El Tomboto, Thursday, 27 March 2008 06:56 (eighteen years ago)

kingfish, Thursday, 27 March 2008 07:00 (eighteen years ago)

RIP big man

gr8080, Thursday, 27 March 2008 08:28 (eighteen years ago)

"Can you say 'Egg McMuffin'?" "Egga Muffin."

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Thursday, 27 March 2008 09:21 (eighteen years ago)

dude lived to be 89. Clearly he didn't consume his invention on a regular basis.

Super Cub, Thursday, 27 March 2008 09:22 (eighteen years ago)

Or he invented it late in life.

Mark G, Thursday, 27 March 2008 09:44 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not sure how you can "invent" the idea of egg, cheese and ham on an English muffin, but whatever.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 27 March 2008 11:19 (eighteen years ago)

he invented its remix

blueski, Thursday, 27 March 2008 11:22 (eighteen years ago)

Dude I don't have time for this manufactured, cheesy breakfast food...

...wait a minute, it's great!

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 27 March 2008 11:24 (eighteen years ago)

don't think i ever bought one of these, just the big breakfast a few times

blueski, Thursday, 27 March 2008 11:26 (eighteen years ago)

The Big Breakfast is just a sausage and egg McMuffin separated out, with the egg scrambled.

Matt DC, Thursday, 27 March 2008 11:27 (eighteen years ago)

no cheese or ham tho - a world of difference

blueski, Thursday, 27 March 2008 11:30 (eighteen years ago)

Ah, but the Hotcakez/Pancakes and Sausage tho...

Mark G, Thursday, 27 March 2008 11:35 (eighteen years ago)

No ham? What do you call Richard Bacon then?

xpost

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 27 March 2008 11:35 (eighteen years ago)

This is the only McDonald's food item I will stick up for.

Melissa W, Thursday, 27 March 2008 11:35 (eighteen years ago)

"No ham? What do you call Richard Bacon then?"

a useless prick?

Frogman Henry, Thursday, 27 March 2008 11:38 (eighteen years ago)

You could just go to a cash machine you know.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 27 March 2008 11:39 (eighteen years ago)

Snap. Also in Britain the Sausage and Egg McMuffin is pretty much the only place to get sausage in PATTY form (square sausage is a completely different piggy-flavoured beast BTW, Scots, don't even go there).

suzy, Thursday, 27 March 2008 11:41 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think I can bring myself to get my spicy breakfast sausage fix from McDonald's, sorry dead McMuffin dude.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 27 March 2008 11:42 (eighteen years ago)

That's okay Tracer, I thought they were shite too.

Dead McMuffin Dude, Thursday, 27 March 2008 11:45 (eighteen years ago)

Also in Britain the Sausage and Egg McMuffin is pretty much the only place to get sausage in PATTY form

i suspect that Poland would cater for yr suasage needs just fine, Suzy. a large helping of kielbasy virtually doubled the weight of my suitcase on the way home from Gdansk yesterday cf flying out. (I am not joking).

Grandpont Genie, Thursday, 27 March 2008 11:54 (eighteen years ago)

POLSKA KIELBASA! That's what my mom puts in her sauerkraut and potatoes, as directed by her late Polish grandmother who owned a tavern.

Now that their eggs are free range I don't feel quite so bad about eating the occasional McMuffin, because sometimes there's just a place for plasticky cheese slices, and this usage and a proper American diner cheeseburger are those two places. The sausage in them is herby, not spicy as such.

I have been known to remove Cumberlands or Lincolnshires from their casings to make sausage patties for boutique version of the McMuffin, which features posh cheese and a more gently cooked egg.

suzy, Thursday, 27 March 2008 11:59 (eighteen years ago)

He just some sad-ass down at the basement of McDonalds, thinkin up some shit to make some money for the real players.

Hurting 2, Thursday, 27 March 2008 12:23 (eighteen years ago)

Bacon Egg Cheese BISCUIT pwns the McMuffin, I'm afraid </Shakey>

G00blar, Thursday, 27 March 2008 12:41 (eighteen years ago)

Big fluffy biscuits better than English muffins shocker.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 27 March 2008 12:43 (eighteen years ago)

WTF is this biscuit of which you speak?

Matt DC, Thursday, 27 March 2008 12:44 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry, only found in America (it's the biscuit of the American south, not a McVities-type biscuit).

G00blar, Thursday, 27 March 2008 12:45 (eighteen years ago)

omg @ this thread

The true shame of Britain is that UK KFC doesn't SERVE BISCUITS. That's like the main reason to go to KFC in the first place.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 27 March 2008 12:48 (eighteen years ago)

^^^I have thought this exact thought many a time^^^

G00blar, Thursday, 27 March 2008 12:49 (eighteen years ago)

I still ask, even though I know what the answer's going to be. It's this stubborn thing. Like being in a British Subway and asking for oil and vinegar. I know what's going to happen but I can't help myself.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 27 March 2008 12:52 (eighteen years ago)

Ha Tracer I can't believe after McD's criticism you admit patronage of Subway. Ewwwwwwww.

suzy, Thursday, 27 March 2008 13:07 (eighteen years ago)

Yes I have been known to "eat fresh" from time to time.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 27 March 2008 13:16 (eighteen years ago)

I second Suzy's Ewwwwwwww. I had an egg sub from Subway somewhere in Canada (White River, possibly, or Sault Ste Marie) and it was one of the worst things I have ever tasted. there are now, some seven years later, at least three Subways in Oxford, two of which are less than 500 metres from each other, which is nuts, but i will never darken their doors.

Grandpont Genie, Thursday, 27 March 2008 13:16 (eighteen years ago)

what exactly is fresh about it? if what i ate was representative then it is one of the most processed things evah!

Grandpont Genie, Thursday, 27 March 2008 13:17 (eighteen years ago)

They used to! Back in 1990, when I met Dawn, she'd usually get one when we went.

Mark G, Thursday, 27 March 2008 13:21 (eighteen years ago)

because the put stuff in bread in the shop its apparently "fresh"

Jarlrmai, Thursday, 27 March 2008 13:22 (eighteen years ago)

i bought one of these this morning. you know why?

it was outta -respect-.

deeznuts, Thursday, 27 March 2008 14:58 (eighteen years ago)

My mom used to throw some eggs and cheese on an English muffin and tell us we were having "Egg McMuffins" for dinner, and I always got annoyed and said "they're not Egg McMuffins if they're not from McDonald's!" (The copy editor as a young boy.)

jaymc, Thursday, 27 March 2008 15:04 (eighteen years ago)

"Mom, I allegedly hit my brother."

Hurting 2, Thursday, 27 March 2008 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

Did you press it against your heart and eat it standing up? (xxpost)

Mom's best efforts falling victim to the insidious disease of brand loyalty.

B.L.A.M., Thursday, 27 March 2008 20:14 (eighteen years ago)

I don't even think that was it, it was more like I was railing against the use of McMuffin as a generic term like kleenex or xerox.

jaymc, Thursday, 27 March 2008 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

Oh I would have definitely called forgery on that shit. I wouldn't mind if my mom did that but I'd say it wasn't a proper facsimile without the bacon/ham/sausage patty.

Cannot wait for my new stove/hob to arrive, as I'm 100 yards from a proper butcher (French blackleg chickens, great lamb, own-recipe sausages) that supplies some of the best restaurants in London and also sells the free range eggs. I will be providing McFacsimiles from 10.30am daily for self and any others.

suzy, Thursday, 27 March 2008 20:21 (eighteen years ago)

C'mon even as a kid I knew sharp farm cheddar at home was better than that orange plastic shit. I used to ruin mini-Tupperware making scram eggs in the MICROWAVE so they kept the round shape.

Laurel, Thursday, 27 March 2008 20:25 (eighteen years ago)

the achewood cookbook has a great way of doing the egg mcmuffin microwave egg patty thing in it, using a real egg. I need to get another copy of that thing

El Tomboto, Thursday, 27 March 2008 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

I used real eggs, too. They puff up in the micro naturally, I think? I'm sure there are finer points that'll make them less rubbery or wahtever but it was good enough.

Laurel, Thursday, 27 March 2008 20:29 (eighteen years ago)

oh man, one of my college roommates used to microwave an egg every morning and make his own mcmuffins. nuking eggs seems so rong.

Jordan, Thursday, 27 March 2008 20:31 (eighteen years ago)

As I said before, Kraft-type plastic cheese has two places - and two places only - in my life: on an Egg McMuffin and on a diner cheeseburger of the type I have been making for 25 years (my first job: waitress/short order cook at drugstore soda fountain). Sharp cheddar is better for the interior of a Juicy Lucy for sure, or in a patty melt. I defy any grill jockey on ILX to best me at burgers.

Having lived with a microwave as my only source of food heating for the past two months, YUCK to the idea of eggs cooked in one. I need the taste of butter that has been melted in a saucepan underneath those scrambled eggs.

suzy, Thursday, 27 March 2008 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

guys mcdonalds uses real eggs too

EGG MCMUFFINS ARE SO DELICIOUS!

gr8080, Thursday, 27 March 2008 20:59 (eighteen years ago)

In Britain they use free range eggs, in fact.

suzy, Thursday, 27 March 2008 20:59 (eighteen years ago)

1) Call me!
2) Where is this?

G00blar, Thursday, 27 March 2008 21:05 (eighteen years ago)

1) Get my number from Ed! Or mail me, would love to hang out.
2) Butcher on Theobald's Road next to Fryer's Delight, across from police station. Supplies Moro, Cigala and Eagle for sure, plus many others.

suzy, Thursday, 27 March 2008 21:12 (eighteen years ago)

i love egg mcmuffins. but the starbucks pepper bacon breakfast sandwich has it pwned, i'm afraid.

plasticky orange cheese SO has a place in the canon of good food.

get bent, Thursday, 27 March 2008 21:14 (eighteen years ago)

(This Starbucks sandwich you speak of: really? They make breakfast sandwiches there? And they're good? Wow).

Also, damn: Fryer's Delight mmmmm.

G00blar, Thursday, 27 March 2008 21:16 (eighteen years ago)

Do yourself a massive favour and arrange to have leftover chips from the FD on hand because they make the best home fries base in the whole world.

suzy, Thursday, 27 March 2008 21:19 (eighteen years ago)

xpost

they are good. unlike the mcmuffin, sbux serves its sandwich piping hot.

get bent, Thursday, 27 March 2008 21:20 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, like I can order fish and chips and leave with some left over.

G00blar, Thursday, 27 March 2008 21:24 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i had no idea starbucks did breakfast sandwiches either, that isnt normal is it? i thought the only food you can buy from this is typically on display in the counter.

deeznuts, Thursday, 27 March 2008 21:25 (eighteen years ago)

I don't go to Starbucks, hate the coffee. In UK this breakfast sandwich must not be around otherwise the britishers would be OMG BACONS.

The large chips is the size of a man's head. You should be able to control y'self.

Gotta love the Fryer's Delight, though. I don't think am imagining there are always at least two black cabs parked outside. The other day I went over there and got just a piece of fried fish, then made about four filet-o-fish facsimiles and SNARFED them in about five minutes.

suzy, Thursday, 27 March 2008 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

ah shit

get bent, Thursday, 27 March 2008 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

xpost I love it. My friend's godfather owns the place--when my Glasgow-born grandfather came to London we took he and my grandmother there, and asked my friend to see if she could get my grandparents 'special treatment'. The owner guy was totally nice, but he was also like: 'It's a chip shop. What am I gonna do?'. He did offer a very special personal welcome to my grandparents when we walked in.

G00blar, Thursday, 27 March 2008 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

Serving sandwiches got in the way of employees' “ability to make the perfect shot of espresso.”

Serving sandwiches starbucks' lousy coffee got in the way of employees' “ability to make the perfect shot of espresso.”

get bent, Thursday, 27 March 2008 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

Probably some ridiculous 2000 per cent markup not possible on ye olde breakfast sanger, just guessin'.

suzy, Thursday, 27 March 2008 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

sausage eggmcmuffin ftw although my puckering arteries tell me no.

csa, Thursday, 27 March 2008 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

"Can you say 'Egg McMuffin'?" "Egga Muffin."

I was going to post this! Rodney Allen Rippey forever.

nickn, Friday, 28 March 2008 00:57 (eighteen years ago)

get bent off the mark.

gr8080, Friday, 28 March 2008 03:06 (eighteen years ago)

i love egg mcmuffins.
they are totally awesome, but i hate mcdonalds for not serving them after 11 am.
2 for $3!!! with hash browns!! and OJ!!!

ian, Friday, 28 March 2008 03:21 (eighteen years ago)

Sad there's a missed opportunity for an ironic death... like high cholesterol or being crushed by a falling ton of frozen McMuffins.

Sorry to get all Shakey Mo but it was a bit of a laff when the dude who invented the 'I'm Loving It' ad campaign topped himself.

Also Hungry Jacks (Burger King) has just introduced a breakfast range and sells Egg Muffins (no 'Mc' obvs) that taste EXACTLY the fucking same. What's this world coming to?

S-, Friday, 28 March 2008 05:14 (eighteen years ago)

ian otm.

gr8080, Friday, 28 March 2008 17:41 (eighteen years ago)

ha wasn't there a thread with some tiny AP story that mcd's was considering serving breakfast 24/7?? iirc ilx flipped out like jesus had proclaimed every day blowjob day or something

gff, Friday, 28 March 2008 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

that would be the greatest ever.
