*the* voice of England's most glorious football moment. Sad news indeed, I actually met him last year coming out of White Hart Lane and he was a very nice man, full of praise for Tottenham's attacking style (he may have been watching a different game)

Sad news indeed. And the fact that he was at White Hart Lane in the first place shows that the man had true class. I particularly enjoyed his renaissance when Channel 4 started their Italian football coverage. Hearing his Sunday afternoon pre match build up was a joy.

I am very sad at the news. He had a lovely, singular voice. He sounded like a really nice* person too.

Why are you comparing me with Kenneth Wolstenholme?

N., Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think he's comparing you with nice, isn't he?

Ellie, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well I suppose so. It does seem a little gratuitous though. I seem to be omnipresent on ILE at the moment.

N., Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Your omniscie- um, omnipresence is making you an easy target. It's unfair. We should all LEAVE N. ALONE.

My [former] sociology teacher's uncle, don't you know.

Graham, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I must add my sympathy, despite him being most famous for the most awful moment in sports history.

You mean England winning and therefore getting a complex that the country *still* can't live down? I'm waiting for the annual upgrades of "Three Lions." "Sixty years of hurt..."

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We've moved on way beyond that now, Ned.

Robin Carmody, Wednesday, 27 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have my doubts...
