Isit as bad as i think it may be ? Is it barouqe and camp ? Is it really sort of a noble failure ? Is it an act of Brilliance ?

anthony, Saturday, 30 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what are you talking about my dear sir?

Queen G, Saturday, 30 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A MOTHERFUCKING FILM THAT YOU IN THE LITTLE COUNTRY WOULDNT GET YET

anthony, Saturday, 30 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it has Catherine Keener in it = even if it is a pile of crap I'll be there.

Ron, Sunday, 31 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, the thing that throws me the most is the ad where they say (about Danny Devito) From the man the brought you War Of The Roses and Throw Momma From the Train...". I mean WHAT? I'm supposed to be sold by Throw Momma From The Train?

Kim, Sunday, 31 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, they couldn't very well say "From the man who brought you Hoffa..."

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 31 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'Smoochy' along with 'One Hour Photo', is supposed to represent the return of the 'good', non-dewy-eyed, non-sentimental lip-tembling Robin Williams ala 'Fisher King'. Maybe he's finally stopped his wife from choosing his projects for him.
Can't be as good as 'Popeye' though. That was genius.

DavidM, Sunday, 31 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I stay far away from anything associated with Robin Williams.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Sunday, 31 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The whole thing strikes me as an unfunny version of _Shakes The Clown_. I'm waiting for someone else to see it first.

Chris Barrus, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

surely the unfunny version of shakes the clown would be shakes the clown itself?

ethan, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bravo, ethan.

Alex in SF, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anything showing clowns as evil, twisted little fuckers surely is a good thing. Likely exception: The Day the Clown Cried

Ned Raggett, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"showing clowns as evil, twisted little fuckers" = Slipknot!

DavidM, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I dunno, they seem cuddly to me.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hmm... What to do? I may run in and out of the theatre shaking and buzzing.

N., Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Perhaps the funniest movie i have ever seen, and i dont even remeber most of the gags but i left the theater with my sides aching .

anthony, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

three years pass...
Robin Williams was Hillarious. You WIll never look at Barney the same way again!

Dave Mccormick, Sunday, 30 October 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

I've no idea in what way I looked at him before.

Matt (Matt), Sunday, 30 October 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...

SMOOCHY = YES

perhaps maybe slightly overlong and the plot loses some of its punch along the way... and then there's the whole R. Williams thing to contend with, but he was actually pretty entertaining in this. "I'M GOING ON SAFARI, MOTHERFUCKER!! SSSAAAAAFFFFAAARRRRIII!!!" *approximates elephant trumpet*

even so, completely under-rated almost classic. Also Catherine Keener was pretty yummy.

will, Sunday, 17 June 2007 21:17 (eighteen years ago)

i fell asleepw hen I saw this in the theatre

akm, Sunday, 17 June 2007 22:18 (eighteen years ago)

it was okay, not as bad as i thought it would be.

Dy, Monday, 18 June 2007 00:23 (eighteen years ago)

I really enjoyed this movie. I think I even paid a retailer good money for a copy of it.

Kate, non masonic, Monday, 18 June 2007 04:56 (eighteen years ago)

like 1 in 10 of my friends and acquaintances seem to have a long and well-refined monologue on how good this movie is just rattling around their heads waiting for any chance to get out

A B C, Monday, 18 June 2007 05:02 (eighteen years ago)

i've never seen it

A B C, Monday, 18 June 2007 05:03 (eighteen years ago)

I liked this movie when I watched it on the treadmill at the gym a few years ago. Loved Edward Norton.

Eazy, Monday, 18 June 2007 05:12 (eighteen years ago)

"What are you, blind? It's a cock! It's not a rocket, you sick fuck! It's a cock! Look. It's a cock and balls! A dick! Chorizo and the huevos! It's a big stiffy! It's a penis! Penis maximus! A willie! A weenie! Mr. Jiggle Daddy! The one-eyed wonder weasel! Don't you see that? It's Jimmy and the twins. Rumple Foreskin. He made this. It's made from dil-dough."

shouldn't that poster say 'first comeS love... then comeS reverend frank.'? it's kind of bothering me.

tehresa, Monday, 18 June 2007 12:19 (eighteen years ago)

From IMDB. "Tagline: First came love... then came Reverend Frank."

I watched Smoochy on TV sometime last year. For a movie that looks so utterly horrible, it was quite OK.

Øystein, Monday, 18 June 2007 12:21 (eighteen years ago)

What is that pic trying to prove? That Robin Williams is the vagina?

Tuomas, Monday, 18 June 2007 12:27 (eighteen years ago)

What it it with that typeface in red and romcoms?

Ed, Monday, 18 June 2007 12:28 (eighteen years ago)

That's the typeface of LOVE, silly.

Tuomas, Monday, 18 June 2007 12:29 (eighteen years ago)

I wish Norton had released an album of his character's songs.

Frogman Henry, Monday, 18 June 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

kenan, Monday, 18 June 2007 14:37 (eighteen years ago)

kenan that's not RED! also it does not have sharp, thin drop-shadow, which is urgent and key to the romcomness of it all

David R., Monday, 18 June 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

two years pass...

Seriously, how is a movie this great also this much of a pariah? What is wrong with the world?

all art is propaganda (kenan), Sunday, 21 June 2009 08:15 (sixteen years ago)

#1 in kottke's list of 50 Films You Can Wait to See After You're Dead. I don't get it either, only seen it once but thought it was great. Best of the 2002 Robin Williams Career Reclamation Trilogy (Smoochy > Insomnia > One Hour Photo).

man saves ducklings from (ledge), Sunday, 21 June 2009 09:02 (sixteen years ago)

Seriously, whenever I mention how great this movie is, people look at me like I'm high.

kate78, Sunday, 21 June 2009 17:52 (sixteen years ago)

For real, I'd understand if it was regarded as middling, and then when I say I love it people would be like, "Well, ok. Maybe I can see that." I have movies like that, too. But almost no one has even seen this movie, and it's regarded as poison or something. Like it will curve your spine and make you talk in a southern accent or something. Christ, people... it's not THAT bad. Actually it's really good!

I can't figure out what nerve it touched with critics that caused the landslide of hate.

I blame Ebert, I think. Half a star from the big man is pretty damning.

all art is propaganda (kenan), Sunday, 21 June 2009 18:00 (sixteen years ago)

Bring me the head of Ebert!

kate78, Sunday, 21 June 2009 18:00 (sixteen years ago)

Eew, you don't want that. Some of it doesn't even work anymore.

all art is propaganda (kenan), Sunday, 21 June 2009 18:02 (sixteen years ago)

(I wish I could take that post back. So mean.)

all art is propaganda (kenan), Sunday, 21 June 2009 18:02 (sixteen years ago)

mainstream crix like their comedies with a coating of faux social relevance (As Good As It Gets, Jerry Maguire, even Apatow)

Dr Morbius, Sunday, 21 June 2009 18:03 (sixteen years ago)

What's not funny about mean-spiritedness all by itself? The same critics will cut a break to a lot of movies that have the same rough tone -- Ebert loved Bad Santa, for instance, and so do I. Why this movie in particular?

all art is propaganda (kenan), Sunday, 21 June 2009 18:11 (sixteen years ago)

Probably because the cast of Bad Santa had something resembling charisma and no one in this movie did.

da croupier, Sunday, 21 June 2009 18:32 (sixteen years ago)

also Danny DeVito makes the butt-ugliest movies ever, which actually means i'll check them out for at least 15 minutes to peep the garishness.

da croupier, Sunday, 21 June 2009 18:34 (sixteen years ago)

i remember just hating this beyond belief when I saw it in a theater but maybe it's better now, years later, on dvd

akm, Sunday, 21 June 2009 18:34 (sixteen years ago)

I can't imagine why it would be

da croupier, Sunday, 21 June 2009 18:37 (sixteen years ago)

the cast of Bad Santa had something resembling charisma and no one in this movie did

You're just wrong. Catherine Keener does extreme, huffy exacerbation like no one. And Norton was so great toe-ing the line between gleeful and completely retarded. (And just for comparison, the movie also has a character who is completely retarded. But not in that "yay tolerance" Farrelly Brothers way, which I frankly find even more disgusting)

all art is propaganda (kenan), Sunday, 21 June 2009 18:38 (sixteen years ago)

actually I just about to xpost that I just remembered Catherine Keener was alright

da croupier, Sunday, 21 June 2009 18:39 (sixteen years ago)

b-b-b-but there's no one saying transgressive things like "fuck me santa" in death to smoochy

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 21 June 2009 21:17 (sixteen years ago)

the movies totally lewd & overblown weirdo comedy expressionism was just such a turnoff for me. so many wacky angles.

some dudes are bigger than others (s1ocki), Sunday, 21 June 2009 21:18 (sixteen years ago)

devito is consistently crazy with that shit, have you seen hoffa?

da croupier, Sunday, 21 June 2009 22:21 (sixteen years ago)

ya i was gonna say, he is a very stylistically weird dude

some dudes are bigger than others (s1ocki), Sunday, 21 June 2009 22:35 (sixteen years ago)

War of the Roses.

all art is propaganda (kenan), Sunday, 21 June 2009 22:39 (sixteen years ago)

yes?

da croupier, Sunday, 21 June 2009 22:43 (sixteen years ago)

the movie

some dudes are bigger than others (s1ocki), Sunday, 21 June 2009 22:51 (sixteen years ago)

weird movie, standard example of how a dark ending (the only way it could be darker is if they twitched and rattled) can make money. I remember my parents seeing it and going on and on about how they hated it. There really is no moral to the story.

all art is propaganda (kenan), Sunday, 21 June 2009 22:57 (sixteen years ago)

Must have been just one of my parents -- they'd been divorced for a few years by then. Maybe it was mom and her date? Ugh.

all art is propaganda (kenan), Sunday, 21 June 2009 23:00 (sixteen years ago)

Nowadays, I think it's brilliant.

all art is propaganda (kenan), Sunday, 21 June 2009 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

How do you hold onto someone who won't stay? And how do you get rid of someone who won't go?

all art is propaganda (kenan), Sunday, 21 June 2009 23:04 (sixteen years ago)

i was wondering the same thing

some dudes are bigger than others (s1ocki), Sunday, 21 June 2009 23:06 (sixteen years ago)

I'm going, I'm going. Jeez. Sometimes I need it in print, is all.

all art is propaganda (kenan), Sunday, 21 June 2009 23:07 (sixteen years ago)

But one more thing...

No I'm joking.

all art is propaganda (kenan), Sunday, 21 June 2009 23:10 (sixteen years ago)

war of the roses is 100% classic imo

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 21 June 2009 23:13 (sixteen years ago)

war of the roses is really funny. this was not.
