=============================================== Yesterday Jimmy Savile accused Baron Cohen of basing Ali G on him: "He's made a fortune out of me," he said. "If I wasn't here he would be skint. Ali G wears tracksuits and bulky jewellery like I started doing on the telly in 1961. He must go to the charity shops I give my old tracksuits to."

Which at least made me smile. What are the chances this will happen watching the film? (I did laugh at one trailer, but a WHOLE FILM?)
So Ali G, milking-it like nobody ever has? is he some kind of racist? bored already? (DG, don't read this)

I do seem to remember my friend Andrew (who is now Kevin Lygo's deputy at C5, but devised Ali G with Sacha Baron-Cohen when working at TalkBack on 11o'C show) saying they'd based him on a) 'wiggas' and b) Armand van Helden. But Ed is right - both Andrew and Sacha went to posh private schools (A, St Pauls Boys; Sacha, Haberdashers') on the outskirts of London - and there are tons of these boys Keeping It Real there, innit?

eg curtis walker (black uk comedian) denounces him (as quoted in Rap Alerts) for "stupid sterotypes" of black foax, and jimmy saville says it's HIM!!
For those unaware of JS's work, this is like someone being denounced for "insulting the entire Chinese race" with his impressions AND (simultaneously) for ripping his style off Dick Clark.

I agree with Curtis Walker that the film could have a stereotyping effect, - but I think (and this applies equally to gangsta rap in the U.S.) this is more the fault of those who would promote a sometimes dumb, sometimes criminal subculture as 'black culture,' thereby removing it from fair criticism which is seen as being by definition racist, and causing other blacks to feel pressured to conform to ‘their’ culture.

So what am I saying? That he should be un-subtle, brutally moralising? Yes. I like that stuff. I liked it when he made the Cambridge don cough up that he didn't think women were intelligent. I don't like it when he has his guests introduced by black women in leotards. Sometimes he gets it wrong, as far as I'm concerned. Perhaps it's just that sometimes he doesn't go far enough. If he had his guests introduced kicking naked black women who crawled along the floor, maybe that would work. But TV just isn't radical enough for that level of satire. So my idea would be, don't go there. Don't do watered down stuff.

Oh alright, not exactly non-stop, but actually more than at The R**** T****b***s. I hope it does well in the US for some reason.
