Probably a dozen pre-rolled, plus connectors, crimping tool and about half a spool left of cat-5.

WmC, Saturday, 31 January 2009 18:32 (seventeen years ago)

some next level shit!

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 31 January 2009 18:33 (seventeen years ago)

crimping tool? I use my teeth!

snoball, Saturday, 31 January 2009 18:41 (seventeen years ago)

I hate wireless networks...it was worth the trouble to wire up my house. Ran it all in the crawlspace underneath, no need to tear up walls.

WmC, Saturday, 31 January 2009 18:47 (seventeen years ago)

Is "USB cable" a stand-in for any kind of computer cable? Because in that case things are really awful at my house. I mean, I have goddamned rubbermaid tubs of this shit.

muomus (libcrypt), Saturday, 31 January 2009 18:50 (seventeen years ago)

Shit, I was confusing USB and ethernet cables.

WmC, Saturday, 31 January 2009 19:00 (seventeen years ago)

1 cable, if we're only counting USB-to-ethernet cables.

muomus (libcrypt), Saturday, 31 January 2009 19:04 (seventeen years ago)

Prob at least 2 mini, 1 micro, 2 ipod, extension cable.

talk me down off the (ledge), Saturday, 31 January 2009 19:09 (seventeen years ago)

Also usb to 2 x 3.5mm jack for singstar microphones

talk me down off the (ledge), Saturday, 31 January 2009 19:11 (seventeen years ago)

oh, and a square-plug kind for my desktop cutting gadget.

talk me down off the (ledge), Saturday, 31 January 2009 19:13 (seventeen years ago)

Wait, so according to this poll, 3 is way too many for a human being to have? I own more than 2 USB hubs!

I was thinking the options would be more like

  • what's a USB cable?
  • one
  • a couple
  • half a dozen
  • are you kidding? I have a massive BOX full of USB cables, electrical cables, musical cables, patch cords, wire, there cannot *be* an electronic or electric based connection need that I cannot meet

The Boring Machine (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 31 January 2009 19:29 (seventeen years ago)

...and I'm thinking most if not all of ILX would fall into that last category!

(Though I did spend about 20 minutes chasing down a kettle cord during a session the other day - I bet Erol freaking Alkan doesn't have to find his own kettle cords, dammit.)

The Boring Machine (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 31 January 2009 19:30 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Monday, 2 February 2009 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

I always have one less than I actually need

akm, Monday, 2 February 2009 00:07 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah surely everyone who uses PCs has at least 2 or 3 USB cables - one for your mouse, one for your kbd (if not a laptop), one for digital camera transfer. In my case I also have USB cables for a printer, 2 MIDI controller keyboards, another 2 cameras, and my ipod.

Trayce, Monday, 2 February 2009 00:16 (seventeen years ago)

mouse, keyboard, camera, ipod, 2 for external hds, edirol, probably a bunch more i'm forgetting

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Monday, 2 February 2009 00:23 (seventeen years ago)

a rats-nest worth, however many that comes to

Dear Tacos, how are you? I am fine. The weather is nice. I miss yo (Oilyrags), Monday, 2 February 2009 00:25 (seventeen years ago)

is a "rats nest" more or fewer cables than a "snake orgy" (as one support client used to call it)?

snoball, Monday, 2 February 2009 09:05 (seventeen years ago)

What's an USB cable? Is it just any cable that connects to your computer? Because then I have 4: one for the mouse, one for the keyboard, one for the screen, and one for the modem.

Tuomas, Monday, 2 February 2009 09:14 (seventeen years ago)

talk me down off the (ledge), Monday, 2 February 2009 09:23 (seventeen years ago)

I read the Wikipedia article, but it isn't very clear on whether all computer cables are "USB cables", or whether it's merely some subset of computer cables.

Tuomas, Monday, 2 February 2009 09:26 (seventeen years ago)

USB is intended to replace many legacy varieties of serial and parallel ports. USB can connect computer peripherals such as mice, keyboards, PDAs, gamepads and joysticks, scanners, digital cameras, printers, personal media players, flash drives, and external hard drives. For many of those devices USB has become the standard connection method.

How do I know if my cables are USB or not?

Tuomas, Monday, 2 February 2009 09:27 (seventeen years ago)

Where is option for ( ) I'm sure it's more than two but I can never find one when I need one so maybe some kind of very specialised black hole has opened up and I don't actually have any?

Okay, once I get home I will check if my cables looks like those pictures.

Tuomas, Monday, 2 February 2009 09:44 (seventeen years ago)

i'm talking about the kind that are FLAT on one end and TEENY on the other

every product sold anywhere in the world is now apparently obliged to be packaged with one whether you need it or not

Tracer Hand, Monday, 2 February 2009 11:25 (seventeen years ago)

So a mouse cable isn't an USB cable, because it has a mouse on one end?

Tuomas, Monday, 2 February 2009 11:28 (seventeen years ago)

staring into the USBs of mystery

talk me down off the (ledge), Monday, 2 February 2009 11:40 (seventeen years ago)

c on usb's

(xxpost) maybe there should be another poll for how many unopened USB cables you own? (ie, they are unopened because you already have several of that type already)

snoball, Monday, 2 February 2009 11:43 (seventeen years ago)

If people have spare USB cables lying about, does anyone happen to have one for a Sony CyberShot DSC-S700, as I've no idea where ours is.

chord simple (j.o.n.a), Monday, 2 February 2009 11:57 (seventeen years ago)

one for camera, 3 for external hdds, one for modem (actually, 2 as they supplied a spare), 3 for various mp3 players over the years = 8 or 9 (with 3 different end connectors). two more at work. and one extension cable. not counting usb things that plug in, like mice(1) and usb sticks(2).

koogs, Monday, 2 February 2009 12:02 (seventeen years ago)

I have one for the iPod (to a dock), a USB extension cable terminating on the desk so I don't have to pivot the imac around to plug things into it, and two normal-to-small ones, that are in a drawer and never get used because I bought a card-reader to plug into the extension cable. I have fuckloads of all denominations at work.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 2 February 2009 12:05 (seventeen years ago)

the ones that really cheese me off are the camera cables that are exactly like the 100000 other ones you have except that the teeny end doesn't have the flange on it, it's just a smooth flat D/U shape - FOR WHAT?? just so that you grab the wrong one every time?? HAHA GOOD ONE, HILARIOUS

Tracer Hand, Monday, 2 February 2009 12:36 (seventeen years ago)

I think at least 10...let's see

Mp3 players = 3, scanners = 2, cameras = 2, printer = 2, mouse = 1, misc = X

jel --, Monday, 2 February 2009 12:38 (seventeen years ago)

(xpost) Otherwise known as the "A to mini-B" type, or the "FFS manufacturers, leave enough space around the cocking socket" type...

snoball, Monday, 2 February 2009 12:39 (seventeen years ago)

camera, phone, mp3 players (2), external drives (2), printer, misc (4) of various lengths, usb sticks (2).

Disco/Very (Roz), Monday, 2 February 2009 13:07 (seventeen years ago)

yes, proprietary usb connectors must die. 5 pins should be enough for anyone.

koogs, Monday, 2 February 2009 13:27 (seventeen years ago)

k3vin k., Tuesday, 3 February 2009 00:03 (seventeen years ago)

My bf's dad made a jury-rig USB cable with a flat board pinout that would fit into the charger on a Nintendo DS, so I could charge it over USB. Totally worked, why Nintendo dont make one I dont know.

Trayce, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 00:04 (seventeen years ago)

A friend of mine fucked his PC a couple months ago when he forced in a USB cable backward. It caused a short and then the machine would just crash randomly (and frequently). The rectangular form factor is a bad idea, but even 6-pin firewire is no better, since it's possible to perform a very similar short when you almost plug it in backward.

muomus (libcrypt), Tuesday, 3 February 2009 00:21 (seventeen years ago)

This is why it is

a - important to be awake and alert when doing computer stuff

b - important to not just jam it in harder if it doesn't connect easily

Dear Tacos, how are you? I am fine. The weather is nice. I miss yo (Oilyrags), Tuesday, 3 February 2009 00:23 (seventeen years ago)

In all fairness to my friend, I have had USB plugging opportunities where the plug did not go in w/o hard jamming even when correctly oriented.

muomus (libcrypt), Tuesday, 3 February 2009 00:29 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah same, when the port and/or plug is stupidly designed with too much plastic shit around it for eg, I've almost stuffed up a few times. I always make sure the forked logo is topwise now.

Trayce, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 01:19 (seventeen years ago)

Unfortunately, many computer manufacturers mount USB ports sideways, so that wisdom may fail.

muomus (libcrypt), Tuesday, 3 February 2009 20:48 (seventeen years ago)

Ech, good point.

one art, please (Trayce), Tuesday, 3 February 2009 22:25 (seventeen years ago)

eleven years pass...

I was cleaning the house and found a million USB-A to USB-B cables. Where did these come from? Did I keep throwing out printers and hoarding the device cables? I'll never remember.

Nhex, Sunday, 3 January 2021 05:48 (five years ago)

One for every external harddrive I bought plus one for every time I bought a spare for phone charger and already had one.
So I think I have a few that are still working lying around.

Stevolende, Sunday, 3 January 2021 07:13 (five years ago)

Smoking, whiskey, USB cables - you ilxors are a bunch of degenerates

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Sunday, 3 January 2021 07:22 (five years ago)

A lot of new devices that use a USB 2.0 A-B cable don't come with a cable any more (HP I'm looking at you and your printers in particular).

Being cheap is expensive (snoball), Sunday, 3 January 2021 08:58 (five years ago)

Had to order a Lightning to USB-B cable for a guitar pedal today. I think the only variety I don’t own is USB-B to B.

Joe Biden Stan Account (milo z), Sunday, 3 January 2021 09:41 (five years ago)

One less than I used to have - the long one, the most useful one - broke at the micro end. Next longest one is about a foot shorter.

Seems ridiculous having to buy another given I have 3000 of the things.
