Worst safe sex slogan ever

Just appeared on the radio:

"Girls like it when boys carry condoms. It shows you care about how she feels too."

Then it goes off into the standard "if you are under 18 and want more information on safer sex etc etc"

But are we now raising a whole generation to think of the practical as romantic? Why not just simplify to "condoms: chicks dig them"? Jesus.

Okay, I do accept a 'whatever it takes' approach may be necessary, but still.

Carrying condoms around, especially on a date w/someone you've done done it with yet, seems presumptuous, like "yeah baby I'd knew we'd get around to this sooner or later haw haw"... plus there's the disappointment of taking it out of your pocket and putting it back into the medicine cabinet when the night doesn't pan out the way you want... yet being caught without is surely thee worst of these scenarios... so. Right.

which is why having cunning hidden pocket in your wallet is the best way forward, despite possible fumbling, it doesn't look too forward, yet still well prepared.

unless it has cobwebs on and is past the use-by date of course...

I didn't really mean the rights or wrongs of carrying Tracer. I think that goes without saying. But the above is a direct quote from the ad and saying a condom shows you care about her feelings ... hopefully this would take more than a condom? As it's aimed at teenagers it just smacks slightly of 'if you really loved me you'd do it.'

I could just be entering mania due to still being at work at 22;40.

Oh, bloody hell. I don't get people who have complexes about Who Carries The Jimmy Hats as long as *someone* does. Boys, you haven't got the inapropriate, presumptuous HORN. Girls, you will not be considered a slag unless your potential suitor is a total sexist pig, in which case, no sex for idiot boy. There is nothing more unromantic than unplanned pregnancy: FACT.

Also I am down the street from Terence Higgins Trust and they give out free ones. So the boyfriend and I take turns going in for our freebies.

I had, for ages, a Missy Elliott "Get Ur Freak On" promo item condom just waiting for use until one day when I...got my freak on.

okay Anna I see - the implication for me is "hey boys we know you hate em but DO IT FOR THE LADIES" as if guys would be chasing down every pregnancy and STD they could find if it weren't for those women and their odd requests...

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 21 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Exactly - it's just ... daft.

Anna, Thursday, 21 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've side-stepped that incisive cultural commentary thing somewhere.

In NZ when I was at school: "Gotcha cash? gotcha keys? gotcha condoms?"

Hmph, I wish I hadn't immediately thought:

'Do it! Do it! Do it in Huggies!'.

Sarah, Friday, 22 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If that's one of the set of radio adverts I'm thinking of they also have a very funny strapline:
"Sex - are you thinking about it enough".

Its like aimed at sixteen year olds. Its not possible for them to think about it more.

That said - practical is often romantic (cf bed of nails vs slumberdown).
