The LA Times has a great regular feature on its website run by Larry Harnisch called The Daily Mirror which looks back at LA newspaper issues and stories from 50 to 100 years ago. And at many points it reminds you that Our Dumb Century might as well have been a formal history.

This entry covers a front page from a hundred years back, and has the phrase I've quoted as a headline near the top of the page (but it's not one of the main stories as such). (The main story, about the assassination of Durham Stevens, is of interest, as is this alternate perspective.)
