Taking Sides: Donald Duck or Mickey Mouse

In the left corner we have the Duck of doom, with his quirky mannerisms and quick temper, a put-upon everyman at odds with modern society. And not merely does he wear a sailor suit, but he is permanently naked from the waist down (yet curiously, whenever surprised in the bath always attempts to cover his crotch with his "hands").

In the right corner we have an anthropomorphic mouse with a squeaky voice.

new "it was Donald" answers.

DV, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I love the bit in Fantasia 2000 where Donald is herding all the animals onto Noah's Ark, and then him and a real unanthropomorphic duck encounter each other and stare confusedly at each other.

Donald RoXoR.

DV, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I can't do an impression of Mickey Mouse. Who's a cunt, btw.

Mark C, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Did anyone ever have any of those Disney Channel videos from the eighties? With Mousercise aerobics and the live-action version of Winnie the Pooh? The Donald cartoons in that were always either a) dystopian, b) psychedelic, c) nonsence or d) all three.

Donald clearly beats Mickey with a very large stick.

Tim, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Donald all the way! apparently in finland donald is much more popular than mickey. the finns are very wise.

rener, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cartoon version of Mickey: good in the early years, useless corporate logo once Walt Disney stopped doing his voice.

Cartoon version of Donald: some amusing psychotic episodes, but like all Disney characters, he can't carry a cartoon on his own. they have to drag in some peripheral characters like Chip and Dale to provide the actual jokes. ironically, Donald started out being one of these characters. the point is that, outside of their longer features, Disney characters just aren't very interesting, especially if you compare them to the great Warner Bros. cartoons of the day.

Comic book version of Donald: as drawn by Carl Barks, one of the best comic writer-artists of the century, Donald's much more interesting and almost unrecognizable as his cartoon counterpart. as a bonus, these stories introduced other great characters like Uncle Scrooge.

so, the winner is clearly Donald.

Donald = Daffy's bitch

chris, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cabbage lowers the tone once again.

To do the Donald (or even generic duck) noise, press the front of your tongue against the roof of your mouth, then force air out of your mouth via one or both cheeks. This doesn't enable you to actually make any recognisable words, but it's good fun. Apologies if everyone else knoew how to do this before, only better.

Mark C, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

no Mark, I seriously believe it, Daffy is the best cartoon duck, quitre simply hilarious for his utter pomposity, plus the version of Yesterday that was recorded with 'him' singing that Danny Baker used to play used to make me smile a hella lot.

I do Donald's voice out the side of my mouth btw.

chris, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nifty trick, Mark C. I'll make sure to bug my friends with it. :) Anybody know how Donald's voice actor was able to make words out of it?

Vinnie, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

maybe that's just the way donald's voice actor talked normally, and he could never see what people found so funny.

rener, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Donald is som much better than Mickey it isn't even funny. However, GOOFY is mah dawg, yo. This thread should be all about GOOFY.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the Donald & Daffy duet in WFRR is complete genius, yet another reason why it is the greatest film ever made (if LOTM is not).

allegedly Daffy's voice is an imitation of some executive in Warner Bros. When he saw the first Daffy Duck cartoon he exclaimed "that'th really funny! where'd you get the idea for the thcwewy voithe?"

allegedly.

In Finland Huey, Dewey, and Louie are called Hatti, Latti, and (I think) Matti.

DV, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry Dan, Donald beats Goofy. At least you can tell what animal Donald is. If I hadn't read somewhere that Goofy used to be called Dippy Dawg, I wouldn't know what the hell he was.

Vinnie, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, and WFRR = absolutely classic. I used to watch it as a kid and practically all the jokes flew over my head and I still liked it!

Vinnie, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've never understood the whole "What type of animal is Goofy?" thing. I mean, he's very obviously a dog. He and Pluto have the same head, fer crissakes.

Who's smarter: Goofy or Pluto?

Dan Perry, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He and Pluto have the same head
Walt Disney was a lazzzzy man. :) The whole Goofy-Pluto thing makes Goofy's being a dog even weirder. Why does one of them talk and walk on two legs, and the other act like a normal dog? It would have been funny if Mickey owned them both. And I have no clue who's smarter, to answer your question.

Vinnie, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's a puzzler, isn't it? I mean, Goofy can talk and wears clothes, but Pluto seems to have the whole "canny street-smarts" thing down.

I think the creation of Pluto and Goofy was specifically designed to create philosophical turmoil in the minds of young children. Further evidence of an intent to cause mental harm is the fact that Pluto is named after the Roman Lord of Hell. This is why Pluto is cool. Disney dogs are much better than the other animals, except for that awful Goof Troop nonsense.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Donald may be a bastard, but he's sometimes funny, whereas Mickey is wet and bland and boring. And while the old Floyd Gottfredson Mickey comic strips are good, the Carl Barks Donald (and Uncle Scrooge) ones are among the best comics ever. So Donald wins in two forms.

Martin Skidmore, Saturday, 30 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mickey is just the Michael Jackson of the cartoon world.

Kim, Saturday, 30 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I once heard that Donald was banned in Finland because he didn't wear any pants. Can anyone corroborate this?

I had never realized how weird this is. Perhaps there's more to Mr. Lazzzzy then I thought. And yes, Goof Troop was a travesty, just like that moronic show where Huey, Dewey, and Louie were teenagers.

Vinnie, Sunday, 31 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Donald Duck

ducklingmonster, Sunday, 31 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Donald by a light year. Hell, Donald is even a symbol of capitalist imperialism

Chris Barrus, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I had never realized how weird this is.

Don't fret -- Pluto was actually named after the planet was discovered and itself named. Still, yes, the Roman Lord of Hell.

this cannot be true. Donald is very popular in Finland.

I once asked a Finnish person about Donald Duck, and she told me that Huey Duey and Louie are called Hatti Latti and Matti in Finland. Or something like that.

Barima (Barima), Monday, 20 October 2003 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Years of loving (and ultimately losing) my Carl Barks boxset book and I had to see that. Still, no fucking way will I vote the Mouse!

"Mickey is just the Michael Jackson of the cartoon world."

Not anymore...

Still, this was slightly amusing 'cause I remember the late 80s Mickey birthday special guest starring the Disney pantheon and the casts of Family Ties and Cheers in which the magician Mickey played apprentice to in Fantasia magically causes everyone everywhere/Disneyworld/80s daytime comedy to fail to recognise him sparking off a 'worldwide search' for him, while he hit on Kirsty Alley and made Ted Danson envious and later there's a dance number where he goes "Aoowwww!" and moonwalks. It was great. Still, I can see why Mike prefers Peter Pan.

Barima (Barima), Monday, 20 October 2003 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Both of them are pretty annoying. Disney cartoons suck. The Warner Brothers 'toons, on the other hand, are one of the high points of 20th century culture.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 20 October 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

This is why I like ILX. Because I can find peeps who share my Disney hate. I only make exception for the Ducks, Gargoyles and the unbeatable 80s characters who slipped under the radar like the Wuzzles.

Barima (Barima), Monday, 20 October 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I hate Disney too. Except for all the loads of Carl Barks comics, and some of the other duck comics, and the Floyd Gottfredson strips, and quite a few of the films, especially The Jungle Book... actually, that's quite a lot really.
