I haven't even seen half of these but I thought he was great in Quiet Man. After that I would have picked Liberty Valence or Searchers.

I voted for "True Grit" anyway. I know it's not the best one, but it was the 1st John Wayne movie I saw when I was a kid (I was 4 when it was made!), I was completely spellbound by it, and can still recall some of the scenes from it.

i chose Rio Bravo for Stumpy.. although i'm kind of wary of the film after reading about its origins. apparently hawks/wayne collaborated to make a conservative response to "high noon," which wayne called something like "the most un-american things i've ever seen."

:( but eh, it's not like the pacifist army actually shows up in "Rio Bravo", so easy enough to dismiss that stance as just another grumpy Hawks Work Ethic whimsy. It's still an awesome movie.

After canceling a couple other Henry Hathaway retro screenings, the NYFF is promising a 35mm 'scope print of North to Alaska tonight, which I haven't seen since it was on WABC's 4:30 Movie in the '70s. Whaddya think? Duke in a fistfight with Ernie Kovacs is not to be sneezed at.
