2007 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

take the tube out, install a hydroponic herb garden

river wolf, Thursday, 24 May 2007 21:56 (nineteen years ago)

watch them grow!

river wolf, Thursday, 24 May 2007 21:56 (nineteen years ago)

that is the wrong move for me in so many ways, but don't think i didn't think abt it

bonus to this: organized all the wires etc that were hidden under a chair that i moved over a foot. these will stay organized for about 2 more hours and then spontaneously disorganize themselves. without the chair shelter i don't know what they'll do. i am sleeping with the light on.

garbage truck won't be here for at least 1.5hrs. tv's presence is waning the longer it is unplugged. but it is there.

did i mention the high-pitched whine? it was hard to predict when it would happen but it would

rrrobyn, Thursday, 24 May 2007 22:07 (nineteen years ago)

old teevees are best cuz they glow cuzza tubes like an electric fireplace they draw you in and keep you warm
new teevees don't do this you can go right by them and keep on going byebye and it ain't no thing

scott seward, Thursday, 24 May 2007 23:03 (nineteen years ago)

I have a 6-yr-old rather large TV that I got at a pawn shop, and I never watch the fucker.

Defenestrate it.

kenan, Thursday, 24 May 2007 23:07 (nineteen years ago)

Your, I mean, not mine. Mine can stay.

kenan, Thursday, 24 May 2007 23:08 (nineteen years ago)

Have you ever been to one of those gatherings where people bring their old TVs and smash them with sledgehammers? Look for one of those. They're fun.

kenan, Thursday, 24 May 2007 23:10 (nineteen years ago)

TV haiku :

Old and unwanted
abandoned on the pavement
it leaves a sad stain

C J, Friday, 25 May 2007 07:40 (nineteen years ago)

did i mention the high-pitched whine? it was hard to predict when it would happen but it would

my mum's old huge CRT tv, which she gave me before xmas, does this too. i often fall asleep with the tv way down low, but the high-pitched whistle can seem really loud sometimes...

stevie, Friday, 25 May 2007 09:39 (nineteen years ago)

The last time we had problems with a TV was when I was maybe six years old. We were all sitting around the table and I could watch telly. "Mummy, the TV is acting all strange." They looked. There was smoke coming out. hahaha

nathalie, Friday, 25 May 2007 11:21 (nineteen years ago)

I think rrrobyn might be my favorite ilxor

Edward III, Friday, 25 May 2007 13:58 (nineteen years ago)

it has not been returned to the curb this morning! phew

(slocki stop stalking me)
(it's st 1aur3nt)

rrrobyn, Friday, 25 May 2007 16:02 (nineteen years ago)

it's a close call but frankly the quality of your tv's posts have been falling off lately.

Edward III, Friday, 25 May 2007 16:11 (nineteen years ago)

meanwhile the quality of your own posts about your tv have increased in inverse proportion.

Edward III, Friday, 25 May 2007 16:13 (nineteen years ago)

hold on I just confused myself

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

I saw a TV left out in a heavy rain the other day and thought sadly of this thread.
