John Sharkey is not having a good night.

The singer/guitarist/provocateur of punk rock noise outfit Clockcleaner is sharing a bill at the Khyber with New York City’s Bad Wizard—a band he doesn’t care for, at a club he doesn’t like. It’s cold out, and his furious playing style has caused him to throw out his shoulder again, something he fears is becoming a problem.

After his band’s set, he has a drink. As Bad Wizard begin the night’s last set, he has another.

The show wraps up and Sharkey, still in pain, does what he can to help load gear into the van. He has another drink and goes upstairs to retrieve his coat from the green room. There Sharkey finds Bad Wizard’s “fat, Mr. Kotter-looking” lead singer sitting on his coat. The singer moves when asked, but only slightly.

Suddenly “Mr. Kotter,” who hasn’t made an attempt at conversation the entire gig, lets out a hearty chuckle about the night’s payout. He and his Sweathogs: $600. Clockcleaner: considerably less.

Sharkey, outweighed and an arm short, decides throwing a punch would be less than a smart idea. So instead he takes a breath, goes downstairs and walks toward the exit. To the right of the door sits Bad Wizard’s merch table: CDs, T-shirts, stickers and vinyl all laid out carefully for consumption. It’s unmanned.

Sharkey could walk out, but he doesn’t. Instead he pulls out his penis and, in his own words, “unleashes a bladder-full of the night’s beer piss” all over their merchandise.

jordan nails it, i think -- there's SO MUCH taqueria food all over the north and west side that of course a lot of it's going to be... well... skanky. And a lot of it is for true; there's no reason to get all culturally aware and tolerant when some dude just served you a chicken neck that's kinda green in spots. Man, I've gotten so so sick eating in those "little out of the way places." Don't drink the water, as they say.

But then sometimes you get a pork taco drenched in just the EXACT right kind of orange grease... oooohhh...

i am so totally jonesing for a burrito now but i know it's going to be pouring by the time i get back to the neighborhood.

Hyde Park is surprisingly devoid of good tacos/burritos.

I've been eating at the one near Fox Valley Mall, just because I'm in 3 month training right nearby and I only get 30 min lunch. The steak tacos are passable, but everything else I've had has been...not so good. (I don't eat burritos)

The other suburban Chicago burrito chain is El Burrito Loco. Which is where I had horchata for the first time (upon G. B0gler's recommendation, I believe).

the burritos at la pasadita are just steak, cilantro, and onion. then you add either the black sauce or green sauce. the perfection lies in the simplicity.

when i lived in PHX all the taquerias were similar to Filiberto's. Minimal stuff with meat, pico de gallo, and guacamole. They were very filling and delicious. My favorite burrito in the city was a version of Filiberto's Arizona Burrito, which was steak, pico, cheese, and potatoes.

I ate at a Albertaco's when I was in Colorado, and I was pretty wtf'd by them slopping on a whole gang of guac on my carne asada tacos. No cilantro, no onions, no salsa, just meat and tons of guac.

I love hitting the random small towns in central Washington State that are now heavily Mexican - lots of old 50's burger joints and drive-ins are taquerias now, not to mention disproportionately huge per-capita number of taco trucks.

I've been getting tortas lately but regretting it later because I can only eat so much torta bread before I feel like I'm going to die.

So Monkeytown is reopen, which is great, but they don't apparently have live music anymore, and it's an $80 prepaid prix fixe thing by a rotating cast of chefs.

Love Taco Santana! I don't know what my Mexican friends would say about it but I like it fine.

I did go to a place in Bushwick last weekend that's like in someone's slightly improved garage space. The tortillas were handmade and fresh--my quesadilla didn't have any cheese on it actually so I'm not sure why they call it that, but it tasted awesome.
