I've been mucking about with some stylesheet stuff. Not something I know a lot about, but just trying to tidy some stuff up on a new stylesheet, and I think to make it look the way I want it to look, I'm going to have to move some stuff about, principally, the menu, to the top of the screen, rather than in between the thread title and the messages, so for example:
http://www.ilxor.com/ilx1.png http://www.ilxor.com/ilx2.png
However, this change would apply to all stylesheets. Obviously, this is an extremely touchy subject for some.
What do people think? Anyone going to get overly upset if I make this change?

i think that after all the work you've put in, you can do whatever you want to style!
― tehresa, Sunday, 27 May 2007 18:15 (nineteen years ago)
some people will whine, but eventually they'll get used to it and still be glad they have a board to post on!
Ha... Well, I'm just trying to avoid 3,000 people screaming at me!
― Keith, Sunday, 27 May 2007 18:16 (nineteen years ago)
thread title below navigation makes more sense to me. looks good.
― blueski, Sunday, 27 May 2007 18:18 (nineteen years ago)
I love the font.
― Tape Store, Sunday, 27 May 2007 18:18 (nineteen years ago)
That looks really nice. Go for it.
― Matt DC, Sunday, 27 May 2007 18:24 (nineteen years ago)
Moving the menu above the title is purely trivial to useability and makes no difference to me.
Both choices appear to have opted for sans-serif typefaces. I find the seriffed typefaces easier to read, even though they look less modern. I hope these typefaces are not enforced, but again, it is not a deal breaker by any means. Merely a small matter of personal preference.
Thanks for all the work you've done and will do on our behalf. I greatly appreciate it.
― Aimless, Sunday, 27 May 2007 18:26 (nineteen years ago)
Cool... Cheers guys.
Aimless - it's just a stylesheet that you can choose in your preferences. I you can probably tell your browser to display it in a serifed font - I believe serifed fonts are supposed to be easier to read.
If you do want one that's the same, but with a serifed font set up on it, let me know which font, and I'll sort it out.
― Keith, Sunday, 27 May 2007 18:27 (nineteen years ago)
makes sense to me
― RJG, Sunday, 27 May 2007 18:28 (nineteen years ago)
times new roman - it's the standard for a reason
― lfam, Sunday, 27 May 2007 18:29 (nineteen years ago)
Links above the title = awesome.
Sans serif can be easier to read on a monitor, but I don't have any strong opinion I guess.
xpost: The reason = it was Word's default. It's a terrible font.
― Casuistry, Sunday, 27 May 2007 18:30 (nineteen years ago)
i thought verdana was the standard
― am0n, Sunday, 27 May 2007 18:32 (nineteen years ago)
san serifs are sometimes easier to read on a monitor if your browser has bad hinting support.
― lfam, Sunday, 27 May 2007 18:32 (nineteen years ago)
no, arial is the standard ^_^
― lfam, Sunday, 27 May 2007 18:33 (nineteen years ago)
plz plz dont change to san serif - the dont give a fuck serifd action is one of the key aesthetics of ilx. we dont want this place looking all smooth and clean, understand.
― jhøshea, Sunday, 27 May 2007 18:40 (nineteen years ago)
oh and thx for making the ø work!
Actually my main bugbear with the way ILX looks right now is the unnecessarily large margins on the New Answers page, if you could make them smaller in any redesign that would be greatly appreciated.
― Matt DC, Sunday, 27 May 2007 18:41 (nineteen years ago)
Could serif vs. sans serif be a user pref?
― Rock Hardy, Sunday, 27 May 2007 18:45 (nineteen years ago)
jhøshea, I'm not planning on changing the default ILX look at all, just add in a new stylesheet to the preferences page that looks like it does above - the only thing that would change to the default look (and the other ones), is that the menu moves.
Incidentally, the default isn't serifed now - not on my machine anyway - I guess you just have your browser set up to display the default font as a serifed one.
Matt - yeah, I know what you mean; I have made that change in the above stylesheet. The bullet points make it indent more than looks good.
x-post - Rock, you can tell your browser to do that, though it would apply across the board. It's kind of hard to make it a preference, but happy to make two stylesheets, one with serifs and one without.
― Keith, Sunday, 27 May 2007 18:47 (nineteen years ago)
the font issue is irrelevant - no font specified means people can set their own via browser settings, thankfully.
― blueski, Sunday, 27 May 2007 18:49 (nineteen years ago)
i mean i am quite keen on being able to set my own choice of font so wouldn't want that specified in the CSS at all.
― blueski, Sunday, 27 May 2007 18:50 (nineteen years ago)
LET'S TALK TURKEY
― sanskrit, Sunday, 27 May 2007 18:52 (nineteen years ago)
HOW MANY BUFFY DVD'S YOU NEED HERE?
Rock, you can tell your browser to do that
duhhhhh, I'm running on too little sleep.
― Rock Hardy, Sunday, 27 May 2007 18:53 (nineteen years ago)
Irony aside, Arial is a Helvetica clone created for folks who didn't want to pay license fees to Adobe.

le duh
― lfam, Sunday, 27 May 2007 19:40 (nineteen years ago)
I like the look of this Keith. Maybe you could implement it for a week or two then have a vote, using the handy new poll option as to what the default should be.
― Billy Dods, Sunday, 27 May 2007 19:50 (nineteen years ago)
Sure... Whatever people think.
― Keith, Sunday, 27 May 2007 19:59 (nineteen years ago)
i think it's absolutely fucking shit.
no, of course i don't really. i think it's eminently reasonable.
― grimly fiendish, Sunday, 27 May 2007 20:03 (nineteen years ago)
Is the only non-stylesheet change the switch on the navbar?
― stet, Sunday, 27 May 2007 20:09 (nineteen years ago)
I really like that stylesheet change. I'd be all for it.
― Kate, non masonic, Sunday, 27 May 2007 20:13 (nineteen years ago)
Thanks...
Stet, yes... Well a couple of other trivialities. Doubt anyone would notice. Except of course for EVERYONE ON ILX.
― Keith, Sunday, 27 May 2007 20:17 (nineteen years ago)
New style is available on the Sandbox:
http://www.ilxor.com:8090/ILX/index.jsp
You need to go into preferences and change it to simple.css
― Keith, Sunday, 27 May 2007 20:41 (nineteen years ago)
keith can you plz bring back the sandbox pink bar thx
― jhøshea, Sunday, 27 May 2007 20:53 (nineteen years ago)
I've put a message up, now. It's not pink though. Are you particularly keen on pink?!
― Keith, Sunday, 27 May 2007 20:56 (nineteen years ago)
yeah a lot of us are - maybe a poll, no?
― jhøshea, Sunday, 27 May 2007 20:58 (nineteen years ago)
oh hey the white-on-black is pretty cool
― Curt1s Stephens, Sunday, 27 May 2007 20:58 (nineteen years ago)
WHOA it changed over here too!
― Curt1s Stephens, Sunday, 27 May 2007 20:59 (nineteen years ago)
oh wait I see there have already been CSS's here haven't there
Stet is proud of his Goth stylesheet.
― Keith, Sunday, 27 May 2007 21:00 (nineteen years ago)
really good changes, keith. especially thumbs up to the (sandbox) option to hide admin commands. and it makes all the sense in the world to have the menu at the top of the page; i think it's a keeper.
funny thing about the goth stylesheet is that not all of the pages, including the change style page, have white typeface, so the commands are invisible. made me lol.
thanks again for everything.
― lxy, Sunday, 27 May 2007 21:12 (nineteen years ago)
I don't know if Keith is still here, but I've made some fixes to the naus.css stylesheet so that it no longer scrolls horizontally and also keeps the bookmark stuff invisible. Please to replace with:
body {background-color: #ffaaaa;}div {font-family: comic sans ms;}div.message {background-image: url(http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/589/pingintl7.gif); background-repeat: no-repeat; background-position: center bottom; padding-bottom: 50px; margin-bottom: 50px; padding-left: 10px;}hr {visibility: hidden;}formatting {display: none;}.textbox, .smalltextbox, tinytextbox {color : #000000;border: 2px solid #AAAAAA; width: 600px;}.bookmark {cursor: pointer;color: #0000CC;font-weight: normal;}.bookmarked {position: fixed; display: none; color: #080; background-color: #FFF; top: 1em; right: 1em; padding: 0.3em; border: 1px #000 solid;}.unbookmarked {position: fixed; display: none; color: #080; background-color: #FFF; top: 1em; right: 1em; padding: 0.3em; border: 1px #000 solid;}
