Chesterfield won't get anyone, but Jamie Burt siogned a new contract extension the other day, and that's a very good thing.
― chris, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)
Apparently Howe is a good tackler, fast and can actually pass for central defender, and bring the ball out to midfield.
Have you seen hime play? He must be quality as a few years ago managed to play in England U21 team - how many players from the second division have managed that in the last decade for England U21?
― Jonnie, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)
― Martin Skidmore, Saturday, 30 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)
Our manager has gone public to say he can't find another centre half to cover for the two uninjured fellows he has at his disposal. He told the local paper that everyone he spoke to 'had better places to be'. Sigh.
Can anyone whip up any interest in this at all? Martian?

Happy days are here again...
TODAY: Pavlyuchenko AND Corluka are both Spurs-bound. Rotherham have got a lad from Athletic Bilbao on a free (no, really).

Blimey. Signing two players by 10.30 is hardly observing the grand traditions of transfer deadline day. Society is in the gutter.
I am taking this as a sign we're going to be busy endlessly niggling over Berbatov today.

I loved the look of the spurs team - some genuinely exciting players - but the russian had better revolutionise your front line cos you were hopeless against Chelsea.

Man City sell Corluka after all! Fancy that! He wasn't definitely staying! Even though they said that he was definitely staying! Wow! Anything can happen in soccerball!
In other Man City news, their long nightmare of being owned by a possibly unpleasant man ends as they are purchased by some chaps from Abu Dhabi who appear to be arms dealers, with the promise of finishing in the top four THIS SEASON~!

Considering Martin Jol refused to play Kevin Prince Boateng in any position during his tenure at White Hart Lane, signing him again for Hamburg seems odd to say the least. Still, any excuse to post this picture again:

ok man city have apparently bid 28m for berbatov. best transfer window EVER
― darraghmac, Monday, 1 September 2008 11:26 (seventeen years ago)
It does? Not sure it does for me. But it's nice to know that the Martian is always with us.
At the top of the thread people are saying 'Pity about the end of deadline day - now we have a transfer window instead'. I don't get this. Surely we didn't have a deadline day until we had a transfer window?
Is that for real about City?
― the pinefox, Monday, 1 September 2008 11:27 (seventeen years ago)
It does take a while to load, not sure why. We did have deadline day, it's just that it used to take place a lot nearer the end of the season.
Everywhere is reporting that Valencia have signed a Uruguayan lad called Nacho Gonzalez and immediately loaned him out to Newcastle.
― William Bloody Swygart, Monday, 1 September 2008 11:31 (seventeen years ago)
Oh, THAT deadline day, yes. In March.
― the pinefox, Monday, 1 September 2008 11:47 (seventeen years ago)
I think he was linked with Celtic. Actually, I think every left back in the world has been linked with Celtic. We still haven't signed one. I don't think we're going to. So all we have is an unfit left back who wants to leave and hasn't had a decent game for over a year, and a spare right-back with disintegrating irreparable cartilages who got ripped to bits by Rangers yesterday and appears to be the only cover. Oh happy days. It almost makes you want Ross Wallace to come back. (it doesn't really)
― ailsa, Monday, 1 September 2008 11:52 (seventeen years ago)
Man City bidding for Berbatov is possibly the cheekiest bid ever. That said, if Man City's new owners really are stupid enough to think he actually wants to go there, I would happily take £35m plus a missile defence system for White Hart Lane.
― Matt DC, Monday, 1 September 2008 12:19 (seventeen years ago)

I thought that said RANGERS for a minute there and was almost slightly cheered up.
― onimo, Monday, 1 September 2008 12:32 (seventeen years ago)
If berbatov is given the option of staying at spurs and reserve football on his current wage vs going to man city and playing on double the money, he'd have to consider a move.
it's only a direct choice between united and citeh if spurs decide to accept a united bid, and they'll have to beat citeh's bid by a nice fat penalty margin for that to happen.

Surely we didn't have a deadline day until we had a transfer window?
We did, but I can't remember exactly how it used to work. I think transfers could be all season up to the deadline, which was...when? March? January? Then no transfers until after end of the season? Technically there was a window of course, but it wasn't referred to as such.
Of course my memory could be playing tricks here as I'm thinking back to the 70's/80's - therefore speculation always involved the likes of Stan Bowles and Rodney Marsh.
Does anyone want Milouda or Kalou? Brentford? Workington Town? Your local pub 2nd team?

Figure that's not going to happen, so not sure why he's still there costing lots of wages when other teams want him and are willing to pay for him. I'd have him in that team just now, but then I wouldn't have sold Evander Sno or bought Glen Loovens, so what do I know? I'm not a real football person like our experts at Celtic.

Losers Nobody Chelsea
― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 1 September 2008 23:46 (seventeen years ago)
i'll take that.
no word on diarra there's always a few that were done in the last minutes but nobody will find out about til tomorrow, so i'm holding out hope til then
― darraghmac, Monday, 1 September 2008 23:54 (seventeen years ago)
Would have taken Veloso over Diarra but it looks like we'll make do with neither. We'll all be pointing and laughing at Chelsea until normal service resumes and we remember they're comfortably favourites to win the league.
I'm a bit annoyed by the Robinho deal as it means we don't get the record transfer fee. I'll be even more annoyed when Mark Hughes gets sacked in November. Although the prospect of Shaun Wright-Phillips dropping down the pecking order behind a load of ludicrously expensive wingers is amusing to say the least.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 08:43 (seventeen years ago)
Also one of the more entertaining moments that was totally overlooked in th midst of yesterday's craziness was that Portsmouth tried to sign Joey Barton. Brilliant.
Secretly quite pleased Berbatov didn't actually sign for Man City, although it must have been difficult with Fergie turning up at the airport and handcuffing himself to him.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 08:48 (seventeen years ago)
what prospect the premier league hitting united with a charge anyway? do spurs have to make a complaint?
portsmouth were going to sign barton as a replacement for diarra, when he wouldn't move the diarra deal stalled, i think.
― darraghmac, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 09:58 (seventeen years ago)
nothing says 'panic buy' like spending 15mil on a 20yo Belgian who's cup-tied in Europe. i am assuming that Everton had exactly 15mil and not a penny more and that's why they couldn't stump up a bit extra for Moutinho.
― Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 10:51 (seventeen years ago)
lol how many pissed up City fans did I have to explain to last night that no fucking way was they gonna buy Campbell for 7 mill.
― Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 10:53 (seventeen years ago)
Is Frazier Campbell actually any good then? I sort of think 'lol fifth choice Man Utd striker' but he's probably still better than Emile Heskey/Carlton Cole/whichever other loser we were trying to panic buy yesterday evening.
(Not that he'll ever play but still)
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 11:04 (seventeen years ago)
What I saw of him at the KC last season I feel like he might be good enough to make ManYoo's first team in a couple of years, maybe. Regular, like.
― Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 11:06 (seventeen years ago)
nothing says 'panic buy' like spending 15mil on a 20yo Belgian who's cup-tied in Europe.
To be fair, he had just shut down Steven Gerrard totally in a competitive fixture, and was no doubt in danger of doing it to them too and preventing them reaching the group stages of the UEFA cup. How much is that worth?
― aldo, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 11:41 (seventeen years ago)
Not a lot.
― onimo, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 11:42 (seventeen years ago)
Two home gates plus about £0.3M from UEFA, I think.
― onimo, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 11:43 (seventeen years ago)
I think that Tottenham's transfer policy has often been silly at best, and I think the team is likely to remain seriously flawed. But perhaps it would be fair to say that in one sense this is a victory for the maligned Daniel Levy. He has been criticized for his misjudgement in holding out for £30m rather than £20m from United. He has been sniped at by various other people, like Alex Ferguson. But in holding out till deadline day (and helped I suppose by City's bid) he did indeed make *over* £30m for this moody 27-year-old, and get an agreement for a highly-rated replacement striker on loan instead. Nobody thought that Levy could stare down Ferguson and United and come out the winner in any deal, but I think he has just done so.
― the pinefox, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 11:47 (seventeen years ago)
The transfer window seems like so long ago now.
I would probably give up on supporting Spurs if they became too successful.

― Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 16:39 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, I know!
― jel --, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 16:40 (seventeen years ago)
That has virtually nothing to do with Levy, and virtually everything to do with the last-minute City takeover (which there is no way Levy could have foreseen). If the bizarre events at City hadn't occurred, then United would have had the stronger bargaining position: if the deal didn't go through they could go without Berbatov and be mildly annoyed (OK, they'd sold Saha, but he was hardly going to be missed as he was only fit for two games a year), but still have a team that had just won the European Cup; Spurs, on the other hand, would have been left paying the wages of a non-playing sulky misfit and wouldn't have had any money to pay for their new Russian signing.
― Nasty, Brutish & Short, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 16:52 (seventeen years ago)
That's probably a correct assessment, but I wonder if Real Madrid might have made a firmer enquiry if it hadn't been for Man City thundering in there?
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 16:56 (seventeen years ago)
