Why do we never do FAPs any more like we used to?

Just sayin... I didn't go to an awful lot of them but enjoyed the ones I did attend, particularly punting in Cambridge and drinking in the Foundry in London. Is it just that ILX doesn't get on as well as it did?

Ever so often, I think the same thought.

They'd want individual board rooms, thesedays.

There'd only be complaints about the noise from the "I love TMI" room.

Can I ask a technical question? I've figured out by context what y'all mean when you say FAP, but where does that originate? Is it an acronym? Urban Dictionary, uh, wasn't much help.

Although now it's become onomatopoeic net slang for masturbation, which is not what we mean.

I don't think I'd know what to do at a FAP, I mean I've never met people I "know" from the internet before and I'm awkward enough as it is in normal circumstances.

I meant to say hi to Ned at Terrastock but instead we just o_O'd each other from a distance lol.

I like how when people start threads about FAPs without specifying a location in the title, it's always implied that it's London.

Chicago ILXors have FAPs all the time; we just call it "hanging out."

I keep thinking that some kind of nu-Scots FAP is in order ... some of the old Glasgow guard (RJG, Ally C) aren't really in evidence here any more, and Nick's fucked off back down south, but there are other, newer Scottish posters, and it's not like myself/Onimo/Ailsa are ever going to say no to beer.

And if Ward Fowler's out there, it'd be good to catch up, dude!

Anyway. Just throwing it out there, like ...

WHY SO SHY FOAX

meeting ppl is fun!

sorry for british (country matters), Wednesday, 29 April 2009 12:52 (seventeen years ago)

Well, ILX is a broad church, and -- although I personally agree with you -- for many people there's a massive gulf between conversing on screen and conversing F2F. And hellfire, I'm a talkative extrovert of the first order, but I found rocking up at the Drum & Monkey all those years ago and saying: "Hello, are you ILX? I'm Grimly Fiendish" was actually oddly nerve-wracking: the bringing together of virtual and real worlds really hit home.

Five seconds later I was getting pissed up with quality dudes, though, so hey: hurrah.

a tiny, faltering megaphone (grimly fiendish), Wednesday, 29 April 2009 12:58 (seventeen years ago)

Haha, agreed, but 1) I'm not that good at it to begin with (probably seems flimsy if you are in the position of being good at it, but anyway) which compounded by 2) small talk's gonna be weird cuz you already know all these details about people from the internet, but you're still getting to know each other face to face, so...like...well basically what I'm getting at is BEEERR

xpost and also what grimly said

Which is why at Terrastock I didn't know how to approach Ned (who was always talking to someone or another he knows), interrupt him/them, thrust out my hand and be all "Hi, I know you from the INTERNET?"

invitation to rabies (╓abies), Wednesday, 29 April 2009 13:03 (seventeen years ago)

i can imagine that happens to ned, of all people, all the time though.

Old Big 'OOS (AKA the Cupwinner) (darraghmac), Wednesday, 29 April 2009 13:04 (seventeen years ago)

Yeh, exactly ... and Ned is one of those guys you talk to for five seconds and feel like you've known since you were in short trousers -- I mean that as the highest possible compliment, btw! -- so ... ach well.

a tiny, faltering megaphone (grimly fiendish), Wednesday, 29 April 2009 13:06 (seventeen years ago)

Maybe I'm just mega-used to meeting people from the internet (insert yr own joeks here lol) but I find it becomes very natural and personable pretty much from the outset, especially if you greet forcefully enough. One thing I can't really square is how people I've met and gotten on well with IRL have such ridiculous vendettas against each other online.

The next London FAP ought to have more than 4 ppl imo

And yeah, I'm pretty sure Ned and I would get on well, once I stopped consciously trying to mimic his speech patterns ;-)

sorry for british (country matters), Wednesday, 29 April 2009 13:07 (seventeen years ago)

Everyone knows Ned from the internet. He is an internet personality. He was created from stale muffins an coffee dregs at Well coffee house FAP circa 1986.

Prince of Persia (Ed), Wednesday, 29 April 2009 13:08 (seventeen years ago)

as far as London goes most of the core group of fappers from 4-8 years ago aren't really here anymore, moved on etc. and it's probably more to with that lack of a irl friends nucleus than people generally getting on less (kind of a red herring imo).

also there never seem to be Americans visiting anymore ha.

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Wednesday, 29 April 2009 13:08 (seventeen years ago)

There's probably an argument in here somewhere about how the rise in social media and Facebook in particular has caused a decline in IRL social events actually organised on message boards but I've no idea if it's actually true.

t's probably more to with that lack of a irl friends nucleus than people generally getting on less (kind of a red herring imo)

It's also a matter of people getting to know each other IRL so well they don't need an internet message board to organise going out for a beer. I suppose this happens in any group where the friendships themselves become stronger than the initial context for those friendships.

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Wednesday, 29 April 2009 13:16 (seventeen years ago)

Well, I can't entirely comment, as I haven't seen many beefers in the same room together, but in terms of people who have maybe beefed un petit peu with me I've done pretty well. If for instance I told you a certain controversially-permabanned ILX bully/aggravator/bigdog was actually pleasant company IRL, would any of you believe me? Or if I told you that many of his antagonisers/antagonised were similarly interesting and relatable? IRL beef has occurred at FAPs but they've been isolated incidents.

Dammit Matt I knew that'd come back to haunt me. On the plus side, it's still lying around unread so I could yet take up your challenge...wait for April to expire tho' cause I've got writing projects with a May 1 deadline innit

Most people who are horrible on the internet tend to be fine in person, it's an ancient rule of the web or something. That said just because I like two people separately doesn't mean they're going to get on with one another.

Yeah, I remember seeing that. Brighton, was it?

I'll suggest the best Glasgow FAP was when we unintentionally took over the Alpen Lodge and then the jukebox played awesome records all night without us putting any money in. I'm fairly sure that was a different night also, grimly, because I'm faily sure myself and onimo drunkenly stumbled onto the last-ish train home the night of Alpen Lodge FAP. Think you might be thinking of one of the Christmas ones, which was also Alpen Lodge based (I'm assuming I wasn't there, because there's no way there was a FAP and I wasn't the last one to leave and miss out on extra drinking time I am far too good a friend to leave onimo drinking on his own, selfless soul that I am).

I am sorry I missed you last time you were here Ken, onimo and I were going to pop in for a quick pint on the way back from the football, but you'd removed yourself from easy access to the train back home.

Anyway, yeh: two short-arsed dudes with similar coats (though Ken's was much nicer) ... it was bound to cause confusion. Still, having Stet ring me half an hour after I'd left, saying: "What coat are you wearing?" a lot while I stood eating chips outside the Royal Bank of Scotland and slowly realising that none of the stuff in my jacket pocket was mine ... surreal times.

A good night, though. I think.
