Movies about brilliant homeless musicians suffering from mental illness and starring Morton Downey Jr and Jamie Foxx aren't supposed to open in April!

Also, NPR, will you please shut up about this show? PLEASE?

Before coffee. You know what I meant.

It was originally supposed to be released last Thanksgiving, in time for Oscar contention. They might've delayed it because Downey was getting the supporting actor nomination for Tropic Thunder, or they just didn't think the finished product would be in the running.

or maybe it's a POS

beast of the admin log (some dude), Friday, 24 April 2009 13:55 (seventeen years ago)

That is how it smells to me.

Shoegaze Knight (Oilyrags), Friday, 24 April 2009 14:03 (seventeen years ago)

The reviews I've read so far point to the POS. It looks like Foxx violated Downey's own rule from Tropic Thunder, "never go full retard".

The original preview that ran when it was still supposed to open in time to qualify for this year's Oscars was some sort of work of art. It was maybe the most fake-looking trailer I'd seen since the one for Caramel.

Looks like pure schmaltz to me.

"never go full retard" is a surprisingly still funny line

Variety really ripped this one up.

It was maybe the most fake-looking trailer I'd seen since the one for Caramel.

argh i have been listening to npr more than usual this week and they say something about it on morning edition or all things considered EVERY day. it doesn't sound like even it'll be good at all! i mean not that npr usually has the best taste in movies but whyyyyyy

barfy (harbl), Friday, 24 April 2009 20:48 (seventeen years ago)

Because the distributor are paying sponsors of NPR? Same reason they mention any other book/television show/product

there's nothing more glorious than the full epic fail of an schmaltzy, condescending film that aspires to a dozen oscars

i was feeling curmudgeonly so i wrote them to complain about it

Omar on the stash. If direct to video had as much pretentious trash as it did violent sexist trash, then...

Well, I don't know what then. But still.

Full Metal Slanket (Oilyrags), Friday, 24 April 2009 21:27 (seventeen years ago)

I haven't seen such an obvious total dog of a dull, pretentious movie's ad campaign since "The Pursuit of Happyness"

Full Metal Slanket (Oilyrags), Friday, 24 April 2009 21:35 (seventeen years ago)

No, wait. Forgot "The Bucket List"

Full Metal Slanket (Oilyrags), Friday, 24 April 2009 21:36 (seventeen years ago)

It's like a trilogy of Magical Negro horseshit.

I really quite enjoyed this film. "Full retard" is very different then schizo but I have worked with mental hospital patients before and probably understand Jamie's character better than some people. I wanted to tell Robert how to handle Jamie's character during the movie but I suppose he didn't get to see all of Nathaniel's problems the way the audience did.

I love the passion that Nathaniel has.

Also, the ending of this movie was more European style than American. But since it's based on a true story I suppose that will happen. (Americans like happy endings.. ug I cant believe I just typed that)
