WAAAAY better than "Eden Lake" (in the weirdly hysterical class-ist British horror flick faceoff of '08). "The Children" ruled, though! "Mum & Dad" had a few moments...

Eden Lake > Donkey Punch

"Eden Lake" contains the most bewildering character behavior of any horror movie I can think of (i.e. think of the cliche of the character running from the killer and going back inside the house, and then UPSTAIRS! instead of just running!, then multiply that tenfold, and in strange new ways). The use of child murder as a device to complicate the emotional stakes was cheap and poorly done. But more than anything else, the class shit was indefensible. There's no way to spin that movie as anything but reactionary bullshit.
"Donkey Punch" was awful, but I seem to remember a couple of decent jolts, that preposterously long and gratuitous sex scene, and a remix of The Knife's "Heartbeats" that I didn't know on the soundtrack.
As far as belabored "us against them"/"the great unknowable" horror metaphors go, I'll take a movie where the bad guys are scheming entitled rich kids over scary dirty poor kids.

I mean this genuinely - was there more to Eden Lake that I didn't get?
― Savannah Smiles, Sunday, 4 January 2009 21:29 (seventeen years ago)
this was really not bad imo...the 1st like half hour is essentially a well-made music video showcasing 2007 (lol young folks and we are your friends w/in like a 10 min span)..then as long as you can suspend your disbelief in the central premise, it is pretty entertaining & crafted well "looks expensive" or w/e...basically if i was a hollywood bigwig id hire this director for some legit project.
liked how all the murders are played as misunderstandings or impulses.
plus ray winstone's daughter!?! at least shes not the one who gets murdered by dp amirite
― johnny crunch, Friday, 30 April 2010 14:19 (sixteen years ago)
