Ro-Busters

It was a fairly dull Starlord/2000AD story about a robot disaster squad, which only really picked up when they flashed back to war-droid Hammerstein's memoirs of fighting his way across Europe in the Third World War, laying the foundations for the ABC Warriors.

The story where the demolition robots laid into Oldham was quite good too.

Big Jobs.

The Fall and Rise of Ro Jaws and Hammerstein rules!

Much of what Mills would do in early Nemesis can be seen in this story, and it's beauitfully drawn (well, the Kevin O'Neill bits are anyway). Bloody stunning. There's some gorgeous Mick McMahon artwork in it as well.

And it's funny.

Hammerstein's War memoirs rock also - Hammerstein: "I guess I did somethings I wasn't proud of..." Mek Quake: "Mek Quake would like to hear these things you weren't proud of Hammmerstein... IN DETAIL!"

and it wasn't Oldham. It was Northpool.

Dirty stinkin' Volgs!

misterjones, Friday, 22 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Early attempts at 2000AD continuity - The kid from Hammerstein's platoon in Europe wants to return to the states to help build Mega City One. (Early 21st Century) The Volgan War is the pretext behind 'Invasion' (Late 1990's). ABC Warriors - The Martian stuff (close your eyes darling, it will all be over in a second... AARGHHHH!) is very early 21st century, before RO Busters. Obviously Nemesis et al share a universe with The RO Busters, but in the very distant future. Satanus eats a Judge in Nemesis book 4 - further evidence that Dredd shares a timestream with the rest of the gang.

I'd like to add that I have a life these days, thanks.

and to confuse us more, the tharg/editorial stories would feature mek- quake, so it was ALL REAL! God those stories were lame. Thrill- suckers etc, those gits on the cube-shaped planet etc. urg.

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 22 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

didn't a jobbing Alan Moore write a couple of tharg stories? Or am I hopelessly off the mark.

misterjones, Friday, 22 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There was the Tharg time-twister where they visited the "Big Clock" which was crammed with half-puns about "salad days" and "golden memories" which were lying around in sacks. that sounds Moore-ish (ahem).

Wasn't that story with the clock was drawn by Eric Bradbury, one of my favourite 2000AD artists, who was probably the best artist at depicting the Dictators of Zrag? The foreman looks at the salad days and says "Eh up. There's slugs in that! I'll better have a word!"

But the best bit of that story is the part where it says "it is sometimes said that when the clock chimed for the first time, space and time came into being as a result. This is known as the BIG BONG theory!"

Does anybody remember the Thunderbirds piss-take Robusters story which appeared in the 1984 2000AD annual? It's brilliant. Stormeagles are go!

Mister Jones, even I am frightened by your 2000AD knowledge.

DV, Friday, 22 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes. fear my 2000AD knowledge. It is mighty.
