So I've the 0x00000024 BSOD and every board on the internet says run chkdsk. But how can I run chkdsk if I can't get to the 'start'?

tbh I don't even know how i got to the bsod.

Computers can be so depressing.

F8 at boot, then safe mode or whatever. If you can't get that far, download a bootdisk.

I tried safe mode but just came back to this screen telling me to shut down the pc. This all startde because I tried to install a vista service pack. Damn I should have stayed with macs.

And I still don't know how I actually got to tht bsod. Crap.

wait it's vista?

Jarlrmai, Sunday, 25 May 2008 22:46 (eighteen years ago)

you can run safe mode command line only and run a chkdsk from there

Jarlrmai, Sunday, 25 May 2008 22:47 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, vista. When I try and run safe mode - it just scrolls through a load of commands and then goes to a 'windows error recovery' screen, with 2 options. One for repair and the other to start windows normally, both lead my back to "the installed program cannot start. click ok to turn off the computer."

I'm screwed aren't I?

Ned Trifle II, Sunday, 25 May 2008 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

yes

Jarlrmai, Sunday, 25 May 2008 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

you could try booting from the vista install disk if you ave one and try repairing from there?

ave you tried Safe mode with command prompt?

boot from the OS CD and run chkdsk from recovery console. or boot from linux or a bootdisk.com file or whatever. you might have to go into your computer's bios settings to do this.

or put the hd in another computer and run chkdsk on it there

Kinda doubt the problem will be solved with chkdsk. Boot from the install CD and reinstall the OS. You'll lose some of yr settings, but yr data should remain intact if you don't choose a wipe-first install.

0x00000024 is an NTFS problem, so a chkdsk may fix.

Booting to Linux will no work as it's NTFS

Booting from the Vista disk and trying is your best bet.

NTFS is like the worst filesystem ever. Security holes, fragmentation, ghost files, BSODs, blah blah blah.

CHKDSK /F
