classic or dud, yo? people who watch the wire and then start speaking like the characters from it

i've noticed this a lot lately on the forums that i lurk on. someone watches the wire (usually latecomers) and then they start speaking in baltimore street slang.

anyway, it's really annoying and imo should stop immediately.

you feel me?

Yeah, there is a way to say "Oh, indeed" that is very Omar-esque.

I have caught myself saying 5-0, but that was from hawai 5-0 and from PE saying "5-0 said freeze . . ." so it didn't start with the Wire, it was just re-popularized by it.

But hell I live in Baltimore so maybe I deserve some slack on this.

what's the 'balmer' accent that McNulty does -- is that exaggerated baltimore or is there a county named 'balmer' where people talk like that?

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 22 April 2009 19:50 (seventeen years ago)

McNulty's accent is inconsistent. From the DVD commentary, he says he was going for a generic Northeast accent.

You can actually hear a number of different variants of the "bawlmer" accent on the show.

The ones that actually sound real to me are Valcheck, Bunny's Lt., Rawls (surprisingly), and Horse.

To be sure, there are others that come in and out - Ziggy's comes on blazing with certain words, and then its gone. Frank Sobotka, the same.

Then you have supposedly born and raised Baltimorians like Herc and Carcetti who sound more like Brooklyn.

For those of us raised around it, we can slip back into it pretty easily. I had a conversation with a woman from Wilmington, DE the other day and she sounded like she remembered seeing Mayor Schaefer swim in the Inner Harbor.

McNulty's worst attempt at the Baltimore accent occurs in the scene where he's awkwardly conversing with Daniels after he finds out him and Rhonda Pearlman are getting it on. He's all like "You ever been to the OWHcean"

Carcetti's accent is at least consistent. Idris wins hands down in the UK dude playing American between him, Carcetti, and McNulty.

Totally- that character nails the Baltimore accent. in terms of actors faking it, I was honestly pretty surprised at how well, er, John Travolta did it in that recent Hairspray re-do. I find it a very hard accent to imitate. There's certain vowel sounds that just come out of no-where. Like when a locally born and raised person says "Timonium" that make that "Tim-mowww-nee-yum" sound.

Neotropical pygmy squirrel, Wednesday, 22 April 2009 21:39 (seventeen years ago)

Some of these vowel sounds are similar to some Southern accents.

Then you have supposedly born and raised Baltimorians like Herc and Carcetti who sound more like Brooklyn.

actually, Herc's character was born in the Bronx (which explains his accent). as for Carcetti, i presume that they were going for some sort of generic urban Italian-American thing (the same way Rocky and family sounded more like they were from South Brooklyn than South Philly) (and also factoring out the fact that Carcetti IRL is Irish and may have had a hard time w/ a Baltimore accent).

also, to my ears the Baltimore accent sounds a lot like a Southerner trying to imitate a Philly accent.
