help me pick a new phone – march/april '08

i am getting rid of my 2-year-old motorola SLVR L7, which is a total hunk of crap. the camera broke within a month of purchase and the interface went sluggish and laggy three weeks after the phone left the store. and that was almost two years ago.

for this reason, i am really not considering anything made by motorola.

i would like to keep the purchase price under $150, after rebates (i will be staying with at&t), and ideally i would like something with a handset and decent email-checking capabilities. iphones are out of my price range.

here are the at&t offerings

the rest of the world isn't either apparently

given that their phones are apparently assembled by sublingual children, this is really a good thing

the keypad on the pearl is intimidating to me, but apparently the nipple-pointer on the curve is very fragile?

remy bean, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

i like the look of the Sony Ericsson W580i Walkman, too.

remy bean, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

samsung a727

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

oh wait you want e-mail. blackjack or a blackberry then

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 18:59 (eighteen years ago)

Naw, I whale on all my stuff and the Curve is fine. I don't like those twofer keypads on the Pearl.

I had a Blackjack for a year and it is a total piece of shit when it comes to email.

My friend has a sidekick and had to have me use my computer to make a * sound to navigate a help line

sidekicks are silly looking. tend to like phones without flippy shit, and the amount of breakable plastic parts in those sidekicks is alarming to me.

remy bean, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

phone without flippy shit are the way forward

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

Blackberry Curve or 8800. I have a curve and it is the business for email and has a pretty decentbattery life compared my previous 8700. Seems to be pretty solid although the web browser is pretty shit. I've never got Opera working with it (network restrictions with Vodafone I think). Even the GPS is fairly non- shit.

Ed, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

I like how the sidekick moves when you flip it open. Dialing it is kinda lol tho

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

The camera is decent too.

felicity, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

The Walkman phones are awesome. The camera is actually totally usable (as long as you are in a well-lit area), the music player is nice (and you can boot it into music-only mode, which is good on the plane), and the new one has support for bluetooth audio. I have the W810i, and I love it. There is a gmail app that works well, and you can check your email using WAP (with a little set-up). I also tether it to my laptops via usb/bluetooth, and use it as a wireless modem when I don't have wifi access. Not a good phone for typing email, but checking works fine.

schwantz, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

I meant "you can check your mail using IMAP" not WAP. And POP too, but IMAP is nice...

schwantz, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 23:05 (eighteen years ago)

If you want a phone under $150, are you going to be able to afford a plan with a data rate that allows email access?

libcrypt, Thursday, 27 March 2008 02:37 (eighteen years ago)

Ok, I want a no-frills phone that works well and is slim (sick of having fat pockets). And I use Verizon.

Hurting 2, Thursday, 27 March 2008 02:43 (eighteen years ago)

RAZR?

libcrypt, Thursday, 27 March 2008 02:45 (eighteen years ago)

quit using verizon.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 27 March 2008 07:01 (eighteen years ago)

one month passes...

eesh this decision seems far too difficult right now... mostly requires knowing what one wants out of a phone and service - like really knowing. but i change my mind constantly. and canada is kinda behind in its service offerings and costs, ugh.

as of right now i just need something basic, but not nec bare bones. though many people i know swear by blackberry. which i could buy outright for a decent price from a store/3rd party, and then subscribe to a carrier afterwards w/o a 1+ year contract, just pay for plan month to month - i have been told.

i take pretty good care of things - it takes years for any of my electronics to break/malfunction - so wld prob get money's worth out of spending $230 on unlocked blackberry pearl, for instance.

talking it out

rrrobyn, Sunday, 4 May 2008 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

my dilemma right now is btwn whether to go with a provider that has cheap & decent & simple service that only offers meh phones (KRZR K1, m0torola W384, samsng u410)
or go with provider that lets me use a better phone on it tho with slightly expensive (and confusing in amt of options) service

rrrobyn, Sunday, 4 May 2008 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

Blackberry Pearl is a great phone but only get it if you are really going to get a lot of value out of mobile email.

Ed, Sunday, 4 May 2008 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i seem to have good luck with midrange electronics & computers in general, nothing super flashy but not fall-apart crap either - i mean i assume this is the average user stuff anyway. i just reallly don't want terrible sound quality, which i guess is maybe asking a lot? and depends on network too, i guess

might just go for a newish sony ericsson

(oh up there it's not m0torola W384 but W385 uh)

My friend has a sidekick and had to have me use my computer to make a * sound to navigate a help line

I think I speak a different language -errr I think I do actually - cause I rrreally don't understand this.

stevienixed, Sunday, 4 May 2008 21:12 (eighteen years ago)

rrrobyn, dont get a blackberry.

i wonder which phone remy got.

also, fwiw both of my sidekicks were treated terribly and nothing ever broke or fell off.

sunny successor, Monday, 5 May 2008 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

so yesterday i got a cellular telephone device!!
it is super basic (mot0rola w385, grey, nothing fancy at all - really good sound though!) as is the service (but lots of free talk time and unlimited txting, no blargh contract), but that's all i need right now and monthly cost is cheap. still makes me feel all high on technology yaay!

haha my brother with his blackberry is all into sending multiparagraph semi-correctly spelled and punctuated texts to me which get all truncated and i'm like gar dude i have the internet at work and home just send me an email. whereas my other brother with simple phone & plan sends a bunch of 2-line msgs in total txt speak. i am somewhere in the middle.

anyway, i'll probably have an iphone within the next 2 years just like evryone else rite
