I guess the only real disappointment, as in something I was sure would definitely happen, was McKellen's loss, but Anthony's right, Broadbent's brilliant and a half and the recognition is well deserved. This may seem silly but I have this theory that every Oscars contains one moment (if we're lucky, two) that's real. Thru all the scripting and pancake makeup and swoopy zooming camera movements, somehow (goes the theory) someone manages to say or do something that cuts right through it all (my litmus test: I cry. yes, I told you it was silly)

Examples: Frances McDormand's speech accepting for Best Actress. Fellini accepting the lifetime achievement award in Italian and tottering to the edge of the stage and stretching his arms out wide for Giulieta whose face is bathed in tears. Roberto Begnini. Do I have a soft spot for Italians? Anyway, was there a moment like this last night? From what Anthony says maybe I think it was Mike Nichols.

The film is a long line of miscegenation dramas(sp) imbued with a racial hysteria . The fuck the hillbilly comment was meant to indicate something cast as a searing race drama was nothing more or less sophistacated then Mandigo. The screen payy and the acting become racist in themselves, with thier depections of African Americans as noble or savage but not both , and the whole impriosned angle was too simpliistic .
Race is such an ager binary in America and the culture surrounding its depctions encourage this dichotmy (sp)

The best comment I read concerning Halle Berry's Oscar was that her performance in Monsters Balls, while yes, emotional, was very over- the-top. It was though they were giving her an Oscar at the delightful discovery that she can act. The whole "well the door has been opened thanks to me" comment is a bit frustrating. I am going to put some context on the "doors are open" commentary; it was not coming from a "I am so great, look what I've done for you" standpoint. It was coming from a "I can't believe this is happening, I'm so lucky, and the best part is that it can happen again" standpoint. Halle Berry isn't the first black woman to win an Oscar, but she is the first black woman to win Best Actress. In a perfect world, this wouldn't matter; however, we live in an emphatically unperfect world and it absolutely DOES matter. The fact that there are better black actresses out there is completely irrelevant to core issue, as far as I'm concerned.

i was thinking: I wish instead of having 5 Best Picture nominees or 10 Best Picture nominees, it was just open-ended and they nominated however many movies they thought were worthy of consideration. if done correctly, it would make "just being nominated was an honor" less of a meaningless cliche.

Enjoying Steve Pond's The Big Show, which follows the Academy Award broadcasts from 1994 to 2004. I thought I was starting a history of the enterprise (you get that in the first chapter), but it only covers that time frame, and the primary focus are the broadcasts more than the actual awards. A gossipy, basically meaningless subject treated soberly--often my favourite kind of book.

The Disney-owned Alphabet Network will continue to air the Oscars — long the world’s most watched awards telecast — through the 100th edition of the awards show in 2028. After that, the ceremony will be available live and for free to over two billion people around the world on YouTube, and to YouTube TV subscribers in the United States.

Honestly, I am OK with this, especially if it means that the show can evolve into something that doesn't have to appeal to network TV viewers or be limited by network TV constraints. My only concern is whether I will be able to sign up for a free trial of YouTube TV each year.
