You're an attractive man who could stand to lose a few pounds.

(as could I)

Exercise and eating well would probably result in weight lose. No need to diet. If you like adult beverages, maybe switch to red wine instead of beer.

OH. MY. GOD.

Ahh, my eyes.

That poor guy, that's horrible.

If you're thinking about losing weight, a handy thing to do is to use a BMI calculator (there are lots online). Just put in your height and weight and it will tell you (more or less) where you want to be, weight-wise, in order to be in a healthy range. At 5'8", ideally I should be around 150-160; I weighed 180 a month ago, which for my height is overweight, so I joined a gym and started dieting and exercising and now I'm at 165. I'm still going. It helps to use the BMI to set a goal.

Drew Daniel, Monday, 29 September 2008 12:37 (seventeen years ago)

BMI's kinda bullshit tho, especially if you're tall and/or muscular

it be me, me, me and timothy (bernard snowy), Monday, 29 September 2008 12:48 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, obviously there are a range of body types and one can be 180 pounds of solid muscle or 180 pounds of soft internet potato flab and your scale won't tell you which side of that spectrum you're on. But as a *rough* starting place for figuring out height/weight proportions, I have found BMI handy in getting started on dieting (presumably the topic of this thread). I don't think the poster above would have even asked the question if he was a pro athlete with some minuscule percentage of body fat.

Drew Daniel, Monday, 29 September 2008 12:57 (seventeen years ago)

Yes, you 'should' lose weight. So should I. We all should. But it can't be done.

the pinefox, Monday, 29 September 2008 13:17 (seventeen years ago)

Guess I've been hallucinating those lower numbers on my scale then. Never mind.

Drew Daniel, Monday, 29 September 2008 14:43 (seventeen years ago)

BMI may be useful for some body types, but you don't need to be a professional athlete to throw off the scale...it's useless for me just because of how I'm built.

Cap Lx: Yeah, I guess? So could I, as someone already said. I think you look cheery and normal, and I quite like that errant right eyebrow that seems to arch by itself, but beer will do us all in eventually. I say this as someone who prob drinks 5 nights out of the week, and is seeing the results.

gabbneb, Monday, 29 September 2008 15:53 (seventeen years ago)

There are easy things to do and much harder things to do if you want to lose weight; I bet this stuff will be obvious to you but just in case:

Easy: I used to drink gallons of coffee every day with plenty of sugar and half and half. Now I drink it black. Presto, less fat and sugar.

Easy: Stop eating candy, stop drinking soda, stop eating brownies, cookies, sugary carbs, etc. I gave all of these up and at first I missed them and now I really don't.

Easy: Always keep lots of water around and drink it. Hungry? Drink some water and eat a carrot.

Easy: You're in charge of portion size. That means that even if a bunch of food is piled on a plate in front of you, you can always eat half and then just plop your napkin on top and tell yourself "I'm done." The more you do this, the easier it gets.

Harder to negotiate while on a diet: Dinner parties. Eating at restaurants, particularly greasy spoon breakfast spots and upscale fancy joints.

Optional, but it has worked for me: If you're in an urban area, figure out what raw and/or vegan and/or vegetarian places are around. Steer yourself towards that direction (and yeah, obviously, not all vegan/veggie food is necessarily low fat, duh, but . . . you will tend to feel better the more of your diet is coming from this neck of the woods and it can help to reorient your food habits in a healthier direction).

Drew Daniel, Monday, 29 September 2008 16:10 (seventeen years ago)

Basically I've been drinking less or no alcohol for the past week (I'm on antibiotics) and have cut back from the big deli breakfast that makes me happy to a lighter pastry that is...okay. The belt I'm wearing today is one notch smaller than last time I wore it. All in all, it hasn't been much of a sacrifice so far.

I will not be going veg, though.

Vampire romances depend on me (Laurel), Monday, 29 September 2008 16:17 (seventeen years ago)

for me, the only thing that works is keeping up with regular exercise. if i do that then i want to justify the effort, so i make better food choices and sometimes even drink less.

if i stop exercising for a few weeks, then i feel kinda out of touch with my body and go back to eating huge portions of everything.

Jordan, Monday, 29 September 2008 16:37 (seventeen years ago)

I'm currently off booze (totally), fags (just about), meat (99%), wheat (80%) and dairy (tr: cheese; still have milk on my cereal) and have been for the last week - can't say it's done a whole lot to my figure but I sure as shit *feel* better.

Lorax, what a lot of people have said: you could probably lose a bit, but only if you really feel the need. You wear the perceived "extra" well, but yeah, lose the goatee, they make every bloke ever look fatter!

you're a cutie! I would aim to always look like pic #2, but lose the facial hair. I think most people who post on message boards could stand to lose a little weight, hehe. I know I certainly could.

Finefinemusic, Monday, 29 September 2008 17:28 (seventeen years ago)

you are cute, also the facial hair is fine, don't listen to the anti-beard brigade. lose weight if you want to, just by doing tiny cuts like what drew is talking about you can probably lose a couple pounds right off the bat if you truly do need to lose any.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 29 September 2008 18:20 (seventeen years ago)

start making tiny cuts like one toe a day and you'll lose about 10 lbs in a month

and what, Monday, 29 September 2008 18:21 (seventeen years ago)

you look fine, lose a little weight if you'd like but don't be anxious about it. really i just want to weigh in on the beard question - i like it in the first picture, you should add more facial hair rather than reducing it!

Maria, Monday, 29 September 2008 18:31 (seventeen years ago)

Just shave the goatee.

Yes, there is always the option that was dramatized in some Stephen King story I read once wherein this surgeon gets shipwrecked on a deserted island and resorts to sawing off his appendages as a food source.

Footnote: I read that story when I was maybe 12 years old and staying at this place along the Jersey shore that some relatives had rented out for the summer. Along with the Stephen King collection of short stories, there happened to be a copy of Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health living in the bookshelf. I tried to read it out of curiosity, but gave up shortly after not being able to figure out what the words "aberrant" and "engram" meant sans the benefit of a dictionary.

Anyhow, I'm thinking that much or most of the above advice concerning losing weight is sound...whereas Dianetics/Scientology-- probably not so much.

Addendum: maybe try full beard as opposed to goatee? Or just go crazy and get rid of it all. Change is good.

dell, Monday, 29 September 2008 18:33 (seventeen years ago)

If I don't shave for even a couple of days I look a lot fatter.

I've had people telling me I've lost weight, but really I think it's more down to the fact I have shorter hair than before. THe only thing I have done though is to stop myself being tempted to buy blocks of cheddar fromt he supermarket because for ages I used to help myself to that stuff the moment I was peckish - not good. Oh and exercise semi-regularly, but I've been doing that for a few years now.

the next grozart, Monday, 29 September 2008 18:44 (seventeen years ago)

Seconding the full beard. You're young, and you can either shave or you can not shave, but there is no room for the goatee/vandyke in your life right now.

Jacob, Monday, 29 September 2008 18:52 (seventeen years ago)

And on the subject of diet re: losing weight, I think that the reason why a lot of vegetarian and vegan diets are perceived as somehow healthier is that the requirements of the diet tend to promote home cooking from unprocessed ingredients. I've seen a number of vegetarian friends gain significant weight, having discovered that there is plenty of crappy, unhealthy vegetarian food out there, and sugary fatty food makes the lack of delicious animal fats that much easier to handle.

Anyway beyond the obvious advice for someone looking to lose weight (eat the same diet but exercise a bit more), there's always learning to cook yourself, from fresh ingredients. You may stay the same weight (and that's fine, since you really look fine) but you'll at least know how to impress people in the kitchen.

All I know is, I was digging in a closet this weekend, and found a box of clothes that I had written off because I was too chubby for them, and I tried them on again and they fit beautifully. It's a good feeling.

Just sayin'.

"It helps to use the BMI to set a goal."

I'm kinda in doubt BMI is good. Only when you are eating healthy then you can rely on it. I was about 75 kilos a few months ago and visited a dietician a few times. Dropped weight like mad the first month. so much so she said I was her best client and that I had done it a bit too fast as I was (and still am) breastfeeding. Nice to say AFTERWARDS. Should have told me BEFOREHAND that I shouldn't lose 10 kilos in a month or so. Whatevs. Anyway I'm now at 60 kilos. She advised me to keep my weight at 65 kgs but fuck that. It just doesn't feel right, not my body. Like I'm carrying some extra baggage. I still want to lose more weight, few kilos I think. But I think what's the most important thing: do you FEEL like your body isn't your body. I think that actually made me decide to lose weight.

Most important things I learned from dietician: eat loads of brown bread (and just a little meat/spread on it). This prevented me from snacking in the evening. Also I had healthy snacks in between meals. Now I don't anymore cause I forget (that's what two kids do to you: you actually forget to eat). I do have to say, and that's why I don't really believe in the BMI that much, that I eat a lot of sugar 'n' fat on some days and I don't gain weight. I mean, I'm at a perfect weight, but I think my "content" is a bit too much fat.

Whatevs. I think you look great actually. Keep in mind that most people have a certain weight: even with a diet you will go back to that eventually. (So research has shown.)
