A couple of years ago, I had my backpack stolen from my car. Some fucks thought there was stuff of value in it - nothing more than some stupid computer books and a couple months' worth of school notes. I know it's not the same (losing school notes ain't QUITE the same as losing a journal / scrapbook), but I can empathize with the pointlessness of it, the violation, that conflicting sense of anger and confusion, and (most importantly) the sheer stupidity of the thief to steal something that's means SO much more to you than it ever will to anyone else.
I know it's not going to be too consoling to think about it being better that your backpack got stolen instead of someone getting held up (or worse yet, hurt), but there are going to be other mini-comics and pieces of found art and letters from friends. It'll be a while before that hits home, but it's true, and it's worth remembering that.

once someone looked through my bag, found 4 newly-purchased cds, left the beach boys, left boney m, left public enemy, but stole teenage fanclub. THIEVES ARE STUPID.
