I am frequently called "ma'm" on the phone because my hospitality voice is so damn ~velvety~.

I used to work for a radio station where half of my day was doing commercials and reports and the other half of my day was spent answering phones for a three-hour sports talk show.
The job I'm in now, I don't have to say so much, which I'm rather thankful for. Now I'm the guy who after hanging up after a conversation with a client, people in the office say, "Gee, you should be in radio!" Thanks! I'll think about it!

not so much now that i'm on the editing end, but when i was a reporter, yeah, obviously. i always wished for a deeper, more authoritative voice. mine's a little nasally, with flat great-lakes vowels. i felt like i lacked the proper timbre to bring lying bastards to heel. otoh, there can be advantages to sounding non-threatening.

(i mostly use my voice at work these days for doom-talk with co-workers about the collapse of print journalism.)

i do, though as an introvert i pace my social interaction deliberately to minimize stress, my amount of travel gives me relative freedom that way thank god. when i was on phone support duty i actually got to like being social with customers but i would have splitting headaches from talking and thinking so much lol

I used to work in IT phone support and it was a real struggle to keep the tetchy sound out of my voice.
― snoball, Sunday, 17 May 2009 10:46 (seventeen years ago)

Hah me too snoball, I'm terrible at fighting the crabby impatience with rude/clueless IT customers (which is why I just wont do helpdesk anymore).

Ha, yes. And when I'm not using it for that, I'm using it to swear indiscriminately at everyone at everything.
