i know that only the first 3 seasons have been released officially on dvd, there's no sign of the others on amazon or any torrent sites.

this offer seems too good to be true, 37 dvds for $120 - has anyone on here used either of these sites before, or know if they're a scam? i REALLY want to get these as a birthday present for my girlfriend but is it worth risking the £100 or so? i'm based in the UK so if this is a fake am i less likely to get reimbursed? if it's all real how on earth have they got all the eps of Alfred Hitchcock Presents?

I swear there's another thread on here that gets into these sites. I'm pretty sure they use a legal loophole to import very grey market international copies of shows. Someone on the thread (maybe it was on AV Maniacs, actually...) ordered the entire Sopranos for like £25, and said it was in packaging with Russian text, but that everything worked fine. I'm guessing this is something along those lines.

NI, one is tvdvdboxset.com and the other is tvdvdboxsetS.com , watch out

StanM, Wednesday, 22 April 2009 13:47 (seventeen years ago)

That said, I've ordered from shoddier sites and got what I wanted (korean version of lars von trier's the kingdom, worked perfectly and was able to select english and everything, arrived just days before a never suspected localised box set in my region was announced)

StanM, Wednesday, 22 April 2009 13:53 (seventeen years ago)

I think the other time this came up was on one of the Sopranos threads. There was a site called bargindvd.com (I think) selling the complete series for $90-100. I got one without any hassles (though the packaging is crap) and at least one other ilxor did too -- Shakey Mo maybe?

'm pretty sure they use a legal loophole to import very grey market international copies of shows.

Yeah, there is some Asian text text on the Sopranos discs.

(I meant, there are English subtitles on that kingdom thing, it's in danish of course)

StanM, Wednesday, 22 April 2009 14:15 (seventeen years ago)

Ok, I bit the bullet. I'll update this thread in a week or two when I get, or don't get, the DVDs. If it's real then wow, 11 seasons of one of the best TV shows I've ever seen. Though I've only seen the first 3 seasons, I hope the quality doesn't drop off after those.

NI, Wednesday, 22 April 2009 14:32 (seventeen years ago)

(11 extra seasons I mean)

"People who have bought from them say that they are copied right off the TV and are terrible quality. Some of the discs don't even work, and when you try to call/e-mail the company, they don't get back to you. They have been busted in the past for this, and their websites were shut down, but now they're back up and running again. Their websites look very professional, their products look great in the pictures, and they claim that the DVD's are of fantastic quality, but it's all a scam. All they want is for you to fork over your credit card, and once they ship the items, you may never hear from them again. One buyer that I heard from explained that her credit card was charged huge amounts--more than she purchased--and although the credit card company eventually gave it back to her, it was a tremendous hassle."

We've talked about this on other boards, they are not reputable, most likely copies of the wagon set. Only Lionsgate has the license to release LHOTP, these are counterfeit, don't believe marketing hype, they aren't fans, they wouldn't know a cut episode or what chronological order is. Caveat emptor

i don't mind too much if they are recorded off tv, i've watched worse. just so long as i receive the dvds and don't just get stung for $140

If Hammer says so, it must be legit.

one month passes...

Hi,

This is Maggie. I am owner of tvdvdboxset.com. We are just a small family affiliate business. Please don't compare us with tvdvdboxsetS.com. If anyone checks our website (tvdvdboxset.com) for themselves (e.g. just perform a fake order), they will see that we are just an advertiser/associate for Amazon. We don't ship product from China and never have.

We believe the confusion is caused because tvdvdboxsetS.com for whatever reason they mention our name (tvdvdboxset) in their copyright notice. Since they provide no contact information or phone number and we do, we end up fielding all their order inquiries and complaints. We are quite sick of the situation as we are not setup to handle that amount of calls, nor should we have to.

We just ask that people do their own research and check the facts before judging any given site.

Regards

Maggie

I totally take back the word "shoddy" from upthread since you now posted here and I'm a wimp.

StanM, Thursday, 28 May 2009 04:23 (seventeen years ago)

ok update! the dvds DID arrive... but they're next to useless. cpl of tatty plastic boxes, with about 40 dvds in. the episodes aren't in any order and there's no more than 5 episodes on each dvd, sometimes less, so there's nowhere near the 400-ish epsiodes they advertise on the site. the quality is diabolical, like its been taken from super 8 film thats been rotting in the bottom of a skip for 40 years. some episodes are unplayable, skipping jerking, doing that weirdy blocky colour thing all the way through. in short, the whole thing was massive rip-off, do not use.

from skipping through some dvds at random there are a mix of episodes from season 4 and 6 in there, which is unusual as i can't find many episodes post-season 3 on the torrent sites. i guess if i were desperate i'd scour through and work out which ones i hadn't seen and squint to watch them .. but nah. i'll just wait til the next season gets released and watch that. they've released seasons 1, 2 and 3 verrrry slowly over the past few years so i guess it'll carry on this way.

There's a ton of Alfred Hitchcock Presents episodes on Hulu, is it possible they copied them off there somehow?

mh, Thursday, 28 May 2009 14:22 (seventeen years ago)

Wait - did they actually go back in and just paint some black over the "s"?!?!

NI - that sucks, man - is there any possible way to get your money back? Or legal recourse that could be taken against these pricks?

Shannon Whirry & the Bad Brains, Thursday, 28 May 2009 14:36 (seventeen years ago)

ah im just gona leave it - lesson learned: if something looks suss it probably is. lesson 2: if something has people on random forums saying how shitty it is then don't ever ever get it, no matter how much you love hitchcock.

coda: i ended up getting my g/f a DSi for her birthday instead

NI, Friday, 29 May 2009 10:46 (seventeen years ago)

Cheap, from China? :-)

StanM, Friday, 29 May 2009 10:52 (seventeen years ago)

Actually related to the DS and legitimacy, I've noticed a fuckton of cheap as chips DS games on Ebay (UK) lately from Hong Kong and China. Has anyone had any experience purchasing these? How legit are they (i.e. do they work properly)?

I only ask because a couple of years back I picked up a whole bunch of Gameboy Advance catridges in a Hong Kong market to play on the plane back; they worked fine EXCEPT they didn't save data or they wiped the save data after a preset time. I'm wondering if this will be the same deal or not.

ears are wounds, Friday, 29 May 2009 11:08 (seventeen years ago)

xpost ha no, it was bought on impulse the day before her birthday from selfridges when i twigged the hitchcock dvds weren't gonna arrive in time if at all.

not sure about the DS games on ebay thing, surely dodgy things like that are zapped by the powers that be? if you're after a few games to try-before-buy, you could always buy one of those acekard 2i cards & an 8gb microsd card and d/l some torrents. [this thread has now become NOT-legit]

NI, Friday, 29 May 2009 14:05 (seventeen years ago)

If you're looking for bootleg-ish DVD sets, try ioffer.com, which I have used in the past. At least one person with positive feedback is selling the entire Alfred Hitchcock Hour on blank DVDs for $18.
