Se I am now the possessor of a Beard of Wisdom and power (or possibly Fisher Priceā„¢ My First Beard). It is working rather well for me so far. However I would like to do interesting things with it so tell me:

1) Trimming, what's best?
2) Conditioning, should I?
3) Waxing and shaping, how to?

We should also talk about beards in general

WAXING AND SHAPING??

g-kit, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 09:07 (nineteen years ago)

I don't have the courage to live with the itching after a couple days of not shaving, so I don't know anything about beards. However, I do know that the specialists (and The World's Largest Online Collection of Bearded Images) live over here: http://beardcommunity.com/

FAQ

Ed, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 09:09 (nineteen years ago)

1) Trimming, what's best?

I use my hair trimmer to shorten the beard and for rough trimming. If I want a finer trim, then I use a manual razor. The hair trimmer is much better at trimming than an electric razor, but it leaves a stubble, so if you don't have full beard, then you have to use a razor to make the beardless parts smooth.

2) Conditioning, should I?

I wash my beard with shampoo, which seems to work fine. Never have used a conditioner, and they're bit of a sham anyway, even for hair.

3) Waxing and shaping, how to?

I've never done it, but lately I've been thinking of giving it a try. I wonder if there's some special beard wax?

"wrist op" = euphemism for beard implant?

StanM, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 11:05 (nineteen years ago)

If I could find my camera, I would post a picture of the hilarious proto-beard going on on my chin.

I'm genetically prohibited from ever, ever growing proper facial hair, but I decided to just not shave my chin this summer. Three weeks in, it looks like Shaggy from Scooby Doo, 15 or so half-inch-long whiskers holding on for dear life.

I do know, from living with a bearded one, that a foofy brush-and-razor kit is u+k in proper beardcare.

haha ed i knew this'd be you...

i am shit at beards. although perhaps i'll have another go now it's Going Grey...

I have a Wahl trimmer, one that alleges to suck the trimmed hairs into a compartment for easier cleanup and to keep them out of the hands of voodoo practitioners, but it's a piece of crap. I do recommend the Wahl Groomsman trimmer, though -- I had one that served well for about 15 years before it conked out.

I don't use shampoo or conditioner on the beard. I just wash my face, beard and all, with the usual bar of soap. But on days that I'm shaving neck and cheeks, I avoid getting soap there.

I tried growing my beard long once, a total disaster. Unfortunately, a disaster that was caught on film for my passport photo.

I (usually) keep mine fairly short and have found no need for shampoo or wax. Until it gets to the point where you measure it in inches, just shape it with a trimmer and/or scissors and you'll be fine.

Ed, Friday, 29 June 2007 13:48 (eighteen years ago)

I think I should contribute that to the Americanisms thread.

Ed, Friday, 29 June 2007 13:48 (eighteen years ago)

Tracer Hand, Friday, 29 June 2007 13:50 (eighteen years ago)

unless you are complaining about the consequences of a curry

Tracer Hand, Friday, 29 June 2007 13:50 (eighteen years ago)

Never have used a conditioner, and they're bit of a sham anyway, even for hair.

People who say things like this clearly have never had to struggle with trying to brush a great mane of unconditioned, curly hair.

I wish I could grow a beard.

accentmonkey, Friday, 29 June 2007 13:53 (eighteen years ago)

I still want sideburns.

Masonic Boom, Friday, 29 June 2007 13:59 (eighteen years ago)

I should start saving my clippings and make facial merkins for girls.

i'm still not over "waxing and shaping" :(

g-kit, Friday, 29 June 2007 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

Had a trim at the barbers this morning. Very nice, maybe a little short, but it is much neater.
