YOU MUST KNOW *77

I knew about the red light on cars, but not the *77. It was about 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon, and Lauren was driving to visit a friend. An UNMARKED police car pulled up behind her and put his lights on.
*Lauren's parents have always told them never to pull over for an unmarked car on the side of the road, but rather to wait until they get to a gas station, etc. *

Lauren had actually listened to her parents advice, and promptly called
*77 on her cell phone to tell the police dispatcher that she would not pull over right away. She proceeded to tell the dispatcher that there was an unmarked police car with a flashing red light on his rooftop behind her. The dispatcher checked to see if there were police cars where she was and there weren't, and he told her to keep driving, remain calm and that he had back up already on the way.

Ten minutes later 4 cop cars surrounded her and the unmarked car behind her. One policeman went to her side and the others surr! ounded t he car behind. They pulled the guy from the car and tackled him to the ground.
The man was a convicted rapist and wanted for other crimes.

I never knew about the *77 Cell Phone Feature, but especially for a woman alone in a car, you should not pull over for an unmarked car.
Apparently police have to respect your right to keep going to a safe & quiet; place. You obviously need to make some signals! that you acknowledge them ( i.e put on your hazard lights) or call *77 like Lauren did.

Too bad the cell phone companies don't generally give you this little bit of wonderful information.

*Speaking to a service representative at ** Bell ** Mobility confirmed that *77 was a direct link to state trooper info. So, now it's your turn to let your friends k! now abou t *77.

Send this to every woman (and person) you know; it may save a life.

(Although in some U.S. states, #77 on a cell phone will immediately connect you to that state's highway patrol, that code is not universal. Some states use #77, but others use *55, *47, or *HP, and some don't have any special code at all. Rather than frantically try to figure out which one will work in the area you're in, get around the problem by going straight to 911.)

TOMBOT, Thursday, 31 May 2007 22:14 (nineteen years ago)

best option - don't drive a car anywhere ever

Also, as per my aunt's fwds, I also know jokes about how many dogs it actually does take to change a lightbulb, and other jokes about little boys examining their testicles.

I have been feeling bummed out because of three reported rapes at the Univ. in Mass. - in the first weekend (almost two weeks ago). I'm a first responder - a counseler/advocate - and it threw me for a loop. I was an advocate three times in 96 hours.
None of the cases were "dark alley, assault" - which is statistically untrue most of the time - we all know that the highest percentage of rapes are from someone known to the survivor.
Two rapes were at fraternities. And, I ALWAYS want to give folks a break on the stereotypes. BUT - fuck that.
Can I just mention that two of the women who were raped at a Frat are 17 and 18 years old? And they were raped within 48 hours of stepping foot on campus? For THEIR Freshman year?

I just need to share this. *77 is so important.

Thanks, Alison

Milli Vanilli is connected with no other pop phenomena so much as Legend of Zelda and Bionic Commando, due to my misspent(?) summer of '89 listening to the local Top 40 station and playing NES for 8+ hours a day

oh wait, also, Clash at Demonhead and Faxanadu. I loved RPGs even then.

While our mulleted hero and player avatar was depicted as such on the box cover:

the reality turned out to be somewhat disappointing, as per usual:

The two women had different experiences - it's likely that they were slipped some roofies.
The older one (18 - "older" ha ha) seemed to know that she was drugged. The penetration part is always pretty clear. You don't wake up feeling like you HAVEN't had sex. I think she had sex before - and in a way the violation is different when you have a partner.

Anyway, it may sound ridiculous, but I love you guys *(and gals).

I like knowing that you're there when stu[id stuff happens, and when I'm helping survivors.
