does anybody else notice this word popping up more and more these days? has william safire written a column about it yet?
― s1ocki, Friday, 28 March 2008 14:51 (eighteen years ago)
he used it in a column back in November
My copy editor and the traditionally out-of-control art department have been tasked to illustrate this point by ripping some words out of this item and highlighting them in an inset of larger type. The writer never knows what their selection and placement will be; you and I, dear reader, will see it first when we pick up the paper.

― Roz, Friday, 28 March 2008 14:57 (eighteen years ago)
u got tasked
― Jordan, Friday, 28 March 2008 14:58 (eighteen years ago)
Surely it's a typoon for "asked"?
― Masonic Boom, Friday, 28 March 2008 14:59 (eighteen years ago)
the NYT does not make typos. ever.
― Mr. Que, Friday, 28 March 2008 14:59 (eighteen years ago)
to me it seems like a way to incorporate military jargon into your writing to sound more authoritative/in-the-know/douchey.
― s1ocki, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:09 (eighteen years ago)
"officed"?
― Bonita Applebum, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:10 (eighteen years ago)
nothing can touch news use of 'surge' (as in 'obama is surging in the polls') in the last year.
― banriquit, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:11 (eighteen years ago)
also it sounds cooler to say "i've been tasked to blah blah blah" than "my boss told me to blah blah blah."
i've been tasked to refill our coffee reserves.
― s1ocki, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:14 (eighteen years ago)
"Tasked" has surely been around for a long time, hasn't it?
― Zelda Zonk, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:16 (eighteen years ago)
I still refuse to believe this is a real word.
Then again, I still have problems with "source" as a verb.
― Masonic Boom, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:16 (eighteen years ago)
I have only heard tasked couple with "with."
― Jesse, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:16 (eighteen years ago)
As in "charged with."
I prefer "faced"
― dan m, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:17 (eighteen years ago)
sounds like a two-man assignment to me
― blueski, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:18 (eighteen years ago)
that's what she said
― s1ocki, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:21 (eighteen years ago)
I've been tasked It's a big ask Key to my job description Is the use of linguistic affliction Euphony not substance is corporate mellifluity I think we will just park that one For now
― Grandpont Genie, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:21 (eighteen years ago)
pls do not quote radiohead lyrics on this thread
― Mr. Que, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:22 (eighteen years ago)
I did not like tasked or officed to begin with but I am a big fan of using the least amount of words as possible. Still I'm more likely to use the latter than the former. "Officed" is like "housed" which is a legitimate word.
― Bonita Applebum, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:23 (eighteen years ago)
"shacked"

― Mr. Que, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:26 (eighteen years ago)
The phrase I am currently hating more than any other is "Person Specification".
Whatever happened to "job description"?
Headhunters no longer try to suit the job to the person, but now the person has to be suited to the job.
― Masonic Boom, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:28 (eighteen years ago)
this is like 'whats the deal with airline food' stuff at this point but i really hate when big box stores refer to employees as 'partners' or whatever. i was at ikea the other day and this sign said if i had any questions to ask a 'co-worker' wtf???
― and what, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:30 (eighteen years ago)
maybe that sign was aimed at ikea workers haha
