I saw Jerry Lewis in that Robert DeNiro movie, and he really seemed to be smoldering with audience-hate.Besides him, I can think of David Letterman, but who else gives the impression that they think their own audience is stupid?

I don't mean like as a confrontational persona or schtick, I mean someone filled with genuine contempt.(I guess if the dude behind neil hamburger did it because he hates comedy audiences, that would count.)

I read this as "Canadians Who Have Nothing but Contempt for their Audience." Don't I wish. It would never be permitted by the CRTC, CanWest Global, and Rogers.

I found that being onstage as a comedian often spawned simultaneous self- and audience-loathing. "I shouldn't be up here, and shame on you for listening." A musician told me he hed the same feeling sometimes.

I saw Eno said that too, in Word recently.

I felt that way at times too in my past musician's career. Some schmoe would come up to me after a show and tell me how great we were (it happened once or twice over a five-year period!), and I would sooo question his taste and frankly, his mental health.
This is veering a bit off-topic, but yeah, fat-kid-in-Slow-Century-DVD to thread.

You realize this was part of his character in the movie?
― Tuomas, Monday, 23 February 2009 21:23 (seventeen years ago)
ya but let's be honest that's probably a big part of why he was cast
― s1ocki, Monday, 23 February 2009 21:26 (seventeen years ago)
discovered andy kaufman recently, who has a really low profile in the UK, and he seems to derive a pretty solipsistic pleasure in making the audience into the joke. I'm pretty keen on that. been on/off reading the tosches dean martin biography and jerry lewis is painted as pretty miserable and bitter in that.
― ogmor, Monday, 23 February 2009 21:34 (seventeen years ago)
they orig wanted Johnny Carson, but yes, Lewis works better, and he clearly wrote some of his lines about showbiz leeches. "SO DID HITLER!"
They used Lewis' NY apartment, his dog, etc.
xp

The scene where they're walking down the sidewalk and all the construction guys go "Hey, Jerry!" wasn't staged.

Andy Kaufman played a lot of audience-hating characters (Tony Clifton, redneck-baiting rassler Andy) but it seemed like he had a genuine fondness for his audience even as he is mercilessly screwing with them. Maybe Michael Richards...?
Bill Murray?? Tina Fey?? Whuh??
