― "buttz" (Z S), Sunday, 26 April 2009 16:56 (seventeen years ago)
Actually it's more the texture of eel that's disgusting. And the memory of that part in Tin Drum.
I think it's the fact that it's eel that makes it seem disgusting to you. The texture is pretty similar to a lot of fish.

That plate of eel looks really delicious! Only I'm relatively sure I'd dislike it, basically this thread's direct opposite. But I can hardly stomach most sorts of water-born anything save for tuna and that cod or whatever that is standard with fish and chips. Can barely eat salmon, even :(

How does eel taste in contrast to octopus or squid? I had octopus once and thought it tasted somewhere between dog food and an old rubber band.

Century eggs when properly pickled are divine but when pickled poorly can strip your mouth with their bitter alkaline-ness. Be wary of cheap supermarket versions which often use lead oxide as a pickling agent. I think they look really pretty - especially the "pine blossom" version which is imbued with snowflake-like patterns.

Eel tastes a bit like mackerel, only richer. Not at all what you'd expect. Sounds more tempting in Japanese - unagi.

Most seafood falls under this category. If you'd never seen a big whiskery prawn, a clam or a squid before you wouldn't immediately think of putting it in your mouth. Except maybe for a bet.

I admire whoever was the first person in history to catch a monkfish and think, mmm, chop off the head, a little garlic, a little lemon, instead of screaming and throwing it back.
― Dorian (Dorianlynskey), Monday, 27 April 2009 14:31 (seventeen years ago)
My favorite thing at the Pike Place Fish Market was the monkfish in the display case whose mouth they had rigged up with fishing line. If somebody walked near it and was sort of oblivious, they would jerk the line and it would look like this monster was suddenly snapping at them.

geoduck clamhttp://www.cortesisland.com/tideline/articles/articles_1422/Photo_Geoduck_&_Diver.jpg
So a while back I saw this being used on Top Chef or something and looked it up on Wikipedia to learn more about it, and the first line had been changed to something like:
"The geoduck (pronounced "gooey duck"), or Donkey Dong of the Sea, is a species of very large saltwater clam, a marine bivalve mollusk in the family Hiatellidae."
Which for a second seemed almost plausible
