the most twee show ever?

Nevertheless, I have been enjoying its early run very much, and it has been picked up for a full 22 episode season.

any thoughts?

(I suspect this show will be a polarizing force here, even moreso than most other topics.)

Simon H., Sunday, 28 October 2007 03:31 (eighteen years ago)

I've seen one episode in its entirety and liked it.

The colors are very bright and fun, a la Amelie and some other things Jeunet. Also, I'm missing shows about death since Six Feet Under went off the air.

Twee? Maybe. Whimsy, definitely.

molly mummenschanz, Sunday, 28 October 2007 05:16 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't seen it but lots of people I trust seem to like it, weirdly enough. From the two minutes of previews I've seen though it looks like the bastard child of Amelie and Tim Burton. And no, this is not a good thing.

But I'm still somewhat interested because besides House, TV is fucking dire right now... so you guys who like it, convince me.

Roz, Sunday, 28 October 2007 05:29 (eighteen years ago)

Wasn't there a thread recently asking if twee would catch on in America or something? I guess this show would suffice as a litmus test.

I'm undecided as to whether I like the show. The two leads strangely remind me of a dour Nicolas Cage and Wendie Malick from Just Shoot Me. And the narrating is a bit OTT at times.

I was thinking this might be my favorite new show of the year, but I've ended up enjoying Damian Lewis' zen cop show Life much more (not that they are similar at all).

Michael F Gill, Sunday, 28 October 2007 06:17 (eighteen years ago)

I couldn't make it through the second episode, even with whatsherface doing a fine Zooey Deschanel impression.

milo z, Sunday, 28 October 2007 06:57 (eighteen years ago)

second episode kind of sucked, third one was much better and almost seemed like it shoudl have been the second one. haven't watched the fourth one yet, but it seems like the ones written by bryan fuller (the creator) are excellent, maybe it'll be hard for other writers to nail the balance in tone.

anyway, yeah, I like it; I also like 'dirty sexy money' but i think I like that more for the cast than the show itself, which maybe isn't so great.

akm, Sunday, 28 October 2007 13:24 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, third episode was definitely way better than the second and made me feel like maybe this thing could have legs beyond getting old after half a season. Definitely my favorite new show of the season, but what does that even mean, just that it's better than The Big Bang Theory?

I gave up on Dirty Sexy Money after 2 episodes, I don't even like the cast that much aside from Krause/Sutherland.

Alex in Baltimore, Sunday, 28 October 2007 13:35 (eighteen years ago)

this is like the third current US series with a british actor doing an american accent (the others being house and that terrible vampire show Moonlight)

akm, Sunday, 28 October 2007 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

hey, Bionic Woman's lead is British too. and Moonlight's other lead is Australian! had no idea Anna Friel was, could've fooled me.

Alex in Baltimore, Sunday, 28 October 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

and Damian Lewis is British too.

Michael F Gill, Sunday, 28 October 2007 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

And Chuck on Gossip Girl (I shouldn't know this).

Melissa W, Sunday, 28 October 2007 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

maybe all actors are really british

akm, Sunday, 28 October 2007 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

oh yeah bionic slater, when will that get cancelled I wonder?

akm, Sunday, 28 October 2007 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

in many ways i like this show but it makes me so sad!

rrrobyn, Sunday, 4 November 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

also the cuteness aggravates, but i think they're aware of that and the utter sadness of the touchless relationship maybe balances it out

rrrobyn, Sunday, 4 November 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

five months pass...

The first episode played on ITV1 on Saturday.

Quite good, reasonably funny and even Anna Friel wasn't too irritating. I'm not quite sure how they'll manage to spin it out into a whole series though.

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 14 April 2008 13:26 (eighteen years ago)

was surprisingly not terrible. but, as they pointed out on newsnight review, the voiceover is terrible, almost like subtitles for the blind.

koogs, Monday, 14 April 2008 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

the voiceover is funny sometimes though

akm, Monday, 14 April 2008 14:21 (eighteen years ago)

watched it, didn't hate it, glad that it's actually more Lemony Snicket than Amelie. Still... not particular interested in following it anymore. I think i'm just very bothered by the bits where it all gets a bit much. like synchronized swimming musical sequences.

Roz, Monday, 14 April 2008 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

I watched the Sunday afternoon rerun with the sound down and it was much better!

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 14 April 2008 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

i was expected a 'would so run up on anna friel' post at some point, but not from dingbod i must say.

banriquit, Monday, 14 April 2008 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

banriquit, Monday, 14 April 2008 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

hey you guys, we're not getting episode 2 because ITV are morons.

ailsa, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

that was the one with the crazy daisy cars, and showed exactly why ABC slashed the budget and told barry sonnenfeld to reign it in.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 18:20 (eighteen years ago)

It's interesting and I like the premise. It's all a bit cold, though. Friel's character seems pretty stock 'cute n kooky girl' (who, by the way, didn't seem bothered AT ALL that her loved ones thought she was dead when she wasn't).

chap, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 18:28 (eighteen years ago)

It's a very good show. I'll admit though, I was one of those people who was hopelessly drawn into its preciousness and morbidity from the start. It stays pretty consistently high quality, IMO. I can't think of any other new show ballpark hits this year (aside from the woefully-canceled Journeyman, but don't get me started on that).

(...yeah, I love Anna Friel. So what.)

Nhex, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

Aye, I liked Journeyman as well, but seriously, America, don't you have any actors of your own? I think everything American series I watch/have watched has a British person being an American in it.

ailsa, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

um, *every* American series.

ailsa, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 18:47 (eighteen years ago)

i have torrented the missing ep 2. i rather liked the first one, i must admit. and i really tried very hard not to.

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

so apparently it's coming back in the fall but no new post-strike episodes until then. I hope they rerun those first 9 episodes or release a DVD between now and September or I'm gonna have completely forgotten it by then.

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

but seriously, America, don't you have any actors of your own?

Seriously, I know. Especially this past year, with Journeyman, Pushing Daisies, Bionic Woman, Sarah Connor Chronicles, and Damages (and probably a few I'm forgetting) all casting non-American leads as American characters. There's got to be some reason for this, since obviously there's never a shortage of locals looking for work.

Nhex, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 20:03 (eighteen years ago)

This show's creator, Bryan Fuller, is obsessed with death and food. Anyone else saw his short-lived series Dead Like Me with Mandy Patinkin? About a gang of grim reapers who spend most of their free time eating in a breakfast diner. I only watched the first season but thought it was great - like Pushing Daisies' older, clinically depressed but no less wacky big brother. Also, I <3 Mandy Patinkin.

Roz, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 22:42 (eighteen years ago)

You can add House, Jericho and The Riches to TV shows with Brits playing Americans in them.

I quite liked what I saw of Dead Like Me, but kept forgetting to watch on a regular basis. Didn't realise it was the same guy, but that makes a lot of sense.

ailsa, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

I love Pushing Daisies! I mean, just for the production parts alone, it needs to be watched. What's wrong with having some Burtonesque production on network tv?

Not so much understanding the love for "Journeyman". Besides the hunky Scottish "Rome" lead sounding like he's still in Rome, the show is just stupid.
Plus, the wife in "Journeyman" is so annoying. "I can't believe you're time traveling and ruining our lives! OK, I'll go back to my high profile reporting job and rub into your brother!"

aimurchie, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 14:10 (eighteen years ago)

I hadn't made the connection with Dead Like Me, which is a show I loved (and own both seasons on dvd).
I quite liked the first episode and will keep watching for now.
However, I really don't like Kristin Chenoweth or her character, mind you I've never liked her in a single thing she's done.

treefell, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 14:21 (eighteen years ago)

journeyman is annoying because it's set in SF, but filmed elsewhere, and all of the shots of the city are hysterically wrong; the golden gate bridge looming over the financial district, etc.

akm, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

And he only time travels in SF - and they can only set the vibe by doing a ton of music from whatever era - ala "Cold Case" - so it never makes ANY SENSE!
This is implying that I want network tv to make sense.

aimurchie, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

i was expected a 'would so run up on anna friel' post at some point, but not from dingbod i must say.

What are you talking about you bangpad?

Dare you to go over to the West Wing thread and say that to Ed.

Re. Journeyman, time-travelling to and from the same place isn't a problem since it's only his time that is changing, not his location.

But Ailsa, I just wish all that time travelling would make his wife LESS, not MORE annoying. Plus, the same place that is not really SF. But Rome Scottish hottie is always nice to look at, so...

The voiceover in PD is weird, but mostly because it reminds me of the ubiquitous Walgreen's commercials.
narration is generally bothersome to ADULTS.

aimurchie, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

Do not get how Kevin McKidd is hott, he looks like Barry Robson (Celtic midfielder, not very hott). Also do not get how travelling away from fake-SF would make his wife less annoying, but whatever. I'd not be too keen on my husband disappearing off to 1972 when his dinner's on the table either, to be fair.

ailsa, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

Does Mad Men have any Brits in it, cos that >>>>> anything on this thread.

DavidM, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

six months pass...

"Where can we find these clowns?"

"Drunk in a ditch somewhere. They usually crawl in just before showtime. They travel in packs"

"Like wolves?"

"More like cigarettes"

Still love this show, though I totally forgot the final three episodes started burning off last Saturday here in the US.

Nhex, Wednesday, 3 June 2009 03:34 (seventeen years ago)

the final episode was so rushed and unsatisfying - it sucks that they never even got a full season to properly tie up all the different plotlines. :(

Roz, Wednesday, 3 June 2009 03:44 (seventeen years ago)

I just saw the first three episodes of this show. It IS the most twee thing ever. My super indie roommate was like "Why didn't anyone TELL me about this? They would've KNOWN I would've loved it!" Also, Chuck's dresses are awesome.

Maria, Wednesday, 3 June 2009 23:07 (seventeen years ago)

Was it cancelled? I didn't realize. They must have revived it because I watched the first episode of Season 2 the other night. Those colors are amazing. The script rhymes fairly often, which is fun.

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 4 June 2009 19:21 (seventeen years ago)

It was canceled at the end of the second season.

Hatfail of Hollow (Nicole), Thursday, 4 June 2009 19:39 (seventeen years ago)

Well, at least they gave it an ending of some sort, I was happy to see.

Nhex, Sunday, 14 June 2009 03:11 (seventeen years ago)

http://tv.nytimes.com/2013/04/04/arts/television/mads-mikkelsen-in-hannibal-on-nbc.html?hpw

A larger problem is that the show is neither here nor there, caught between serialized, high-concept idiosyncrasy — the specialty of its creator, Bryan Fuller (“Wonderfalls,” “Pushing Daisies”) — and the formulas of episodic crime drama. It’s set up as a particular chapter in the Lecter story, a prequel to the first novel, “Red Dragon,” which introduced him as an already convicted and imprisoned killer. (“Hannibal,” the TV series, is not to be confused with the novel and film of the same title, which take place much later in the saga.) Knowing Lecter’s future would seem to give the show an ordained path, but on the evidence of the early episodes it will travel from Point A to Point B while also trying to provide weekly mysteries. So far that means that cases are rehashed, and possible killers are kept around like spare parts.

picked this up for the first time and the debut episode SCREAMS bryan fuller through and through.
can definitely see binging through both seasons before end of february.
